FOCUS AND SCOPE Journal of Dialektika is a professional, double-blind peer-reviewed international journal devoted to promoting scholarly knowledge and exchanging academic research and professional findings on all aspects of English such as English literature, second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) learning, including translation studies. To this end, Dialektika publishes theoretical and empirical studies in the form of original research, research reviews, case studies, conceptual frameworks, and innovative educational and social ideas with both regional and global perspectives. Dialektika has a clear preference for manuscripts with a solid theoretical foundation and tangible educational and research implications. We, therefore, invite original submissions from around the world that fit within this aim. Authors are encouraged to submit complete, unpublished, original, and full-length articles that are not under review elsewhere. The online version of the journal is free to access and download.

Abstract

Dan Terhamparlah Darat yang Kuning, Laut yang Biru adalah roman klasik Indonesia yang terbit posthumus pada 1975, setelah pengarangnya wafat, Aoh K. Hadimadja. Cerita di dalam roman ini memperlihatkan potret manusia hibrida yang disuguhkan melalui kisah percintaan. Tokoh utama, yaitu Nardi, mewakili potret tersebut. Roman ini menunjukkan cerminan tertentu antara kebudayaan Barat dan kebudayaan non-Barat (Timur?) sekaligus mengonstruksi sebentuk relasi masyarakat pascakolonial antara Belanda dan Indonesia. Hibriditas yang ditampilkan roman adalah hibriditas yang kembali memaknai ulang identitas manusia modern pada umumnya. Analisis tentang roman ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pembacaan dekat. Dalam artikel ini akan representasi dilema percintaan antarmanusia dewasa yang selalu berkaitan secara kultural dengan masyarakat dan lingkungan, tempat mereka berada dan menjalani kehidupannya.

Abstract

Dewasa ini tema eksklusif soal kedaerahan atau kerap kali disebut lokalitas menjadi arus utama dalam prosa-prosa Indonesia kontemporer. Meskipun demikian, tren ini bukanlah hal baru dan telah sering muncul dalam sastra Indonesia modern tahun 1990an bahkan lebih awal. Naiknya tren ini menstimulasi kita untuk menggali lebih jauh apa visi yang diusung para penulis-penulis muda pasca-Reformasi dalam kaitannya dengan pengarusutamaan tema di atas, dan mempertanyakannya. Dalam tulisan ini, novel teranyar karya Niduparas Erlang, seorang novelis sekaligus esais kelahiran Banten, ditelaah untuk menunjukkan bagaimana tren berkisah soal pelosok ini menampilkan ihwal yang ironis dalam pemaknaan lokalitas. Dalam novel peraih penghargaannya, Niduparas menarasikan dinamika masyarakat adat Mentawai dan sekelumit konflik intrakomunitas maupun antarkomunitas yang terjadi di antara mereka. Meskipun di satu sisi novel Burung Kayu menunjukkan keberpihakan terhadap kelompok etnis yang termarjinalkan oleh agenda politik warisan Orde Baru, di sisi lain siratan-siratan eksotisme, nuansa mistis, dan kiat menunggalkan perwatakan masih menjadi bagian dari komponen yang dikandung novelnya tersebut. Dengan menggunakan metode analisis pembacaan dekat (close-reading), tulisan ini menjelaskan bagaimana siratan-siratan di atas menjadi bagian dari visi si Pengarang. Akan tetapi, kendatipun hal-hal di atas dipersoalkan, tulisan ini juga menggarisbawahi sumbangsih novel Niduparas dalam berteori tentang penggunaan sudut pandang dalam kajian sastra, yang dalam tulisan ini disebut narator berafiliasi.

Abstract

This research is about code mixing. Code-mixing is the alternation between varieties or codes within words, clauses, or phrases. The use of code-mixing usually happens in people who speak more than one language or also called bilingual or multilingual people. The writer did this research in order to find out the code-mixing cases based on code-mixing theory in the study of sociolinguistics. She took a descriptive method that used two ways of collecting the data, firstly tape-recording and then questionnaires. The respondents of this research are Speaking Four students batch 2013 in Faculty of Letters in Universitas Kristen Indonesia. The reasons why they commit code-mixing, the type of codes that they mixed, and the proportion of female to male students committing code-mixing are the results of this study. There are 73 data which consist of codes that were mixed by the students: parts of speech (49), phrases (7), and question forms (17). The most common user of code-mixing is the noun (part of speech) and WH-question (question form).

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul An Analysis of Code-Mixing and Code-Switching In Hitam Putih Talk Show Episode of Para Pemain 99 Cahaya Dilangit Eropa, sebuah analisis tentang campur kode dan alih kode oleh tuan rumah dan tamu dalam percakapan di Hitam Putih Talk Show. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui tipe dari alih kode apa saja yang digunakan pada percakapan ini demikian pula campur kode apa yang muncul. Disamping itu, penulis juga akan menjelaskan alasan melakukan hal tersebut dalam percakapan ini. Data-data yang ditemukan akan dianalisis menurut teori Ralph W Fasold, John J. Gumperz dan Dilkushi Senaratne (2009). Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif. Penulis pada penelitian ini menemukan 95 kasus campur kode, terdiri dari 30 kasus insertions, 45 kasus aliterasi, dan 20 kasus leksikalisasi kongruen. Kemudian ditemukan juga 30 kasus alih kode yang terdiri dari 12 kasus alih kode situasional dan 18 kasus alih kode metaforis. Adapun alas an penggunaannya adalah ketika membicarakan topik tertentu, mengutip orang lain, menunjukkan solidaritas, interjeksi, pengulangan untuk klarifikasi, mengklarifasi ujaran interlokutor, mengekspresikan identitas, memperhalus atau mempertegas sebuah permintaan dan disebabkan kebutuhan bentuk leksikal tertentu.

Abstract

This writing is focused on the commissive speech act in the magazine NOW! Jakarta. The commissive speech act is one of many illocutionary speech acts which essentially involve the speaker committing himself to behave in some required ways, for instance promising and swearing. This study aims to find out and analyze the categories of commissive Speech Act of English Advertisements in Magazine Now! Jakarta. NOW! Jakarta Magazine, editions February and March 2016 will be the data used in this study. The writer analyzes the collected data descriptively by using the theory of Austin. The result shows that there are forms of illocutionary speech acts in every text of an advertisement; it is used to give information and emotional response. There is the commissive function of offering in every utterance and the other commissive function such as persuading, guaranteeing, undertaking, and promising which are found in advertisements of consumers. It is expected that this study may help the students or readers to comprehend the illocutionary act, particularly about the commissive speech act in the advertisement of consumers in the magazine NOW! Jakarta.

Abstract

The existence of one person is an absolute aspect for human beings to acknowledge. It is a portrayal of one's life purpose. Self-existence is not easily obtained, and it requires a long process of self-discovery. One of the ways to find one's identity could be perceived by the journey of love, as experienced by the main character in Sputnik Sweetheart, namely K. Love has an important aspect in determining one's life. The Author, Haruki Murakami, became popular after writing many topics about the search for identity with the touch of Surrealism and Nihilism in his works. This research examines the search for self-existence from the narrator's love experiences, K. It also aims to explain types of love according to Ancient Greece, how Eros collides with Platonic love through the lens of the main character, and the types of love aforementioned connected with the journey of self-discovery. By reading this research, the readers will have comprehensive knowledge about understanding self-discovery through love. The journey of love in one's life could be the purpose of life because love colors life, and it is the principle of self-discovery.

Abstract

The God of Small Things karya Arundhati Roy mengangkat narasi tentang potret masyarakat India pascakemerdekaan. Isu sosial dan permasalahan identitas budaya yang tergambar dari tokoh-tokoh dalam novel terkait erat dengan wacana pascakolonial. Warisan historis dan kodisi sosial masyarakat pascakolonial menjadi jembatan terbentuknya krisis identitas yang dipenuhi dengan ambiguitas. Para tokoh perlu memiliki strategi dalam merespon krisis identitas sehingga memunculkan hibriditas para tokoh dalam novel. Teori hibriditas Homi Bhabha digunakan untuk menganalisa hibriditas tokoh yang terbentuk melalui pengamatan terhadap tokoh-tokoh yang merepresentasikan hibriditas. Hibriditas kemudian digunakan sebagai media negosiasi para tokoh dalam merespon keberadaan “ruang ketiga” yang mereka huni.
