Abstract

The evolution of digital technology, particularly the TikTok platform, has transformed the landscape of intercultural communication into a global discursive space for the expression and negotiation of complex identities. This study critically analyzes TikTok's role in shaping intercultural tolerance by questioning the effectiveness of algorithms amidst the risks of information bias and stereotypes. The research method employed is a qualitative literature study with thematic analysis techniques applied to 12 selected scientific articles indexed in SINTA and Scopus (2020–2025). The results indicate that TikTok functions as a performative arena where users construct digital personas through stylization and code-mixing strategies to enhance intercultural sensitivity. However, this study asserts a contradiction in algorithmic mechanisms that potentially reinforce fragmented cultivation patterns and the dominance of specific cultures (digital imperialism). These findings identify that the platform's effectiveness in fostering substantive tolerance heavily relies on the synergy between users' critical media literacy and the development of inclusive content to minimize communication conflicts.

Abstract

In the digital era, mosques serve not only as places of worship but also as centers for da'wah communication and social development. Advances in information technology have transformed patterns of community interaction, including the dissemination of religious values and social activities. Today, mosques face both challenges and opportunities in utilizing digital media to strengthen their strategic role within an increasingly connected society. The aim of this study is to analyze the role of mosques as centers of da'wah communication and social development in the digital era, as well as to identify optimal strategies for enhancing mosque functions in response to social and technological changes. The research employs a qualitative approach, using case studies of several mosques in major cities that actively utilize digital media. Research samples were selected purposively, and data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of digital documents related to mosque activities. The results show that mosques that adapt to digital technology are able to increase the reach of da'wah and the effectiveness of social programs. The use of social media and digital applications strengthens communication between mosque administrators and congregants, as well as encourages active community participation in religious and social activities. Mosques play a vital role in fostering da'wah and social communication in the digital era, with technology utilization serving as a key strategy to expand influence and strengthen community solidarity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of Islamic preaching ethics on social media by highlighting the tension between educational and popularity orientation. The preaching transformation to the digital space presents opportunities for wider dissemination, but at the same time poses risks of substance reduction, commodification of religion, and a shift in religious authority. The research focuses on how preachers and audiences negotiate the value of preaching in a competitive algorithmic ecosystem. A qualitative approach was used with three main techniques: analysis of da'wah video content on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram; in-depth interviews with preachers and audiences; and virtual observation of digital interactions. Data validity maintained through sources and methods triangulation. The findings reveal that digital da’wah operates within a spectrum of education and popularity, where sensational content often deviates from ethical standards, audiences face ambiguity in assessing quality, and religious authority shifts from scholarly legitimacy to algorithm-driven popularity. Nevertheless, ethical practices can be maintained through creative adaptation strategies such as storytelling, visualization, and healthy interaction with audiences. The main contribution of this study is the development of an ethical framework for digital da’wah that is adaptive to algorithmic logic while preserving scholarly substance, thereby offering a new perspective for the study of Islamic preaching in the social media era. This study concludes that the ethics of Islamic preaching in the digital era are not merely a matter of right or wrong according to religious law, but rather a strategy of adaptation to the logic of virality. The main contribution of this research lies in the formulation of a relevant, critical, and operational ethical framework for digital da’wah, which can serve as a reference for preachers, audiences, and religious institutions in maintaining the integrity of preaching within the digital public sphere.
