Abstract

The concept and values of wasatiyyah are fundamental in Islamic banking practice as the syariahlaw has delineated basic muamalat principles as an operation guideline for the banking industry. So that, all kind of extreme characteristics may be prevented. The principles of wasatiyyah prohibitany element which overlooks the permitted limit namely gambling, uncertainty (gharar), usury, fraud and so on. These elements have to be avoided in life because they were clearly prohibited byAllah SWT due to their oppressive nature especially towards the unfortunate such as the poor orlow-income group. This prohibition is also attached with the heavy intimidation in the hereafter. The Islamic banking system upholds the concept of wasatiyyah through the values of fairness, trust, transparency and accountability which are instilled through the syariah governance system. The appreciation of these values is proposed to be a part of the new curriculum for the financialawareness subject has been presented by the Malaysia government in the 13th Parliamentarysession. It is important to educate and enhance the understanding of the public especially the youngabout the Islamic banking system as an alternative to avoid the prohibited conventional bankingsystem.

Abstract

This paper explores the change in parents’ motivation for wanting their children to be bilingual.Derived from a larger study done between 2011-2015, the paper portrays how parents who, at thetime of data collection resided in Australia, changed motivation for communicating with theirchildren bilingually. Evolving from my personal experience and supported by data from tworesearch participants with similar experience, the paper presents an explanatory discussion onhow parents changed motivation for raising children bilingually, which is due to the change ingeographic setting.Using auto-ethnographic approach, I discuss the shifts of motivation that implicate especially inthe preferences for relative emphasis on L1 and L2, to correspond to the change in thesociolinguistic set-up due to the different settings a family has moved to. The early reason whyparents want their children to be able to communicate in two languages in the period priorgeographic movement from countries where English is a foreign language has changed after theylive in Australia. Parents had been motivated to make their children bilingual when they are inthe non-English-speaking contexts because they want their children to catch up with theglobalised world communication, while their main reason for having bilingual children after theylive in Australia is to maintain their heritage culture and language. This paper is expected to enhance the discussion in the field of bilingualism, especially aboutparents’ motivation for children bilingualism, which extends the discussion in other research.

Abstract

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Islamic schools known as madrasah havebeen of increasing interest to analysts and to officials involved in formulating U.S. foreign policytoward the Middle East, Central, and Southeast Asia. Madrasah drew added attention when itbecame known that several Taliban leaders and Al-Qaeda members had developed radicalpolitical views at madrasah in Pakistan, some of which allegedly were built and partially financedthrough Saudi Arabian sources. These revelations have led to accusations that madrasah promoteIslamic extremism and militancy, and are a recruiting ground for terrorism. Others maintain thatmost of these religious schools have been blamed unfairly for fostering anti-U.S. sentiments andargue that madrasah play an important role in countries where millions of Muslims live in povertyand the educational infrastructure is in decay. This paper aims to study a misconception of therole and functions of Islamic traditional religious schools which have been linked with theactivities of terrorism. The study will be specifically focus on practice of the traditional Islamicschool, which is locally called as ‘madrasah system’.

Abstract

Researches on the effective leadership reveal that principals in high performing schools aresuccessful in improving schools outcomes through who they are, the strategies they use, as well asthe specific combination and timely implementation and management of these strategies as a resultof the unique contexts in which they work. The present research work tries to explore and confirmthe talent management factors (TMFs) responsible for developing teacher leadership talent (TLT).The proposed TMFs were tested and validated through a sample of 400 teachers of HighPerforming School in Malaysia using Amos 19. Hypotheses were tested at a 95% confidence leveland the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) andComparative Fit Index (CFI) were used to test the structural equation model of talent management. The obtained RMSEA value was 0.049, TLI value was 0.942 and CFI value was 0.962 whichindicated a good model fit and appropriateness. Analysis of the results demonstrated that the levelof implementation of talent management falls into the range of being very good and has asignificant relationship with a teacher leadership talent development of the organization in thestudied population. This study is one of very few studies to provide an integrative perspective ofTMFs for developing TLT in high performing school; it adds to the extremely limited number ofempirical studies that have been conducted to investigate talent management in the educationsector and how teacher leaders start as individual contributors and move up into management andleadership roles.

Abstract

The idea of legally acknowledging and protecting the intellectual property is prevalently known inany legal system in the world, but not many people know how this idea is dealt in Islam. Islam asthe religion of wholeness (syumul), deals with almost all aspects of life and aims at protecting fivemain objectives of syariah3 (maqasid al syariah) namely religion (al din), life (al nafs), intellect(al aqal), lineage (al nasl) as well as property (al mal). As the time goes by, people started torealize that human intelligence and creativity shall not be the object of manipulation, thusnecessitated them to come up with some sort of protection for their invention by legallyacknowledging it as ‘intellectual property’. This paper will try to discuss the position of intellectualproperty in the Islamic jurisprudence by determining its ‘maaliyyah’ (capable of being consideredas property).
