Abstract

By contesting the political spectrum versus the economic side of regulation, it is found that the Indonesian cooperative's performance is influenced more by the first approach. As Golkar's electoral vehicle to protect its ruling party's majority vote, the cooperative apex organization (Dekopin) became a parastatal. As a 'bureaucratic capitalist' with state budget support, Dekopin's 'holdup problem' creates the 'subsidy mentality' and increasing corruption perception that stimulated the formation of pseudo-cooperatives. A bottom-up petition to remove Dekopin's parastatal status failed. By calibrating the 2012-2014 panel data, the pseudo-cooperatives decrease when active cooperatives increase. From the 2015 cross-section exercise, pseudo-cooperatives' number rises along with the growing population. External funding to cooperatives is used as a means to spend it on leisure. Many islands show different tendencies of pseudo-cooperatives' creation. In 2016, a government's economic strategy to create healthy cooperatives was started by closing down 32,778 pseudo-cooperatives. This process continued until 2019.JEL Classification: P13, C21, R51, A13How to Cite:Soesilo, N. I. (2020). Government of Indonesia’s Battling Strategy to Cope with Pseudo-Cooperatives. Abstract

At the end of 2019, most countries experienced an economic slowdown due to a trade war between the United States and China. According to macroeconomic theory, aggregate demand is one of the factors that influence economic growth. This study aims to add the debate and fill the gap by studying the relationship between aggregate demand and economic growth in the case of Indonesia. Using an Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag analysis, the results indicate that in the long-run, household consumption and investment had a positive effect on Indonesia's national income in 2010-2019. It means that the government must continue to make policies to maintain the purchasing power of Indonesian consumers, so that public consumption remains high, and maintaining the investment climate to be more conducive. On the other hand, government expenditure and net exports variables have no impact on Indonesia's national income in 2010-2019.JEL Classification: E01, E12, O47How to Cite:Astuti, P. Abstract

This paper investigates whether volatilities in oil prices influence consumer household consumption expenditure from 1995 to 2019, a period described in the literature by the weakening effect of oil price volatility on macroeconomic factors. The Vector autoregressive model's findings suggest that the unexpected changes in oil prices significantly influence household consumption expenditure in Nigeria. A one standard deviation unexpected for a change in oil prices corresponds to a 28.31 percent increase in Nigeria's consumption expenditure. Moreover, the decomposition of the variance did not affect the sign and significance of the household relationship between oil price volatility and consumption expenditure. The paper offers that the extent to which dependence on oil continues depends on the magnitude to which Nigeria's economies can continue developing alternative energy sources and improving energy conservation.JEL classification: D15, Q43 How to Cite:Ogede, J. Abstract

The impact of bank-specific factors on the performance of the deposit money banks in a country has been an area of inquiry for any bank-based financial system. The research investigates the impacts of bank-specific factors on bank performance in Nigeria within 2014-2018. This research use panel data from ten banks that had the best deposit in 2018. The panel data approach found a significant negative relationship between asset quality and return on asset and a significant positive relationship between loan-to-deposit ratio, capital adequacy, and return on asset. In this regard, strategic management should ensure chasing their functional intermediation role and ensure liquidity preference to meet its day-to-day obligations.JEL Classification: G21, G32, C33 How to Cite:Ariyibi, E. Abstract

This paper examined the macroeconomic determinants of under-five mortality rate in Nigeria between 1980 and 2017. The study was predicated on the Grossman analytical framework rooted in the human capital development theory. A macro-econometric model incorporating major macroeconomic variables in explaining under-five mortality health outcomes. ARDL bound test estimation technique that took into consideration error correction mechanism was used. Tests of the model’s reliability were carried out using unit root and co-integration tests. The influences of government health expenditure was significant, however both immunisation initiatives and health workers exerted an insignificant positive influence on under-five mortality rate. Thus, the study recommends policies targeted to improve Nigeria health system both in terms of creation of awareness relating to the service delivery and human capital development of the professionals in the sector to avert brain drain syndrome in the country.JEL Classification: J11, J13 How to Cite:Agbatogun, K. Abstract

This study aims to analyse the determinant of banks’ stability in Indonesia, which is very important to ensure that the country’s banking system could be more effective in supporting transmission of monetary policy and more resilient in facing financial crisis. To achieve the objective, this study collected a comprehensive dataset from 94 banks in Indonesia, covering both conventional and Islamic banks, during September 2015 - June 2019 period. The data is subsequently analysed by employing dynamic panel data model. The results show that the main factors that positively influenced banks’ stability in Indonesia are exchange rate, financial inclusion, asset returns, and credit/financing growth. However, interest rates are found to be negatively influenced the stability. The findings are expected to provide insights for policy makers and market players in ensuring that the banks’ stability could be well maintained in Indonesia. The results are also hoped to enrich literature in economics and banking, particularly in emerging markets like Indonesia.JEL Classification: G21.How to Cite:Kasri, R. A., & Azzahra, C. (2020). Abstract

Several factors have attributed to the high child mortality rate, including poverty, age of women at birth, and length of the interval between births. Besides, the lack of financial resources in developing countries has been a challenge in addressing the prevalent high child mortality rate. Thus, this study seeks to examine the relationship between foreign aid and infant mortality in Nigeria from 1981 to 2018. Employing Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique, the study observed that foreign aid, government expenditure on health, real GDP, and carbon dioxide emission negatively impacted child mortality. Hence, the study concludes that foreign aid reduces child mortality in Nigeria. The study recommends that the government ensure that all foreign aid and grants use immediately to reduce child mortality by building the necessary infrastructure and making it readily available.JEL Classification: F35, I19.How to Cite:Adebanji, F. Abstract

The D-8 organization was established to accelerate the economies of eight developing countries that joined the OIC, but the data showed a decline in the share of the D-8 countries towards the total GDP of developing countries. Thus, this study examines whether there are differences in economic growth between D-8 and non-D-8 countries. The tests were carried out on eight D-8 member countries and eight non-D8 countries. Using panel regression with a fixed-effect model, the study results indicate differences in economic growth between D-8 and non-D-8 member countries. These results indicate that joining D-8 made a significant contribution to its member countries. In addition, all control variables such as political stability, population, export, and human development index show a positive impact on economic growth.JEL Classification: F13, F14, F43How to Cite:Arisman., Al Arif, M. Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review the existing works and literature on halal tourism using bibliometric analysis in an attempt to explore the expanding journey of this concept since its conceptualization. Based on a bibliometric analysis of 77 articles retrieved from the Scopus database from 2004 to Sept 2020, this study employs the following bibliometric techniques such as citation, co-citation, and co-occurrence of author keywords. This study finds the nature and direction of research on halal tourism had been conducted over the past decades. It also finds the most dominant authors, journals, institutions, and countries about the works on halal tourism. However, using a single source of the database could be a limitation of this study that, thus expectedly, additional techniques are needed for future researches. For academicians and practitioners, they could get comprehensive insights on the halal tourism concept from this study, which can reference strategic initiatives to encourage Muslim traveler loyalty and obtain Muslim tourist satisfaction.JEL Classification: M31, Z12, Z30, Z30, Z32How to Cite:Hidayat, S. Abstract

In the face of global oil price instability, which seems to negatively impact the Nigerian economy, this study examined how the Nigerian government and its stakeholders have explored other sectors of her economy, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, enhancing sustainable growth. In achieving this, the study employed a time series data covering 24 years (1995-2018). The variables used in the study were real gross domestic product (RGDP), tourism share of GDP, agriculture share of GDP, and manufacturing share of GDP. The unit root test using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test was conducted to test for stationarity among variables employed. The Autoregressive Distributive Lag Bound Test for Co-integration was also employed, while the ECM was also conducted to check for the speed of adjustment. The study findings revealed that, while the Nigerian government and industry stakeholders have made significant investments in the agriculture sector through the development of improved seedlings and farm infrastructure, there is a need for more investment in the manufacturing and tourism sectors of the nation's economy to boost her gross domestic product.JEL Classification: O13, O14, Q01, Z32How to Cite:Ajudua, E.
