Abstract

Malek Bennabi (1905–1973), a well-known Muslim reformist from Algeria, offered one of the most thoughtful and rational criticisms of liberal democracy within the broad framework of Muslim political theory. At the same time, he supported the political freedom that liberal democracy fostered. Bennabi identified three problems with liberal democracy. First, the theory and the reality of freedom diverge because liberal democracies both offer and deny their citizens the freedom that is guaranteed by constitutions and human rights declarations. Second, large private interest groups benefit from liberal democracies at the expense of the majority of citizens. Third, liberal democracies are vulnerable to class conflict as the divide widens between political and social principles leading to revolutions or coups that bring about socialist governments which reduce political freedoms. This article discusses Bennabi's views on Islam and democracy, including his criticism of liberal democracy for lacking social security and his view of democracy as freedom of choice and from want.

Abstract

At a time when Muhammad was approaching the Quraysh worshipping in the Ka’abah, the voice of a woman from the inside reacted: “to challenge the gods within the earshot of gods is dangerous. Unreasonable, Rebellious, Blasphemous”! The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace be upon him and his noble family and companions), was the first in the history of Islam to be accused of committing blasphemy against ‘gods’ and ‘goddesses’. His scanty following too, were accused of committing blasphemy and were brutally persecuted by the ruling Arab tribal confederation (the Quraysh) of Makkah at the time. The pattern of persecution to some extent equates the recent term of ‘jungle justice’ especially attributed to alleged blasphemers in Nigeria. The study of a documentary on the history of Muhammad and his struggle to establish Islam, titled ‘The Message’ (Arabic: ‘Risalah’), provides greater insights on the meaning of blasphemy and its implications on freedom of religion or belief (FORB), the right of women and slaves as well as the concept of martyrdom as a consolation to paradise. This paper sheds an interesting light on blasphemy in the context of this documentary, as well as illustrates its significance to the understanding of the Islamic position on Forb, the concept of martyrdom and the right of women and slaves.

Abstract

This study examines the religious values in the Pahargyan Adat Longkangan tradition in Teluk Sumbreng, Munjungan, Trenggalek, using Max Scheler’s perspective. Pahargyan Adat Longkangan is a ritual ceremony conducted as a form of gratitude by the fishing community for the bountiful results of the sea granted by Allah SWT. This study aims to explore the religious values embedded in this tradition, which reflects the syncretism between local culture and Islamic teachings. Through a qualitative approach and phenomenological analysis, this study finds that the Pahargyan Adat Longkangan tradition contains religious values, including gratitude, sincerity, and acknowledgment of spiritual forces. These values are analyzed using Max Scheler’s hierarchy of values, which includes the values of pleasure, vitality, spirituality, and sanctity. The findings of this research indicate that Pahargyan Adat Longkangan is a manifestation of a culture that blends elements of animism and Islam, serving as a religious expression in the lives of the Teluk Sumbreng community.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of sovereignty in a democratic system according to Murtadha Muthahhari, a prominent contemporary Muslim thinker who significantly contributed to modern Islamic political discourse. The study is motivated by the long-standing debate on the relationship between religion and state, which remains relevant today, particularly in Muslim-majority countries such as Indonesia and Iran. The main objective is to explore Muthahhari’s views on divine and popular sovereignty, as well as his formulation of a religious democracy distinct from Western secular democracy. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach and critical analysis of Muthahhari’s primary works, supported by relevant secondary literature. The findings reveal that Muthahhari rejected both the strict separation of religion and state and the idea of a pure theocracy. Instead, he proposed the model of “religious democracy,” which combines divine sovereignty with popular participation within the framework of Shi’a political thought through the concept of Wilāyah al-Faqīh. In this perspective, sovereignty ultimately belongs to God, yet the people retain a significant role in shaping governance. In conclusion, Muthahhari’s political thought provides an alternative perspective in contemporary Islamic political debates while also serving as a critique of Western democratic systems that are often considered secular and individualistic.

Abstract

This research uses qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach to make it easier for researchers to explore the meaning of concepts and personal experiences based on awareness, this awareness occurs in the self differently from each individual. By using Blumer's theory of analysis, namely Symbolic Intersectionalism to explain the position of the puppeteer (human being) who gives a hidden message or meaning of cultural values through puppetry Mbah Gandrung which he played to the audience (community). The result of this research is that the Islamic community in Pagung Village has the assumption that the Mbah Gandrung puppet has its own mystical side. Wayang Mbah Gandrung is also a punden in Pagung Village. Making the wayang Mbah Gandrung respected its existence by the community. The community is also grateful for the existence of the Mbah Gandrung puppet because it is a cultural heritage owned by Pagung Village. The existing changes in the performance of the Mbah Gandrung puppet coupled with Islamic prayers make people not think that responding to the Mbah Gandrung puppet is to confirm God. There has never been a conflict between Mbah Gandrung puppets because the community understands that this Mbah Gandrung puppet is also included in the artistic heritage that is owned by the dam must be preserved.

Abstract

Fasting in Ramadan is a mandatory rule for the Muslim. The Muslim community celebrate it once a year. However, it can influence society as well as people’s life. The objective of this study was to identify the factors that affect social bonding in the Muslim community. An explanatory sequential mixed-mode research approach was used to conduct the study. Through simple random sampling, 256 Muslims were selected for the survey. Three Muslims aged 50 and above were chosen for in-depth interviews from three wards, and six (three Imams of the three mosques and three community leaders of the respective three wards) were taken for key-informant interviews. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were performed to show the relationships among the variables. For qualitative data, thematic analysis was used. The study found that Muslims strongly supported almost all the issues mentioned, with 65percent demonstrating a strong social bond. The gender, education, occupation of the family head, family income and income earner of the Muslim community showed a significant relationship with social bond (p˂.001 or p˂.05). Education (OR-2.874 CI, 1.416-5.831) and family income (OR-1.728 CI, 1.060-2.818) were two positive and strong predictors of social bond for the Muslim community. On the other hand, income earners negatively influenced social bond in the Muslim community (OR-.456 CI, .245-.847). To increase social bond in the Muslim community, the community should be involved in education programs and employment more.
