Abstract

The rate of poverty in Kano State is still persisting due to the recent fuel subsidy removal and hyperinflation. It is estimated that over 10.5 million people, about 66.3 percent, are poor. In spite of the fact the state established the Zakat and Hubsi commissions in 2003 to combat poverty and inequality, limited progress has been witnessed. The question is why it is that Zakat cannot achieve its objective of reducing the poverty rate and gap between rich and poor in Kano State as it is done in Indonesia and Malaysia. The objective of the research is to explore the factors that militate against effective Zakat management for poverty alleviation in Kano State. To achieve the study objective, a qualitative method is adopted by conducting a semi-structured interview with three informants. The study findings revealed that inadequate funding and poor patronage, politicization of leadership of Zakat and Waqf institutions, lack of trust and confidence as well as lack of creativity and innovation as factors that militate effective management of Zakat in Kano State, Nigeria. The study recommended that the Zakat commission should be more proactive in tandem with the innovative approaches of other Muslim countries in the collection, distribution, and management of Zakat by adopting modern technology. This can help to improve public trust, confidence, and patronage. The Zakat commission should also be independent from political influence. It is evident that achieving an optimal level of Zakat management among Muslim communities has not been realized up till today, and there is a need for more research to explore various means to come up with the best alternative ways to address the problems hindering effective Zakat management in various locations among Muslim communities. This research is aimed at filling this gap by contributing to the literature.

Abstract

Digital marketing has changed how consumers engage with information and make decisions. In practice, different digital platforms act not only as promotional media but also as a way of influencing user behavior through the persuasive design of interfaces. One phenomenon that has been receiving increasing attention is that of dark patterns, which are design strategies that deliberately exploit consumers' cognitive biases to guide certain decisions. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of dark patterns from the perspective of maqashid syariah, especially in terms of the protection of reason (hifz al-‘aql) and the protection of wealth (hifz al-mal), and formulate the concept of “consumer cognitive intelligence” as a form of response to the manipulative practices in the digital environment. This study employs a qualitative approach using an integrative literature review design, limitedly combined with the principles of a systematic literature review in the literature search and selection process. The results indicate that dark patterns not only cause economic losses but also have the potential to distort consumers’ thought processes and their freedom to make decisions. On the other hand, this study emphasizes that consumer protection is not sufficient through regulation and business ethics alone but also requires strengthening individuals’ internal capacities. Therefore, this study proposes the concept of “consumer cognitive intelligence from a maqashid perspective” as the ability to recognize, evaluate, and respond to digital information critically, consciously, and ethically. This study is expected to expand the study of Islamic marketing in a digital context while contributing to the discourse on contemporary marketing ethics.

Abstract

Growing awareness among Muslim consumers who increasingly seek shopping experiences that are not merely functional but also spiritually meaningful has compelled businesses to adopt more holistic marketing strategies. This study examines the influence of sensory marketing, price, and product quality on customer satisfaction at Ahbab Store Pontianak, framed within the Sharia business perspective. A quantitative causal-associative design was employed, involving 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling from the store's loyal customer base. Data were collected via a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analysed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS 4.0. The measurement model demonstrated satisfactory convergent validity (AVE > 0.50) and reliability (Composite Reliability > 0.70) across all constructs. The R-Square value of 0.539 indicates moderate explanatory power. Bootstrapping results confirm that all three variables exert a positive and significant influence on customer satisfaction: sensory marketing (β = 0.475; t = 6.551; p = 0.000), price (β = 0.395; t = 5.503; p = 0.000), and product quality (β = 0.351; t = 5.277; p = 0.000). Sensory marketing emerged as the strongest predictor, affirming that Islamically-designed sensory experiences such as Quranic recitation, bukhoor fragrance, and Islamic visual aesthetics can substantially shape customer satisfaction. These findings contribute to Islamic marketing theory and offer actionable guidance for Sharia-based SMEs in developing ethically grounded and commercially effective marketing strategies. Abstract

This study analyzes the legal construction and implementation of Ijarah Muntahiyah bi al-Tamlik (IMBT) within Indonesian Islamic banking from the perspective of legal pluralism and Islamic contract theory. Although IMBT is formally recognized as a Sharia-compliant lease-to-own financing instrument based on DSN-MUI Fatwa No. 27/2002, its practical implementation reveals a complex interaction between Sharia principles, state financial regulation, and institutional banking practices. This study employs a normative legal research method with statute, conceptual, and analytical approaches to examine the juridical structure of IMBT within Indonesia’s dual legal system. The findings indicate that IMBT operates as a composite legal structure combining ijarah and bay’, where the separation between contracts is often procedural rather than substantive. This condition generates a normative–institutional gap between classical Islamic contract theory and its modern financial implementation. Furthermore, the study reveals that regulatory dualism between DSN-MUI and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) contributes to interpretive fragmentation in IMBT execution. The novelty of this study lies in its reconceptualization of IMBT as a regulatory hybrid legal institution shaped by legal pluralism rather than a purely doctrinal Sharia contract. The study contributes to Islamic financial law literature by offering a critical framework for understanding the interaction between fiqh muamalah, regulatory governance, and banking standardization. The findings suggest the need for greater harmonization between Sharia governance and national financial regulation to ensure both doctrinal integrity and legal certainty in Islamic banking practice.
