Abstract

This research focuses on the shifts in translation of noun phrase found in the text “Creatures behind Houses”. It aims at describing the types of noun phrase and their translation into Indonesia, investigating and explaining the types of translation procedures that applied. The data were obtained from the bilingual text entitled Creatures behind Houses as the source language. The data were collected by applying the observation method which was supported by implementing note-taking technique in order to find, identify and classify the data. The data were analyzed by applying the qualitative descriptive method in which the noun phrases were presented descriptively along with their descriptions and explanations. There are several theories applied in this research, such as the theory of Indonesian grammar by Sneddon (1996) in order to describe the types of noun phrase and their translation and the theory of translation by Catford (1965) to analyze the types of translation procedures applied. The findings show that there are two types of noun phrases and their translation found in the data. They are level shift, and category shifts which consists of structure shift, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. Thus there is no class shifts found in the data.

Abstract

This study analyzed about the types of code mixing found in the Indonesian Translator organization magazine. The study analyzed about the types and levels of code mixing found in the Indonesian magazine. Intra-sentential code mixing is called as the appearance of a phrase, clause, or a sentence boundary in the utterance of someone. This study applied descriptive qualitative method in analyzing data. Indonesian Translation organization magazine is used as the data source in analyzing data. In collecting data, the researcher applied documentation method. This study applied content analysis that focused on analyzing the types of code mixing defined by Hoffman and the levels of code mixing stated by Suwito. Intra sentential code mixing in the form of word and phrase are found in the data source. It can be seen that there were 7 data of intra sentential code mixing in the form of word found in the data source. Moreover, there were 11 data of intra sentential code mixing in the form of phrases that were found in the data source.

Abstract

This research entitled The Analysis of Verbal Ellipsis Found in The Story Book of “The Boyhood of Ronggowarsitoaimed at analyzing and classifying the classification of verbal ellipsis’s types in each text of story book entitled The Boyhood of Ronggowarsito. The primary data was taken from the English textbook ofThe Boyhood of Ronggowarsito(1991).The main theory used in this study was taken from the book entitled Cohesion in English(1975) by M.A.K Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan. They stated that ellipsis is the omission of an item of a sentence on the assumption which an earlier sentence will make the meaning clear. They classify ellipsis into three types: nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis and clausal ellipsis. However, the focus of the research was only on the analysis of verbal ellipsis. The research method used in the research is qualitative research. The required data were classified and analyzed based on the classification of verbal ellipsis. Verbal ellipsis consisted of lexical verbal ellipsis and operator verbal ellipsis. The findings showed that verbal ellipsis consisted of lexical verbal ellipsis and operator verbal ellipsis, where lexical verbal ellipsis is marked by the omission of final element meanwhile, operator verbal ellipsis is marked by the omission of initial element.

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the key aspects in which area the students must improve in the university. One person can communicate to the other in a language when they can understand each other and if they can understand each other it means that they have a very good pronunciation especially for English it is not very easy to pronounce some words for some speaker especially for the Indonesian speaker it is not very easy to pronounce all of the English words because the Indonesian language is very different with the English language. That is why pronunciation is one of the lesson that must be taught in the class because not all of the Indonesian people can pronounce the English words correctly they need more practice do you pronounce the words because the Exxon of the Indonesian people are very strong and they need a lot of practice at home or in the classroom with the teachers to practice work to improve their pronunciation. This is very important especially if they want to communicate with the native speaker especially for the English native speaker and they will not understand what the people say unless we pronounce the word correctly. And to pronounce the word correctly needs a lot of practices not just in the classroom but also practices at home.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Indonesian-English code-switching in social media communication, focusing on patterns, motivations, and sociolinguistic implications. Through analysis of social media posts across multiple platforms, this research identifies common patterns of code-switching and explores how bilingual Indonesian speakers navigate between languages in digital spaces. The findings suggest that code- switching serves various pragmatic and social functions, reflecting both linguistic competence and cultural identity in the modern Indonesian digital landscape. This research investigates Indonesian-English code-switching in social media, emphasizing patterns, motivations, and sociolinguistic implications. By analyzing posts across diverse platforms, it identifies recurring linguistic patterns and uncovers how bilingual Indonesian speakers dynamically alternate between languages in digital contexts. Abstract

This study seeks to explore the use of adverbs of manner in Harper Lee's “To Kill a Mockingbird” in an attempt to understand their role in forming the narrative and stylistic effects of the novel. The data source is the first edition of the novel, Lee, 1960. A chapter purposively sampled from the beginning, middle, and the end of the book was selected for analysis. Identification and subsequent classification of all the adverb manner instances in these chapters by their semantic categories and syntactic positions were carried out. The analysis showed that Lee used many adverbs of manner (N =127), with Adverbs of Degree being the most frequent category followed by a very diverse range of other adverbs. The most frequent position of adverbs of manner was pre-verb. These findings suggest that Lee uses adverbs of manner purposefully to contribute to character development, atmosphere, and the exploration of key themes in the novel. The present study offers an insight into stylistic effects created by the adverbs of manner in the literary text and has implications for language teaching and literary analysis.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of language on interaction and communication within social media platforms. Language, as a primary tool for conveying messages, plays a crucial role in shaping digital identities, building social relationships, and influencing how information is perceived by users. In this context, language not only serves as a medium for communication but also acts as a bridge for culture, social norms, and self-expression. The research identifies various linguistic phenomena that emerge on social media, such as the use of slang, colloquial expressions, code-switching, and their impact on effective communication. The findings suggest that language on social media tends to be more informal, flexible, and adaptive, creating space for the development of new linguistic forms and influencing communication patterns in everyday life. In conclusion, language on social media not only reflects social and cultural evolution but also plays a significant role in shaping the dynamics of digital communication in the modern era.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the syntactic structures and morphological choices in “A Poem with Your Name,” specifically how these language components contribute to the poem’s emotional and artistic impact. The research aims to discover how language develops meaning and provokes emotions in poetry literature by focusing on syntax (sentence patterns) and morphology (word structures). The poem “A Poem with Your Name” provided the basis for this study’s data. The poem was evaluated qualitatively, with an emphasis on syntactic patterns like sentence complexity and inversions, as well as morphological aspects like derivations and compound words. The fundamental methodology consists of attentive reading and linguistic analysis, which are supported by frameworks from Chomsky’s syntactic theory and Jakobson’s poetic function. These results suggest that the way syntax and morphology interact is essential to the poem’s overall effect and offer new perspectives on how linguistic features influence literary meaning. Students and scholars in both linguistics and literature may find this study helpful as it highlights the need of applying linguistic frameworks to literary texts.

Abstract

The digital era, marked by rapid advancements in information and communication technology, has brought significant changes to various aspects of human life, including communication. Social media has become an integral part of teenagers' lives, influencing the way they interact, obtain information, and express themselves. This study aims to analyze the impact of social media on the changes in language use among teenagers. Using a qualitative research method, the study seeks to explore in-depth how social media shapes language use among teenagers. Through social media content analysis and in-depth interviews, the research finds that social media has triggered the emergence of slang, abbreviations, and unique emojis. This language use not only reflects teenagers' social identities but also affects their formal language skills. Additionally, social media influences the way teenagers think and communicate. Exposure to various types of texts and language styles on social media can enrich their vocabulary and improve their language skills. On the other hand, excessive exposure to inaccurate information or harsh language can negatively impact teenagers' critical thinking skills and their ability to evaluate information.

Abstract

This study, entitled An Analysis of Denotative and Connotative Meanings in College Students’ Interaction, aims to explore how college students use and interpret language in terms of its literal (denotative) and implied (connotative) meanings during their daily communication. Language plays a critical role in interpersonal interaction, and understanding how meaning is constructed and conveyed is essential in a college setting where communication occurs across academic, social, and cultural contexts. The research focuses on identifying the types of words and expressions students commonly use, analyzing how these are understood both literally and contextually, and examining the potential for miscommunication caused by differing interpretations of connotative meanings. The data were collected through observation and documentation of natural conversations among English Department students at Bali Dwipa University, followed by a semantic analysis based on theories of meaning. The findings reveal that while students are generally aware of denotative meanings, they frequently rely on connotative meanings to express emotions, attitudes, or social alignment. However, varied personal and cultural backgrounds sometimes lead to misinterpretation, particularly with words or phrases that carry strong emotional or cultural connotations. The study concludes that there are 20 utterances highlighting the rich interplay between denotative and connotative meanings in everyday student communication. While the denotative meanings provide a straightforward, literal understanding of the expressions, it is the connotative meanings that reveal deeper social, emotional, and relational nuances. An increased awareness of both denotative and connotative meanings can improve communication effectiveness and reduce misunderstandings in academic and informal settings.
