Abstract

Rising population is an asset, provided, the skills of the workforce are used to the maximum extent. If not appropriately channelized, it can be a liability for a nation. A skilled and hardworking population can emerge as a foundation for a country’s development. This study examines the validity of Malthusian Theory in Nigeria using time series data from 1960 to 2016, employs the ARDL bound test techniques. The result shows that in the long-run, population growth and food production move proportionately, while population growth poses a depleting effect on food production in the short-run, thus validating the incidence of Malthusian impact in Nigerian economy in the short-run. The researcher recommended the government should strategize plans, which will further intensify family planning and birth control measure, compulsory western education and revitalization of the agricultural sector.DOI: 10.150408/sjie.v7i1.6461

Abstract

The primary objective of decentralization is expected to narrow down the regional gap among regions in Indonesia, which is considered as the result of a centralized development. The objective of this research is to identify the flypaper effect of regional expenditures of regency and city governments in Indonesia from 2008 until 2013. Another aim of this study is to provide an empirical evidence that the influence of regional expenditures of regencies and cities in Indonesia from 2009 until 2013 over the regional gap in Eastern and Western provinces of Indonesia. As such, it is necessary to use multiple regression analysis to examine the data. The findings of this study explicate that own-source revenue and general allocation fund significantly affect regional expenditures and a regional gap in the Eastern and Western provinces of Indonesia. Thus, it can be concluded that the dependency level of the regions upon a number of funds transferred from central government is still relatively high. In other words, the flypaper effect occurs in those regions.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v6i1.3293

Abstract

This paper analyzes the change in distance elasticity of trade using bilateral trade data among China and Indonesia and their main trading partners. The empirical method used in this study derived from the gravity model that considers the effect of distance on trade activities behavior. Two causes of change in the elasticity of trade to distance will be exposed, i.e., the distance sensitivity effect (within industries) and the compositional effect (among industries). Specifically, this study would like to prove whether the distance sensitivity effect is more dominant than the compositional effect in explaining the change in distance elasticity of trade. By using four sub-periods and around two hundred industries involved, the result shows that the increase in the role of distance in trade heavily caused by the escalation of distance sensitivity effect in most industries.

This study aims to analyze the determinants of early childhood children aged 3-6 years old who suffer from absolute poverty in Java, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku-Papua using logistic regression. The results showed that the majority of early childhood children in Java deprive in 1 dimension. However, in the other regions, the majority of them are deprived in 2 dimensions. The education level of both the household head and the mother and the residential area had a significant effect on the possibility of an absolute poverty early childhood children in all regions. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of health infrastructure and public socio-economic status on life expectancy in Indonesia. Health infrastructure indicators are health personnel, health facilities, and health insurance. Meanwhile, socio-economics indicators are dependency ratio, income inequality, and poverty. The models are estimated using a panel data set for 34 provinces in Indonesia from 2010 to 2016. This research is using a fixed-effect panel data approach. Empirical results show that health personnel and health insurance have a positive relationship with life expectancy. Dependency ratios and poverty also show a negative relationship with life expectancy. On the other hand, the availability of health facilities and income inequality have a weak relationship with life expectancy. This empirical examination result will help Indonesian governments to improve several aspects in order to increase life expectancy in Indonesia

Abstract

The increase in productivity in the maritime sector will realize the maritime sector as a prime mover. This study aims to analyze the impact of the maritime sector productivity improvement on the performance of the economy. This research simulates increased productivity in the maritime sector (consisting of the fisheries, oil, gas sub-sector and marine transport services sector) using the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) version 8. Simulation analysis showed an increase in productivity in the maritime sector has a positive impact on welfare, real GDP, and trade balance of Indonesia. However, the impact of the increase in productivity is not followed by an increase in output in all sectors. This indicates that if the increase in productivity occurs only in the maritime sector alone without being followed by an increase in productivity in other sectors, the sectoral performance is not optimal.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v5i2.3403
