Abstract

Background: Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease worldwide, with suboptimal adherence to maintenance therapy, resulting in increased exacerbations, hospitalizations, and mortality. Digital interventions, including electronic monitoring devices, smart inhalers, smart spacers, mobile applications, and SMS reminders, have emerged as innovative strategies to improve adherence and clinical outcomes. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of digital interventions in enhancing adherence to maintenance therapy in asthma patients, assess clinical and economic impacts. Method: Review was conducted on eight RCTs and observational studies evaluating digital interventions in adult and pediatric asthma patients. Key outcomes included adherence, inhaler technique, asthma control, quality of life, exacerbation prediction, and cost-effectiveness. Result: Digital interventions consistently improved adherence by up to 23% compared with control, enhanced inhalation technique, and improved asthma control and quality of life. Machine learning algorithms integrated with smart inhalers accurately predicted impending exacerbations, allowing proactive management. Long-term studies indicated cost savings through reduced use of add-on biologic therapies. In children, adherence and inhaler technique were shown to be distinct aspects, requiring targeted educational strategies. Conclusion: Digital interventions effectively improve adherence and clinical outcomes in asthma patients. These strategies have potential to support personalized and cost-effective asthma management. Further research is needed to evaluate long-term effectiveness and real-world implementation.

Abstract

Background : The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders poses a major challenge to global health systems. A key determinant of successful chronic disease therapy is patient adherence to medication, which remains low, particularly among populations with limited access to healthcare services. Pharmacists play a crucial role in supporting medication adherence through digital technology–based interventions, such as telepharmacy and mobile health applications. The digitalization of pharmacy services enables improved access, therapy monitoring, and continuous communication between pharmacists and patients. Objective : This study aims to explore the implementation of digital technology by pharmacists in enhancing medication adherence among patients with chronic diseases. Method : A narrative review was conducted through a search of the PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar databases for articles published between 2015 and 2025. Inclusion criteria were applied based on the relevance to pharmacist-led interventions and adherence outcomes among patients with chronic diseases. Ten eligible articles were selected and analyzed qualitatively. Result : The review findings indicate that digital interventions by pharmacists—including telepharmacy, mobile applications, web-based systems, and short message reminders—consistently improve medication adherence and clinical outcomes among patients. Several studies reported reductions in Drug-Related Problems (DRPs), improvements in quality of life, and better control of clinical parameters such as blood pressure and glucose levels. The success of these interventions is influenced by patients’ digital literacy, the support of the healthcare system, and the frequency of communication between pharmacists and patients. Identified barriers include limited internet access, low digital literacy among elderly patients, and insufficient interprofessional collaboration. Conclusion : The utilization of digital technology in pharmaceutical interventions has proven effective in improving medication adherence and clinical outcomes among patients with chronic diseases. The role of pharmacists as digital care facilitators serves as a key factor in achieving these positive results. The integration of telepharmacy and health applications into primary care services holds great potential to expand access and support a more inclusive and sustainable health system. Keywords: telepharmacy, digital technology, medication adherence, chronic disease.

Abstract

Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) essential oil exhibits therapeutic activities such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects, making it a potential active ingredient for topical pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. However, essential oils are highly volatile, resulting in instability and limited effectiveness. A nanotechnology-based approach, particularly nanoemulsion systems, has emerged as an effective strategy to improve stability, bioavailability, and skin penetration of essential oils. This study aimed to evaluate the particle size and physical properties of nanoemulgel formulations that meet acceptable quality requirements. Peppermint leaf essential oil was formulated into nanoemulgel preparations at a concentration of 5% in Formula 1 and 10% in Formula 2, followed by evaluation of particle size and physical characteristics. The results of the physical characterization showed that the nanoemulsion particle size was 111.66 ± 2.35 nm for Formula 1 and 134.06 ± 3.31 nm for Formula 2. All physical property evaluations of the nanoemulgel formulations met the requirements for a good gel preparation Keywords: peppermint leaf essential oil, nanoemulgel, physical properties, nanoparticle size
