Abstract

Background: Appendectomy is a surgical procedure to treat appendicitis, but postoperative pain is a common complication. If left unmanaged, pain can affect sleep, delay healing, increase sympathetic activity, and cause emotional distress. Non-pharmacological methods such as deep breathing relaxation are safe and effective options to manage this pain. Deep breath relaxation techniques have been shown to effectively reduce pain intensity by relaxing muscle spasm, which is caused by an increase in prostaglandins, leading to vasodilation and increased blood flow to areas of spasm and ischemia. In addition, this technique can stimulate the release of endogenous opioids, such as enkephalins and endorphins. Enkephalins function as neurotransmitters that regulate pain, emotions and stress, while endorphins provide a sense of relaxation, comfort and calmness to the body. According to WHO (World Health Organization) in 2022, the number of deaths due to appendicitis reached 21,000 clients with the number of male sufferers being higher than female. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of deep breathing relaxation techniques in reducing acute pain in post-appendectomy patients. Methods: This was a qualitative case study involving two postoperative patients. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and pain scale assessments using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), before and after applying deep breathing techniques for 3 days (twice daily for 10–15 minutes). Results: Both patients showed a decrease in pain levels, with improved indicators such as reduced grimacing, restlessness, and normalized vital signs. Conclusion: Deep breathing relaxation techniques are effective in lowering acute pain levels in appendectomy patients and can be used as supportive nursing care alongside pharmacological treatment.

Abstract

Background : School-aged children aged 7–12 years experience rapid growth and development that require adequate nutritional intake, including fruits and vegetables. However, fruit and vegetable consumption among Indonesian children remains low. Lack of consumption may increase the risk of vision problems, fatigue, mouth ulcers, and bleeding gums. One factor influencing children’s consumption behavior is limited knowledge regarding the importance of fruits and vegetables. Animated video media are considered attractive and easy to understand, making them suitable for improving children’s knowledge. Preliminary studies at SDN Serangan Kota Yogyakarta showed that students had limited understanding regarding the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables. Objective : To determine the effect of animated video education on children’s knowledge regarding the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables at SDN Serangan Kota Yogyakarta. Methods : This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The research was conducted at SDN Serangan Kota Yogyakarta from September 2024 to June 2025. The sample consisted of 35 students in grades III–VI selected using a total sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using a knowledge questionnaire consisting of 22 questions covering the definition, types, benefits, and impacts of inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption. The questionnaire had been tested for validity and reliability, with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.834. Knowledge scores were categorized into low, moderate, and good levels. The intervention used an animated educational video developed by the researcher containing information on the benefits of fruits and vegetables, recommended consumption, and the effects of inadequate intake. The video was shown twice on the same day. Data were analyzed using the Marginal Homogeneity test. Result : Before the intervention, 21 students (60.0%) had low knowledge levels, 8 students (22.9%) had moderate knowledge, and 6 students (17.1%) had good knowledge. After the intervention, knowledge levels improved, with 33 students (94.3%) categorized as having good knowledge and 2 students (5.7%) having moderate knowledge. The Marginal Homogeneity test showed a p-value of <0.001, indicating a significant effect of animated video education on children’s knowledge regarding the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables. Conclusion : Animated video-based education effectively improved elementary school students’ knowledge regarding the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables. Animated videos can be used as an engaging and effective educational medium to support nutrition education programs in schools and encourage healthier eating behaviors among children.

Abstract

Background : Body perception disorders, such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), are psychological conditions often rooted in negative body image and commonly emerge during adolescence. Left untreated, BDD can lead to serious consequences, including social withdrawal, self- harm, and even suicide. Understanding the link between body image and BDD is crucial for developing effective preventive interventions. Objective : This study aims to determine the relationship between body image and body dysmorphic disorder in adolescents at SMK Negeri 2 Godean . Methods :  The  design  was  a  quantitative  correlational  with  a  cross-sectional. The sample was 75 grade eleven students from three majors selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Inclusion criteria aged 15-18 years and still actively enroled, and exclusion criteria had medically diagnosed mental disorders, routine medication, and physical disabilities that made it difficult to assess body image. Data were collected  using  valid  and  reliable  body  image  and body dysmorphic disorder questionnaires. Chi-Square test was used for data analysis. Result : Most respondents had a positive body image as many as 52 respondents(69.3%) and negative as many as 23 respondents(30.7%). For body dysmorphic disorder, 32 respondents (42.7%) were in the moderate category, 27 respondents (36%) in the severe category, and 16 respondents (21.3%) in the mild category. Chi-Square test results showed a p value  =0.333 (p> 0.05), which means there is no significant relationship between body image and BDD in students of SMK 2 Godean. Conclusion :  There is no statistically significant relationship between body image and body dysmorphic disorder, with a negative relationship direction. The limitation of this study was that there are lack control over two factors, self-efficacy or self-confidence and the social support system originating from teachers, family, and peers. Therefore, future studies are expected to control other variables that may influence body dysmorphic disorder, including self-efficacy, social support, and the influence of social media on adolescents’ perceptions.
