Abstract

Riots incited by George Floyd's incident are proof that racism still exists in the US. Afro-Americans are still largely viewed as the descendants of slaves and following the completion of the “a fool and a crude person” stigma. This paper focuses on the tensions between Black and White Americans displayed by the news regarding George Floyd's incident and other racism-related incidents. The writer analyzes the tensions in the view of post-truth theory where the existence of racism is often denied by the Americans; the knowledge that racism exists, but they are not comfortable talking about it. A multimodality approach is used in the sense that both text and image in the news are analyzed. The writer identifies and locates relevant information, analyzes the evidence, and then develops and discusses the findings. From the analysis, the writer found that the news indeed presents the embodiment of racism in the U.S. contemporary society.

Abstract

A movie as development of literature technique which according to Marxism is part of superstructure derives from the social process. Karl Marx himself divides society into two different groups: a capitalist class and a proletarian class. A capitalist who owns a mode of production has control over a proletariat whose life depends on the sale of labor to capitalists. This often leads to class conflict. That phenomenon also reflected in Sorry to Bother You, an American movie produced in 2018 and directed by Boots Riley, as data source used in this study. The story revolves around the struggle of a character named Cassius Green who works in Regalview, a telemarketing company. After being promoted, he faces a big company named Worryfree as his client. Later on, he revealed the cruelty of Worryfree owner that triggering him and another worker to fight the company. Thus, the objective of this research is to find out how a capitalist is being depicted in Sorry to Bother You movie. The research analyzed using a qualitative method also using Marxism and cinematography theory. The result indicates that the movie portrays the capitalist not only as a rich man but also manipulative as he changes the worker into a people-horse creature to produce cheap and strong labor. Besides, he is backed by the government despite condemned for slave labor. The conclusion from such depictions proves that the capitalist will do anything to gain profit even though he must exploit the workers.

Abstract

Many young girls across the globe lookup to Disney’s princesses. However, the princess images created by Disney carry gender-role stereotypes. Most stories have a stereotypical plot: the girl meets the prince; the prince falls in love with the girl, and the two get married and live happily ever after. The female characters are always portrayed as ordinary women who wish that a rich and handsome man will come and make their lives better. However, the images of Disney princesses have changed in the past eight years. Since 2012, Disney princesses have had more progressive female characters, as seen in Brave, Frozen, and Moana animated features. The main characters are different from past Disney princesses. This paper will try to analyze gender roles in contemporary Disney princesses

Abstract

Women travel writing covers women’s experience of enjoying their independence, learning from the real experience, and exercising the social influence as well as the authority they have. However, women’s travel writings are often not considered worth analyzing as they are styled in a way that tends to be like fiction than a factual report of actual travels. This paper’s objective is to analyze Trinity’s travel writing, The Naked Traveler, in the light of post-truth. It is argued that Trinity’s travel writing is very touristic and is lacked contemplations but her writing is, in a way or another, typical of travel writings. On one hand, Trinity’s travel experiences indeed cannot represent Indonesian women’s experience of traveling since most Indonesian women are not privileged to having access to domestic and overseas travel. In her travel writing, Trinity simplifies the process of planning and executing her travel, thus overlooking the financial limitation and cultural restrictions often faced by Indonesian women to travel. On the other hand, Trinity’s lack of in-depth description and observation in her travel writing should not be regarded as her lack of credibility to present her actual travels. It should be seen as her way of stimulating Indonesian women’s desire to travel, the same aim targeted by many other travel writings.

Abstract

Travel writing has a long history dating back to early modern European colonial era in the 16th century. However, in the 21st century the role of travel writing is redefined and reconceptualized as the world becomes more globalized and connected. This paper attempts to investigate further the potential of travel writing to represent social, historical, and political issues. Using textual analysis, the research focuses on the discourses of power and identity as depicted in Kapka Kassabova’s Border: A Journey to The Edge of Europe (2017). The portrayal of border zones as liminal spaces is also discussed in this paper. The analysis shows that liminal spaces can be interpreted as the sites where power and identity are constantly challenged and negotiated. It reveals that liminal spaces are hardly neutral but contain ideological conflicts. It is expected that the result of the study will contribute a new perspective to the discussion of contemporary travel writing, especially in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract

From ancient times to the present, women have been subjected to a great deal of discrimination. Discrimination against women is predominant in the movie Enola Holmes. This statement attracts attention since women are frequently perceived as weak and devalued because women rely on males and are rarely free to do. Through the movie Enola Holmes, which is backed by feminist theory (Collins, 2000), this study intends to explore information about the varieties of feminism that occur in the movie. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method, which is commonly used to investigate social problems of phenomena. The data is taken from several pictures, dialogues, and monologues from the Enola Holmes movie and then analysis done contextually and theoretically. The researchers found that liberal feminism was the most prevalent, it shows oppressed women in any situation. In contrast, Radical Feminism is a minor one, social actions are related to a social system that place men as the primary power holders and dominates in various roles. Postmodern feminism and Critical Race Feminism data are not found in the movie, because those kinds of feminism did not appear in the 19th century.
