Abstract

Early literacy skills serve as a crucial foundation for cognitive and language development. This study aims to describe the improvement of literacy skills in children aged 5-6 years through the use of Riau folklore storybooks. The research method employed was Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles. The subjects consisted of 11 children (7 boys and 4 girls) in Group B of TK Mustika Bunda Pekanbaru. Data were collected through observation and documentation, then analyzed using descriptive comparative techniques. The results showed a significant increase in children's literacy skills. During the pre-cycle stage, the majority of children (63.6%) were in the "Starting to Develop" (MB) category. After the intervention in Cycle I, 45.4% of children reached the "Developed as Expected" (BSH) category. The most significant improvement occurred in Cycle II, where 81.8% of children achieved the "Very Well Developed" (BSB) category. These findings conclude that integrating local wisdom through Riau folklore storybooks is effective in stimulating early childhood literacy skills in an interactive and contextual manner.

Abstract

The singing approach is one of the most effective methods in early childhood learning. Singing is not only fun for children, but also has many developmental benefits, including language development, motor skills, social skills, and even cognitive skills. This study aims to determine the formation of moral values in early childhood towards the instilling of children's character and to determine the supporting and inhibiting factors of the singing method towards the instilling of character in early childhood. This study uses a qualitative approach using three main techniques in data collection, namely interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis uses the approach proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994), which includes three main steps: data condensation, presenting data (data display), and drawing conclusions or verification (conclusion drawing and verification). The results of the study show that (1) the singing method is proven to be effective in forming moral values and characters of honesty, discipline, caring, and cooperation in children aged 5-6 years through specific song lyrics, repetitive rhythms, and social interaction., (2) Supporting and inhibiting factors of the singing method towards the instilling of character in early childhood. Supporting factors dominate, with conducive classroom facilities, teacher-parent collaboration, and local lyrics increasing participation. While inhibiting factors include the heterogeneity of shy children, limited time (twice a week), and distractions from gadgets that lead to forgetting lyrics. This research serves as a model for early childhood education (PAUD) that can be replicated nationally, proving that the traditional art of singing effectively addresses the challenges of early childhood character education in the digital age by integrating local cultural preservation.

Abstract

The decline in gross motor skills in early childhood due to the dominance of digital activities and the lack of traditional physical games is a major concern in Indonesian Early Childhood Education (PAUD). This study aims to describe the implementation of traditional Ma'boy game activities in early childhood and to determine the description of gross motor skills of early childhood after being given traditional Ma'boy game activities. Ma'boy is a Bugis-Makassar team game that involves throwing a ball into a pile of used milk cans, running to avoid the opponent's throw, and rearranging the can tower. The study used a quantitative approach with a one-group pre-test post-test design on 30 children aged 4-6 years. Implementation data were collected through a Likert observation sheet (1-5), while gross motor skills were measured with the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 (TGMD-2). Data analysis used descriptive statistics and paired t-test (SPSS 26, α=0.05). The results showed excellent implementation of Ma'boy (mean = 4.72, SD = 0.45), with consistently optimal aspects of equipment preparation/hompimpa (4.80), throwing/running (4.70), and ball arrangement/dodging (4.65). Gross motor skills improved significantly from a pre-test mean of 21.80 (moderate category) to a post-test mean of 33.15 (high category), with an increase of Δ = 11.35 points (t = 14.85, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 3.12). The ball throwing (Δ = 2.40) and running (Δ = 1.80) subtests showed the highest progress, consistent with the game dynamics. The conclusions confirm that Ma'boy is excellent and effective in improving gross motor skills in early childhood. The implications of this study recommend the integration of Ma'boy into the national Early Childhood Education (PAUD) curriculum as a local cultural intervention to address motor deficits caused by a sedentary lifestyle, with recommendations for larger-scale replication of the study using a control group design.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the complexity of managing children with speech delay accompanied by tantrum behavior in the school environment. The study aims to describe the teacher's role in assisting children with speech delay who experience tantrums at TK ABA II Pekanbaru. A qualitative method with a case study approach was employed, focusing on a 6-year-old boy. Data collection techniques included participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that teachers play crucial roles as facilitators, mentors, role models, and motivators. Strategies for handling speech delay involve activity-based language stimulation such as reading books, singing, and role-playing. Meanwhile, tantrums are managed through a persuasive approach by maintaining calmness, providing time-out sessions, and engaging in therapeutic communication once the child's emotions stabilize. The study concludes that the synergy between psychological assistance and language stimulation is vital in determining the child's successful adaptation in school.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of kawin sumbong in Desa Baru Lempur, Gunung Raya District, Kerinci Regency, focusing on its implementation, existence, and its review from the perspective of Islamic law. Although considered a violation of customary norms, this tradition is not intended to prevent marriage but to enforce moral responsibility and maintain social harmony. This research employs Spradley’s ethnographic approach using qualitative methods through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, including data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing until saturation was achieved. The findings reveal that kawin sumbong requires a customary fine in the form of one goat and the ulu nasi ritual as a symbolic act of atonement. After fulfilling the customary requirements, the marriage proceeds and the couple is socially accepted. Despite modernization, this tradition continues to exist. From an Islamic legal perspective, the practice does not invalidate the marriage because it does not contradict syariah provisions regarding permissible kinship. The customary fine functions as a moral symbol to preserve peace, prevent family conflict, and strengthen kinship ties.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of developing early childhood numeracy skills through concrete and sustainable media. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of ecobrick activities in stimulating children's numeracy skills, analyze their impact, and identify challenges and opportunities in their implementation. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data was collected through observations, interviews, and documentation of children's activities when processing plastic waste into ecobricks. The results of the study show that ecobrick activities significantly stimulate children's numeracy skills through three main aspects: 1) The use of numbers and symbols, where children learn to recognize and count the number of bottles and garbage concretely; 2) Contextual problem solving, through estimation of material needs and comparison of sizes (weight and length); and 3) Simple data-driven decision-making in project work. The main challenge found is the consistency of material availability, while the opportunity lies in the integration of environmental education in the PAUD curriculum. In conclusion, ecobricks are effective as an interactive numeracy learning medium while instilling the character of caring for the environment from an early age.
