Abstract

Several scholars argue that the dialogue between God and Satan in the prologue of the Book of Job can be omitted without consequence, suggesting that the narrative of suffering remains coherent even without this conversation. However, this article contends that this dialogue possesses crucial theological and narrative functions. Using a qualitative approach with textual analysis methods, this research comprises four integrated stages: (1) lexical analysis of Hebrew text to identify key terms such as tam, ?inn?m, and 'avdi; (2) narrative-ironic analysis that integrates the function of frame narrative and dramatic irony; (3) intertextual analysis connecting the dialogue with the tradition of the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 40–55) and Christ's suffering; and (4) synthesis of all four analyses. The findings demonstrate that the God-Satan dialogue creates essential dramatic irony that provides divine perspective to readers, builds the theme of "suffering without cause" (?inn?m), establishes Job's status as "my servant" ('avdi), and forms typological patterns linking Job to Christ. This dialogue is not a dispensable narrative element but a hermeneutical foundation that opens understanding of the irony of righteous suffering and the Christological typology in the Book of Job.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the transformation of the meaning of vows (nazar) in Alor society from theological and sociocultural perspectives. The main issue addressed in this research concerns the shift in the practice of vows from an expression of commitment of faith to God into a social instrument that is often used to seek revenge or to reinforce group pressure. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a fieldwork approach, including in-depth interviews with church and customary leaders, as well as an analysis of biblical texts and anthropological literature on religion. The findings reveal a tension between biblical teachings that emphasize love, forgiveness, and personal commitment, and local customary practices that position vows as instruments of social sanction and symbols of power. In conclusion, the church needs to play an active role in realigning the meaning of vows through contextual congregational education, an inculturation approach, and open dialogue with customary communities. The main recommendation of this study is the development of culturally based pastoral strategies to restore vows as expressions of faith that promote peace and social harmony within Alor society.

Abstract

This research is based on the problem of the lack of a contextual approach in proclaiming the Gospel to the indigenous Dayak Kerambay community, which often positions local culture as something that contradicts the Christian faith. As a result, the message of the Gospel is frequently difficult to accept and less relevant in the context of the local community’s life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of Tompo in Dayak Kerambay beliefs and to bring it into dialogue with the biblical concept of God as Creator as a form of Christian theological contextualization. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research with a theological-contextual approach, conducted through literature review, analysis of biblical texts, and examination of the cultural understanding and local beliefs of the Dayak Kerambay community. The results of the study show that the concept of Tompo can be theologically reinterpreted as a means of introducing God as the true Creator without negating local cultural identity. This approach has proven effective in bridging the Christian faith with local culture, strengthening the acceptance of the Gospel, and encouraging the church to view culture as part of God’s saving work in human history. Thus, contextualization becomes an important strategy in presenting a Gospel that is relevant, transformative, and faithful to its essence.

Abstract

This article employs a thematic analysis of Ecclesiastes 1:2–11 to elucidate the theological function of the phrase hebel as the conceptual framework of the book. A review of the extant literature reveals a general tendency among previous studies to emphasize the theme of the meaning of life in a broad sense or the book as a whole. Consequently, the prologue section has rarely been examined through thematic exegesis. Furthermore, previous studies have emphasized lexical analysis of hebel without relating it to the thematic structure of verses 2–11, so that the relationship between the verses and their contribution to the book's theological creed has not been fully explored. The passage is divided into five units by the study: hebel as a creed (verse 2), the limitations of human endeavor (verse 3), the cycle of the cosmos and transience (verses 4–7), existential weariness (verses 8–10), and historical oblivion (verse 11). The findings of the analysis demonstrate a progressive argument that affirms human limitations while criticizing empty optimism in life. This study makes a significant contribution to the field of wisdom theology by affirming that the passage under scrutiny serves to fortify the book's confrontational theological foundation. Moreover, it calls upon readers to adopt a God-centered orientation in life.
