Abstract

Critical thinking skills have become one of the essential competencies that students must possess in the era of rapidly advancing technology. In the midst of an overwhelming flow of information, students can no longer passively accept information at face value they must be able to critically filter and analyze it wisely. Unfortunately, at SMP Ma'arif NU Paguyangan, students' mathematical critical thinking skills remain relatively low. This is mainly due to the continued reliance on conventional lecture methods and the use of textbooks as the primary learning resource. Starting from this problem, this study aims to develop a mathematics learning medium in the form of an interactive video that integrates Islamic values. This media is designed to be valid and effective in enhancing the critical thinking skills of eighth-grade students. The study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with a quasi-experimental approach to test the effectiveness of the developed product. The results of the study indicate that the developed learning video is declared valid and feasible for use. Validation by subject matter experts yielded a score of 80%, media experts 81.42%. Additionally, the video has proven to be effective in improving students' critical thinking skills, as evidenced by the average N-Gain score of the experimental class reaching 0.8 (categorized as “high”), significantly better than the control class, which only achieved 0.43 (categorized as “medium”). Data analysis using an independent two-sample t-test resulted in a significance value of 0.000, which is far below the 0.05 threshold. This means the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed interactive mathematics learning video, in addition to being validated by experts and teachers, has also been proven effective in improving the critical thinking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Ma'arif NU Paguyangan

Abstract

This research is based on students who think that math is a difficult and boring subject. Learning math is just something that complicates life without seeing the relevance to the real world, so they lose interest. This has an impact on low learning outcomes, developing a negative attitude towards learning. Therefore, there is a need for new innovations to support learning, so as to increase student attractiveness. This research focuses on identifying the analysis of mathematical concepts in the Museum Wayang and Artifact Purbalingga. This research uses descriptive qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. Where the data findings come from the results of documentation, observation, and interviews. Data analysis techniques carried out using Spradley's data analysis techniques, namely domain analysis, taxonomy, componential, and cultural themes. Domain analysis found the domains of objects, tools, animals, and motifs. Taxonomy analysis in the form of a concept map, componential analysis in the form of a review of each component. Analysis of cultural themes found seven sub-themes namely flat buildings, space buildings, symmetry and congruence, sets, permutations, number patterns and reflections. The results of this study indicate the existence of mathematical concepts in the Museum Wayang and Artifact Purbalingga, namely, the concept of flat shapes, spaces, congruence, sets, permutations, number patterns and reflections found in the collection of wayang and artifacts.

Abstract

Mathematical understanding ability is a basic and most important ability in learning mathematics so that it must be mastered by students. This is because each mathematical concept has its own relationship. Students with mild mental retardation at SLB Negeri Mandiraja have low mathematical understanding ability. This is because learning still uses media that does not adapt to the characteristics of mentally retarded students so that students find it difficult to understand learning. Therefore, learning media has a very important role in supporting learning including improving students' mathematical understanding ability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop valid and effective Pop-Up Book media to improve students' mathematical understanding ability. The method used in this study is Research and Development (R&D). The results of this study indicate that the media developed is valid and interesting to use with a percentage of material expert validation of 80%, media expert validation of 96.7%, trials by mathematics teachers of 86%, and field trials of 90.2%. In addition, the Pop-Up Book learning media was also declared effective with an N-Gain score of 0.781. This study concludes that Pop-Up Book media is effective in improving the mathematical understanding abilities of students with mild mental retardation.

Abstract

Parental involvement is widely recognized as a crucial factor in students’ educational outcomes, yet its specific influence on mathematical proficiency remains contested. This study investigated the levels of parental involvement and mathematical proficiency among 210 Senior High School STEM students from public schools in Digos City, Philippines, and examined the relationship between these variables. Using a descriptive–correlational design, parental involvement was measured through three indicators—school works, class works, and parental guidance and support—while mathematical proficiency was assessed across five domains: number sense, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis, based on the NAEP framework. Results revealed high overall parental involvement, particularly in school works and guidance, but students’ mathematical proficiency remained at the beginning level, with the lowest performance in data analysis. No significant overall correlation emerged between parental involvement and mathematical proficiency, though a positive relationship was found between parental engagement in school works and performance in data analysis. These findings suggest that while general parental support may not directly enhance overall mathematics achievement, targeted involvement in specific learning tasks can positively influence particular areas of mathematical learning. Implications for parent-focused instructional support are discussed.

Abstract

The pursuit of understanding the role of mathematics in society has been a longstanding concern in mathematics education, dating back to ancient civilizations such as Greece and Egypt, where mathematics was valued for its problem-solving and practical applications. Recently, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has emphasized the need for mathematics education to prepare students for an increasingly complex and technologically driven world. Within this historical context, this quantitative study investigated the views of 91 University mathematics pre-service teachers (PSTs) regarding the existence and future of mathematics. The study used a questionnaire to collect data, which was then analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) and presented in tables, pie charts, and bar charts. The findings suggest that PSTs can provide reasons for the existence of mathematics, reasons for learning mathematics, and ideas about how mathematics should be taught and learned in the 21st century. The study's results have implications for teaching and learning mathematics, highlighting the importance of understanding the historical development of mathematics, as well as its current and future applications, to prepare PSTs to teach mathematics in a way that is relevant and engaging to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and examine the effectiveness of the Smart Pocket Board (Pakapin) media in improving elementary school students’ mathematical problem-solving skills on addition and subtraction topics. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects were second-grade students at SDN Pekalongan II. Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, and expert validation, and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, with effectiveness measured using the N-gain test. The results indicate that the Pakapin media achieved a feasibility level of 84.33%, categorized as feasible based on expert validation. The effectiveness test shows a significant improvement in students’ problem-solving skills, with an N-gain score of 0.71 (high category). Student and teacher responses reached 85.67% and 88%, respectively, both categorized as highly feasible. These findings suggest that Pakapin is effective in enhancing problem-solving skills through concrete and interactive learning. The study highlights the importance of manipulative media in supporting conceptual understanding and student engagement in elementary mathematics learning.
