Abstract

This study is intended to identify and analyze factors that influence the poverty rate in households in West Java. The study was carried out at three regional levels namely the provincial, district and municipal levels in West Java. This study used the model of logistic regression using the data from the national socioeconomic survey (Susenas) on household. The total number of households observed was 20.541 households. The findings indicate that control of total number of household members and asset ownership is the main factor that lowers the poverty rate in households in all regions. However factors that lower the probability of poverty in each district and municipality are varies. Another finding from the study is that financial aid from the community to support family spending is not always significant in lowering the probability of a household to be poor.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v6i2.5096

Abstract

In some developing countries, the instrument to alleviate the poverty is by using the economic growth. So, the increasing in investment, infrastructure development, and macroeconomics stability always be priority from developing countries. In this article explain that economic growth is not the important factor to alleviate the poverty, because equality sometimes is more important rather than the economic growth. In this context, its measure by inequality growth trade off index (IGTI). This method is to measure the influence of economic growth to reducing the inequality, with this method every country can measure which one is better to reducing the poverty whether the economic growth or equality. With this method, Laos in 2000 show that economic growth is more important than equality, but in the same year in Thailand show that equality is more important than economic growth.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v1i1.2592

Abstract

One of the most issues debated in the social capital literature is the unconditional cash transfer effect on social capital, especially regarding the potential of unmeasured targeted mechanisms at the community level about social relations. This article aims to identify the determinant of social capital in the form of household participation in social activities and the impact of unconditional cash transfers (BLT) on participation in social activities in Indonesia by using differences-differences approach (DID). The results showed that the most influential factor on household participation in social activities is the education level of the head of the household and the members of the productive age group. Meanwhile, unconditional cash transfers policy has a positive effect on the rotating saving and credit association. Thus, participation in social activities undertaken by the community undoubtedly has an important element in the success of government programs.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v7i2.7365

Abstract

The income inequality in Indonesia reached the highest level during the decentralization era and suspected to be the cause of the slowdown of the economic growth in the last five years to 2015. This paper investigates whether increasing inequality had a positive or negative impact on economic growth in Indonesia. Using dynamic panel and applying Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimator, the result concluded that there is a significant positive relationship between income inequality and economic growth. However, this study cannot draw a definite conclusion about the association for the different classes (bottom, middle, and top level) since only one-step system GMM is significant. Based on the result, it implies that the government should be more careful in regulating the inequality policy and understand more about the right mechanism of inequality and economy growth.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v7i2.6177

Abstract

This paper aims to provide contemporary and comparative information on mergers and acquisition activities. The findings have shown that Vietnam is very active in mergers and acquisitions activities, for instance in Vietnam 2946 transactions were announced, and 2114 completed in the last decade. Furthermore, Vietnam has a distinctive element of merging local firms; Out of top 20 deals, in 18 transactions target firms and acquirer both were from Vietnam. On the other hand, Sri Lanka has the highest percentage of completed M&A transactions in the last decade compared to Pakistan and Vietnam. In case of Pakistan, the findings suggest that Pakistan has had the highest number of value-based Mergers and Acquisitions deals in comparison to Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Interestingly, even though the number of transactions is higher compared to Sri Lanka and Vietnam; however, mergers and acquisition have had no significant impact on the profitability of Pakistan companies.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v7i1.6074

Abstract

The inverse relationship between the independence of the central bank (CBI) and inflation became a consensus that trusted throughout the world. However, there is no conclusive explanation of why and how central bank independence has succeeded in suppressing inflation. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of financial development and institutional quality on the relationship between central bank independence and inflation. Using 20 Countries of Asia with institutional diversity, this study analyzed through a dynamic panel approach (GMM-Arellano and Bond Estimator). The result indicates that the inverse relationship between central bank independence and inflation depends on the development of the financial sector and also the institutional quality of each country. In other words, to make the central bank's independence work effectively in order to solve bias inflation, the improvement of the financial sector and also the institutional quality is needed.JEL Classification : E580, E310, E020 How to Cite:Kunaedi, A., & Darwanto. Abstract

In 2017, Central Java was the second largest contributor to the GDP in Java but still has poverty and employment problems. In this research, wellbeing can approach with per capita expenditure. Empirically per capita expenditure has spatial relevance. This study aims to determine the relationship between employment indicators and the spending spatially in Central Java. The variables used are expenditure, labor force participation, labor productivity, minimum wage of regency/city, and the average length of the school. The analytical method used to determine the relationship is spatial panel regression with the Spatial Error Model fixed effect. The results obtained are labor force participation, labor productivity, minimum wage of regency/city, and the average length of the school, and spatial error dependencies have a significant positive effect on expenditure. Suggestions proposed are to increase employment through investments, especially in education, and to increase cooperation between regencies/cities in poverty alleviation efforts.JEL Classification: E2, E22, I3, I32, I38, J2, J21, J23.How to Cite:Murti, S.
