Abstract

Trust is a fundamental element for sustaining student organizations, and its development is strongly influenced by the quality of interpersonal communication among members. Within the Muhammadiyah Student Association (Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah/IMM), diverse member backgrounds and organizational dynamics often create challenges in establishing harmonious and trusting relationships. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of interpersonal communication among IMM members in Samarinda as a means of fostering mutual trust. A qualitative study employing a transcendental phenomenological approach was conducted with ten purposively selected participants, consisting of active members, alumni, and the chairman of the IMM Samarinda branch. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using Moustakas' phenomenological analysis supported by NVivo software. Data credibility was ensured through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and member checking. The findings revealed seven major themes: interpersonal communication as the foundation of trust, gradual self-disclosure, interpersonal needs as communication drivers, supportive leadership communication as a catalyst for trust, the role of informal communication in fostering closeness, communication barriers in trust formation, and the greater effectiveness of face-to-face communication compared with digital communication in building trust. The study concludes that trust develops through continuous interaction, self-disclosure, shared experiences, and a supportive communication climate. These findings contribute to the understanding of trust formation by demonstrating that cognitive, affective, and behavioral processes interact to strengthen interpersonal communication within student organizations.

Abstract

The rapid growth of financial influencers (finfluencers) has transformed digital financial communication, making visual representation an increasingly important mechanism for constructing credibility and authority. This study examines how Timothy Ronald's Ronald Media Launch video constructs financial authority through symbolic visual communication. Employing a qualitative single-case study design, the research applies Roland Barthes' semiotic framework, supported by Critical Visual Methodology, to analyse narrative structure, visual symbolism, material properties, and institutional collaboration. The findings reveal that financial authority is progressively constructed through multiple forms of legitimacy. The Reflective–Private Phase establishes moral legitimacy through Visual Askesis, the Ideological Enlightenment Phase develops ideological, cultural, and technocratic legitimacy, while the Social Expansion Phase secures public legitimacy through spectacle, opinion leadership, and institutional collaboration. These interconnected forms of legitimacy are further reinforced through a coherent system of material properties that consistently communicates financial authority. The study proposes the concept of the Fantasy of Meritocracy to explain how ideological branding naturalizes financial success as the outcome of individual discipline, rationality, and visionary leadership while obscuring the structural conditions underlying economic opportunity. These findings contribute to communication studies by extending discussions of ideological branding and visual communication within Indonesia's digital financial ecosystem.

Abstract

Love languages have become an important way for Generation Z to express affection and maintain friendships. By fostering emotional comfort and trust, they may encourage greater self-disclosure in interpersonal relationships. This study aims to examine the role of love language use in promoting self-disclosure among Generation Z friends. Guided by Altman and Taylor’s Social Penetration Theory, this study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore participants’ lived experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six Generation Z participants who actively practiced love languages in their friendships. The findings reveal that participants perceived love language as facilitating self-disclosure by creating emotional comfort and encouraging them to share personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences with trusted friends. Words of affirmation and quality time were the most frequently experienced forms of love language, whereas receiving gifts was mentioned least often. Participants consistently described these two forms as facilitating a greater amount of disclosure. However, they perceived love language as having a more limited role in the honesty and accuracy dimension of self-disclosure, which they associated more closely with individual characteristics and perceived trustworthiness. Overall, participants experienced love language as fostering emotional closeness and facilitating more open interpersonal communication within Generation Z friendships.

Abstract

Brand awareness is a key factor influencing consumers' ability to recognize and recall a brand, particularly in the highly competitive hospitality industry. This study aims to measure the brand awareness of Aloft Surabaya Pakuwon City among Surabaya residents using Aaker's Brand Awareness Hierarchy. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed by distributing structured questionnaires to 400 respondents aged 17–60 years who had visited Pakuwon City Mall. Data were collected using a Guttman-scale questionnaire consisting of four brand elements: brand name, logo and symbol, URLs, and packaging. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Guttman scalogram analysis. The results indicate that Aloft Surabaya Pakuwon City has reached the Brand Recall level, with an average score of 0.71, demonstrating that respondents are generally able to recognize and recall the hotel brand when prompted, although it has not yet achieved Top-of-Mind Awareness. The findings suggest that strengthening integrated marketing communication, digital branding, and experiential marketing initiatives is essential to enhance brand awareness and improve the hotel's competitive position in Indonesia's hospitality industry.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the process of self-disclosure in interpersonal communication between female Roblox players and their male friends, beginning in the digital space and developing into real-world friendships. This study uses a qualitative approach with a single case study design based on multiple units of analysis, in which the single case examined is the phenomenon of self-disclosure on the Roblox platform as a whole, with three pairs of informants (one female Roblox player and one male friend she met through the platform) serving as units of analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and non-participant observation of personal conversations between informants, analyzed with the aid of NVivo. The findings reveal five main results: Roblox functions as a safe space constructed differently by each informant according to her psychological barriers; self-disclosure develops gradually from shallow to personal topics as trust increases; men tend to open up first, yet women initiate the move to a more private platform; face-to-face meetings function as a relational bridge that verifies trust built online; and the resulting friendships are unexpected. This study contributes to self-disclosure research by showing that digital self-disclosure is actively constructed by users according to their own psychological needs.
