Abstract

To increase students' understanding of mathematical concepts, manipulative teaching aids are needed to support the continuity of the learning process. This research aims to describe the use of polynomial board mathematics teaching aids, as well as determine the level of effectiveness of the polynomial board created during the learning process. The type of research used is R&D (Research and Development) research. This research method is used for product development through needs research and then development is carried out to produce tested products. Research data uses a qualitative approach through direct peer teaching trials together with media expert lecturers in the Department of Mathematics, State University of Malang. Peer teaching carried out by polynomial boards has a high level of effectiveness based on active responses when learning is carried out using models as well as input and suggestions from media expert lecturers after peer teaching activities are carried out. This teaching aid can provide students with a concrete understanding of the concept of polynomial operations, both solving contextual problems and making it easier for teachers to provide explanations regarding the concept of polynomial operations. Researchers provide suggestions, especially that manipulative media in learning is very important with the aim of deepening understanding of concepts and needing to pay attention to aspects of the relevance of the material to the teaching aids used.

Abstract

This research aims to conduct a literature review on students' mathematical understanding ability in solving problems on ratio and scale material at the junior high school level and to understand the importance of mathematical understanding for students in the learning process so that students are able to solve mathematical problems and are able to see the importance of students' mathematical understanding in everyday life. The method used in the research is a literature review of various indexed sources with the source of the study in the form of students' mathematical understanding in mathematics learning. It is necessary to teach ratios to students with a high level of mathematical understanding in addition to forcing them to memorize formulas. Moreover, as a means of promoting good comprehension during the learning process, students receive additional, varied practice questions. In order to further encourage students to improve their mathematical grasp of ratio content, teachers should also play a role in encouraging a type of early appreciation in the development of students' mathematical understanding and by giving them several opportunities to review and fix errors.

Abstract

Abstract

The main goal of learning mathematics is that students have the full range of mathematical skills to pursue higher education and solve problems in everyday life. An approach that can be used is Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). RME is an approach in learning mathematics using situations that contain real experiences or problems. This research aims to define RME, describe the principles and characteristics of RME, and the roles of RME in Indonesia. The method used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR). The result of this study is that the researcher found that RME helps the students to connect mathematics in everyday life so they can improve their mathematical skills as well, and it can help ‘slow learners’ to understand mathematics’ concepts. In addition, RME also can increase students’ affective domain, such as learning independence, self-efficacy, and self-confidence.

Abstract

Most students experience difficulties in understanding mathematical concepts presented by the teacher. This research aims to improve students' conceptual understanding of quadratic functions by implementing a problem-based learning (PBL) model aided by Google Sites. This classroom action research adopts the Kemmis and McTaggart model. The study was conducted in two cycles, with two meetings in each cycle, and the subjects were 36 students of class X-6 at SMA Negeri 1 Sewon. The data collection instruments were learning implementation observation sheets and conceptual understanding test questions. A quantitative descriptive data analysis technique was used with a success criterion of more than 70% of students having a conceptual understanding at least in the high category based on test results. The results showed that the application of the PBL model aided by Google Sites could improve the conceptual understanding abilities of class X-6 students at SMA Negeri 1 Sewon. The greatest improvement in students' mathematical conceptual understanding of quadratic functions between pre-action and cycle I was on the indicator of restating the concept, which was 65.97%. The greatest improvement in students' mathematical conceptual understanding of quadratic functions between cycle I and cycle II was in presenting concepts in various mathematical representation forms, which was 40.28%. In general, the achievement in cycle II was 83.33% of students having a high conceptual understanding ability. This indicates that the student's conceptual understanding in cycle II met the success criteria, which is more than 70% of students having a high conceptual understanding ability.
