Abstract

Inclusive and compulsory participation strategy of teaching mathematics is designed to ensure that all the learners and the teacher are involved in the teaching and learning process. A pretest, posttest, quasi-experimental design study was carried out with 275 senior secondary school class two (SSC2) students to test the effectiveness of the model. They were divided into experimental group of 135 students, taught construction and loci using inclusive and compulsory participation strategy and control group comprising 140 students, taught the same topic using conventional strategy. The result showed that the experimental group had a mean score of 87% and standard deviation of 7% as against mean of 53% and standard deviation of 9% obtained by the control group. This give a t-test score of 34.76 which is greater than the critical value of t = 1.96 at 0.05 level of significance, implying that there existed a significant difference in the achievement, in favour of the experimental group with higher mean score. Similarly, the attitude test scores were 73% with standard deviation od 5% for the experimental group while the control group had a mean attitude score of 49% and standard deviation of 6%, giving t-test of 35.95 showing that there is a significant difference in the attitude score of the groups with the experimental group having higher mean attitude score of 73% as against 49% and standard deviation of 5% and 6% respectively obtained by the experimental and control groups. The model and its strategy is highly recommended.

Abstract

The results of observations that have been made in class X E9 SMA Negeri 5 Purwokerto show that the problem that exists in Mathematics learning is the lack of student independence, many students do not carry out independent evaluations individually and according to their abilities. There are still students who lack awareness in preparing themselves before the learning process begins. This can be seen when the teacher starts learning activities, only a small number of students prepare themselves before the learning process begins. When students are given an assignment, they don't do it straight away but still depend on their friends, for example, if they are given practice questions, they still look at their friends' answers. Seeing this, learning is needed that actively involves students and can make students dare to try to use their own abilities in solving problems. Therefore, the author is interested in this research. Learning with the Problem Based Learning model accompanied by TaRL and CRT approaches in Probability material in class X E9 SMA Negeri 5 Purwokerto can increase the percentage of students' learning independence from cycle I to cycle III by 39.6%.

Abstract

This research investigates the influence of peer groups on students' academic performance in mathematics courses at the university level, with a specific focus on Morogoro Municipality. The study aims to understand the dynamics of peer interaction and its impact on students' mathematical learning outcomes. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative analysis of academic performance data with qualitative exploration of peer group dynamics through interviews and surveys. Encompassing all students in higher education institutions in Morogoro Municipal, the study includes a sample of 200 students randomly selected from four universities. Data collection methods involved questionnaires and interviews to glean insights into peer interaction patterns, academic performance, and demographic characteristics. Quantitative data collected undergo coding and Chi-square computation, facilitated by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20, enabling researchers to discern correlations between peer dynamics and academic achievement. Findings suggest that peer groups play a significant role in shaping students' attitudes, study habits, and academic achievement in mathematics. Positive peer interactions foster collaboration, motivation, and deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, leading to improved performance. Conversely, negative peer influences, such as social distractions and peer pressure, can hinder academic progress. Understanding the mechanisms through which peer groups influence academic performance can inform educational interventions and support systems aimed at enhancing mathematical learning outcomes at the university level.
