Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the syntactic structure of adverbs of manner found in J.K. Rowling’s novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The primary purpose is to categorize the types of adverbs of manner used and to illustratetheir structural positions within sentences using tree diagram representations. The data source for this qualitativeresearch is the first volume of the Harry Potter series, from which a purposive sample of 150 sentences containing adverbs of manner was extracted. The research method employed is a descriptive-qualitative approach involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Results indicate that adverbs of manner in the novel predominantly function asadjuncts within Verb Phrases (VP). Furthermore, the analysis reveals that most adverbs are formed throughsuffixation (-ly) and occupy various positions, though post-verbal positioning is most frequent. The findings suggest that J.K. Rowling uses descriptive adverbs to enhance the vividness of character actions. These interpretations providepedagogical applications for linguistics students in understanding syntactic hierarchies and the functional role of adverbs innarrative literature, offering a practical model for tree diagram construction in English syntax studies.

Abstract

Morphology is a central field in linguistics that examines the internal structure of words and the processes by which they are formed. A key concept in morphological studies is the morpheme, defined as the smallest meaningful unit of language. This study aims to analyze the types and functions of morphemes found in an academic ecolinguistics text in order to illustrate how morphological processes operate in written discourse. The data for this study were obtained from selected lexical items and sentences taken from a subchapter of Arran Stibbe’s Ecolinguistics. A qualitative descriptive method was employed to identify and classify free morphemes, bound morphemes, derivational morphemes, inflectional morphemes, compound words, and word classes. The analysis was conducted by segmenting words into their morphemic components and examining their grammatical functions within context. The findings indicate that derivational morphemes, particularly those forming abstract nouns and technical terms, occur frequently in the text, reflecting the academic nature of ecolinguistics discourse. Inflectional morphemes mainly serve grammatical functions such as tense and number, while compound words contribute to the expression of interdisciplinary concepts. This study highlights the importance of morpheme analysis in understanding word formation and meaning construction in academic texts, especially in the field of linguistics.

Abstract

This article examines a short digital interaction between an early-career researcher and a senior linguistics lecturer in order to explore how academic legitimacy, politeness, and authorship ethics are negotiated in everyday scholarly communication. Although the interaction takes place in an informal WhatsApp exchange, it reveals that linguistic choices are not merely interpersonal ornaments but also ethical and epistemic strategies within hierarchical academic relations. Using Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory together with COPE and ICMJE authorship principles, this study adopts a micro-analytic autoethnographic approach to examine how lexical mitigation, syntactic softening, and implied meanings work to manage face threats, defer premature authorship claims, and protect intellectual autonomy. The analysis suggests that politeness in this context functions as a practical ethical resource that helps regulate the pace of scholarly claims and maintain integrity in asymmetrical academic relationships.
