Abstract

The most essential element of English teaching is culture. The cultural content of the language education and learning process supports students to describe the language that exists in that culture. Cultural content is communicated through the textbook as essential in education and learning. So, culture content analysis is critical to selecting, developing, and effectively using the correct textbooks. This research aims to examine the types of cultures represented in textbooks, classify them into source, target, and international cultures (Cortazzi & Jin, 1999), and how the cultures of the classified textbooks are represented. It is to discover aesthetic, social, semantic, and practical senses (Adaskou, Britten & Fahsi, 1990). Researchers used descriptive qualitative methods. This research data is from the English textbook When English Rings for Junior High School. This data is cultural material gathered from all textbook readings, conversations, tasks, and images and converted in frequency. Two results were found in the textbook analysis. First are the results presented in the textbook entitled "When English Rings the Bell," which are source culture, target culture, and international culture. Secondly, the culture of both textbooks was represented primarily by pragmatic sensations compared to aesthetic, semantic, and sociological sensations. Therefore, there was an imbalance between the type of culture presented and how cultures were presented in the textbook.

Abstract

A movie is a type of literary work to entertain and convey a value or message to the viewer. The movie strives to communicate moral values, which are considered positive attitudes that could be adopted by everyone. This study aims to identify and analyze the moral values contained in the one-piece anime movies "Z" and "Stampede”. This study uses a grounded theory approach to the descriptive-qualitative method and analyze the moral values in the movies by using Sulistiyani’s moral theories. This study focuses on analyzing two anime films from the One Piece series, namely Z and Stampede. This research findings shows that numerous morals can drive and teach us as viewers. The morals found in the movies are courage, self-sacrifice, honesty, justice, wisdom, respect and appreciation, hard work, fulfilling promises, supporting others, and working together. Unfortunately, belief in God's values is not found in these movies since the themes of these movies are action, adventure, and, most significantly, friendship. Moreover, the moral values mostly delivered in these movies are helping others. Finally, the researcher suggests that the viewers not only derive enjoyment from the movie's plot but also apply its moral values to enhance their own character to become better individuals.

Individuals interact through two components, namely verbal and nonverbal communication. The two components are inseparable. This article aims to examine the nonverbal cues exhibited by the American character, Jack Mc. Call, portrayed in the film "A Thousand Words". This is a high-quality document. It contains two categories of information. The primary data is obtained from the film's screen captures that emphasize Jack's nonverbal cues. The supporting data encompass additional information that bolsters the examination. The method employed for gathering data involves conducting research at the library and utilizing the subsequent procedures: viewing the film and capturing screenshots of the scenes that pertain to Jack's nonverbal communication. Analyzing data is executed by utilizing the principles of nonverbal communication. Initially, the American way of communication is distinctly dissimilar from the Asian approach, which often involves showing respect by bowing during conversations. Secondly, as Americans speak more attentively, they frequently rely on gestures and facial expressions, as mentioned previously. Jack represents American nonverbal communication.

Abstract

English communication is very important in this era. Students are expected to have proficient English skills. However, in reality, students often use English dictionaries when talking to others. A dictionary is a collection of words that functions as a reference that provides translations of words, meanings, and how to read words. Therefore, this research provide an overview of students who often rely on dictionaries when speaking English with other people. The purpose of this research is to see the presentations of students who rely on dictionaries when talking to other people. That way, it will be easier to conclude whether using a dictionary helps students or makes students dependent and ultimately unable to speak English fluently. The research method used is quantitative. Data were collected by using a survey method. The survey method aims to collect data as appropriate by giving questionnaires to the sample to be studied. To maximize the data collected, the survey that the researchers distributed used a Likert Item scale. The participants consisted of 85 of 5th semester students of the English Education Study Program at The University of Nias. The research results show that students still rely on using dictionaries when speaking English.  The ongoing reliance on dictionaries indeed carries a detrimental effect; hence, it is recommended that dictionaries be employed only when necessary.

Abstract

Film is a kind of social communication that can be made base on the social reality that exists in and around the setting in which it is set. This study aims to examine the moral values in the movie Ayla: The Daughter of War. The content analysis method was employed in this study. Primary and secondary data are the two categories of data used in this study. The key information gleaned straight from the movie Ayla the Daughter of War is known as primary data. secondary data included documents, journals, and other sources of information that could help with the study. This study employs two methods to collect data: documentation procedures and observation approaches. This study used Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to gain a more precise understanding of the symbols and significance of the ethical lesson conveyed in the movie Ayla: The Daughter of War. The finding showed that there are eight moral values—humanity, helping each other, tolerance, brave, responsible, love and affection, human connections to God, and keeping promises—were identified by researchers in this movie. It can be concluded that there are numerous moral lessons and prerequisites for the meaning of the film. This movie shows that despite differences in racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds, empathy, love, and compassion can still exist. Aside from that, this movie also teaches that love and affection can arise from an honest heart regardless of a person's biological link to another person.
