Abstract

Poetry should not only be dulce but also utile or being sweet and useful as what a Latin poet Horatius once said. The essence of usefulness is very indispensable in this recent post-truth era when the surging digital technology has contributed to the an escalating anthropocentric culture. Consumerism and other anthropogenic activities that pervade human daily life are the very epitome of this anthropocentrism. An obvious impact but also a polemical controversy of these practices is global warming as one ecological phenomenon. Ecopoetry as a sub-genre of environmental humanities or ecocriticism aims to unveil the truth that the biotic community consists of the interdependent relation between human and nonhuman animals and their physical environment. This ecological fact is an indisputable truth that differs from the one of social or political facts. Gary Snyder and Jack Spicer as two poets of the San Francisco Renaissance movement in the 1950s are two figures who show concern about human interconnection with material phenomena. In their succinct poems, they open one’s awareness that any material good is not an object but that each material thing co-exists with one’s consciousness in certain time and place. Their landscape poetics then is able to evoke one’s understanding of his/her interconnection with any life form in the natural world. This ecological awareness would impact on human savvy ways in consuming goods to fulfill daily necessities.

Abstract

Discourse provides insight on the function and nature of cognitive-emotional phenomena. Empathetic notions of a community can be traced from their discourses and how the community members use them, especially in the context of business and promotion. This paper explores how values are reflected in the English and Javanese empathetic business and promotional discourses especially the business and promotional idioms, expressions, taglines, and descriptions. 31 out of 50 online English empathetic business idioms and 21 out of more than 300 printed Javanese proverbs and sayings were analyzed using the perspectives of ESP with a thick description on the context of both cultures. Additionally, a reflective analytical lens was also included considering that the author is a Javanese herself who is using and practicing the Javanese language and culture on daily basis. Findings of the study suggest a strong ground of how cultural beliefs and values transmitted from the ancestors for-grounding the practice of business interactions with some innovations following changing of time and expectations.

Abstract

Jorinda & Jorindel is one of the horror tales rewritten by Brother Grimms. Jorinda & Jorindel as the protagonists in this story faced a catastrophe caused by supra-natural terror and kidnapping committed by The Evil Witch. In realizing such narration, language plays a significant role to depict the characters’ feelings or emotional state that gives the text mood. Such language is technically perceived as the affect. It is one of the attitude domains under the theory of appraisal. By applying appraisal framework (J. R. Martin & Rose, 2003) as the development of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, this descriptive qualitative study attempts to describe affect prosody in the tale of Jorinda and Jorindel. The study found that in the orientation the story is full with the good vibe linguistically represented by positive effect felt by the protagonist. It then changes radically into negative affect (antipathy, unhappiness, and insecurity) as well as the antagonist (antipathy), It then begins to return to equilibrium represented by the positive affect in the evaluation (happiness and security). It continues in the resolution where the positive affect (happiness) fulfills the protagonists’ hearts but not with the antagonists’. It is because her evil life has been over. The findings imply that the affect resonates from the positive to negative and returns to positive

Abstract

The digital era nowadays allows users to gain information easily and quickly. Many various kinds of search engines allow readers to find news in accordance with the information they need. However, in search engine usage, not all of the readers will look for the less popular news. According to Fintham, et al (2018) the readers only access the mainstream media sites with the reliability of a source of Uniform Resource Locator (URL). This has happened because those media has built a reputable image for the readers. However, the less popular media has limited entry-level in their search engines which results in their ways to change into clickbait strategy. Eye-catching headlines become the primary target in order to bring out the curiosity for the readers. This leads to change media’s position to be partisan where they make headlines that tend to focus on clicks only. The relevance of the news has not become a major priority. According to Muttaqin (2008) in writing news journalists are not allowed to enter personal opinions in written news. It clearly shows that the media’s position should be neutral. The news sites which only emphasize clicking need to be questioned. Therefore, this research is necessary to be conducted in order to analyze the standpoint of Indonesia’s online media through a post-truth perspective. Library research and close-reading methods are employed in this analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the position of the media in the digital age is increasingly unclear because most media no longer uphold the principles of journalism that Indonesian journalists present the news equally and fairly, including prioritizing accuracy, and not giving confusing facts and opinions.

Abstract

The argumentative essay seems to be challenging for university students (Ka-kan-dee & Kaur, 2015), including in Indonesia. Despite its prominence, this writing genre needs complex thoughts in the process of text making. As an impact, these troubles create hinders so that students show the poor quality in developing the essay. This issue motivated a study that aimed at highlighting the students’ mistakes in writing an argumentative essay through a mixed-method approach. The participants were chosen disorderly from university students majoring in English education and engaged in filling out the questionnaires and interviews sequentially. The explanation data analysis was then applied by means of construing the common problems coped with the participants quantitatively as well as qualitative analysis. The results of the analysis remarked that participants encountered numerous complexities in building the argumentative essay, especially low achievers. They revealed that the features of introduction, conclusion, and grammar were so stressful and high demanding to write so they required effective strategies as well as writing digital tools to resolve the challenges. Foreclosing, the last part of this study provides meaningful insight regarding the curricula of teaching argumentative essays, such as materials and instructions.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate sixth-semester students’ writing habits of English study program. In this research, the researcher has researched about the writing type of the students based on the composing style, and also the researcher research the writing habits that sixth-semester students do in general. The data were collected by the closed-ended questionnaire and interview. This study involved 73 students of English study program from four classes Reguler (A and B) and Reguler Mandiri (H and I). The findings indicated that most of the students were heavy reviser. The total percentages of planner are 27 students (36.99%), reviser 38 students (52.05%), and sequential composer 8 students (10.96%). It also supported by the interview result to know about the students’ writing habits that they were difficult to determine the ideas of writing and the storyline. While students who have habit in writing they have the regular time to write every day. They usually use formal and informal writing. In the language use they usually use combination Indonesia and English language. Then, the influences of social media depend on their need. Furthermore, for the students who do not have habit in writing because they really did not like writing much, they do not have a lot of time, less of the idea in writing, and less of the vocabulary. Therefore, they answered it indicated that they had low interested.

Abstract

There are three stages in epidemic psychology, they are fear and panic, moralization, and action to be taken (Strong, 1990), those stages are often reflected in the discourse when communicating and reporting a pandemic. When Covid-19 started to spread at the early stage, all countries including online media channels describe the effort in handling the epidemic as if the Covid-19 is a war and an enemy to fight. But over time, there is a shift on how the Covid-19 is metaphorically described, especially when there is no significant decrease of the infected patients. Instead of describing it as an enemy, there is a tendency to view the Covid-19 as someone or something to live with. This study aims to examine the use of metaphor in describing Covid-19 as an enemy to fight and the Covid-19 as someone or something to accept and to live with. The war metaphor shows an optimism in reducing and controlling the disease, whereas the metaphor of someone or something to live with shows the tendency of pessimism in dealing with the Covid-19 spread and is frequently used at the later months. Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) will be used as the theoretical background as it provides the framework to analyze metaphorical mapping. The study is qualitative and data will be taken from Indonesian online media news headlines that discuss the Covid-19 pandemic. The result shows that despite the pessimism entailments, the metaphor of FRIEND(SHIP) is far better in giving a positive image-schema particularly to ask people to live a new normal life with new healthy habits, whereas WAR metaphor will take people away from understanding the health issue. This study shall be an opening to further linguistics studies of Covid-19 discourse particularly in Indonesian context to contribute to the current issue worldwide.

Abstract

The year 2020 has a lot on its plate for African Americans to take and conquer. Not only that, they are dying from Covid-19 at higher rates compared to other races due to their pre-existing condition in the U.S., but they also still have to face the battle against racism in this era of Black Lives Matter. Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Christopher Cooper, and Chris Beaty are just a glimpse of violence against Black Americans exposed by social media, showing the world how American society is still corrupted and plagued by white fragility sensibility. Moreover, Black Americans are two-and-a-half times as likely as white Americans to be killed by the police, even though Black Americans only make up 13 percent of the U.S. population. These horrible incidents come from a distinct understanding between White and Black Americans, where Blacks are positioned to have an unshaken presumption of guilt simply because of being Blacks. This study aims at revealing a longstanding disdain for the truth as White people claiming to be fragile and sensible while subverting the reality and perjure themselves to racially framing Black people. In a society that Whites are dominant, Bourdieu’s theory on field, habitus, and capital are used here to analyze the post-truth of racial framing along with White Fragility and White Sensibility in American society coined by Robin DiAngelo.

Abstract

Native-is a view or a stereotype in language teaching, especially foreign languages, that relies on the belief that the most correct and appropriate method of learning English is conducted by Native English Speaking Teachers (NEST) (Holliday, 2005; Silalahi, 2019). This phenomenon has an impact on the emergence of labeling 'cultural stereotypes' and negative stigma on the quality of teaching of the non-native speaker (Wu & Ke, 2009). On the other hand, Non-NEST feels that the learning methods and styles used by NEST are not appropriate to the social and cultural context of learners. This is research which is specifically directed to analyze ideological conflict and focused on describing holistically Non-NEST perceptions of NEST teaching methods and styles. Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were conducted to be able to find out Non-NEST perceptions of the quality of NEST. The FGD was conducted with 18 informants from three different private higher educational institutions that carried out Teaching as a foreign language (TEAFL). 18 informants were divided into three groups, each consisting of 6 informants. Each informant was asked to answer and give opinions on a number of questions raised in the forum. All the answers and responses given by the informants can be used as the basis for argumentation in this study. This research is expected to be able to answer ideological problems and enrich knowledge about language ideology in the context of TEAFL.

Abstract

Abstract The post-truth culture is a circumstance when facts are less important than someone’s preferences, or in other words, emotions and feelings are more important than the truth. The post-truth culture happens in all fields of life, including in the literature work. In this study, the writer chooses to analyze Anne of Green Gables, a novel written by a Canadian author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. This classic children’s book tells a story about an eleven-year-old orphan girl named Anne Shirley, who was sent to middle-aged siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who had asked for a boy, not a girl, to help them on their farm. This paper aims to examine the real Lucy Maud Montgomery and a fictional Anne Shirley of Green Gables using the post-truth concept. The study found that Lucy Maud Montgomery is a Canadian author who gave a little touch of her real-life story in her novel. The story fills with the imaginations, emotions, and struggles of Anne Shirley that somehow blurred the borderline between the real life of LM Montgomery and Anne Shirley’s life in the fiction. As people nowadays pay more attention to their impression of a literary work that can touch their feelings rather than the truth behind the work, the readers are not fully informed of the facts that Montgomery’s real life is not as smooth as Anne Shirley’s life.
