Abstract

Used cooking oil is a domestic waste frequently disposed of improperly, causing persistent pollution to water and soil. An aromatherapy candle-making training program based on recycled used cooking oil was conducted in Lestari Jaya Hamlet, Kutai Timur Regency, aiming to optimize waste utilization, reduce environmental contamination risk, and promote the development of creative, eco-friendly businesses within the community. The event engaged 16 participants from the PKK women's group and local residents through material presentations and hands-on practice. The success of the program was evaluated using a Likertscale questionnaire. Results revealed a mean satisfaction score of 4.4, indicating a high level of satisfaction with the training received. Financial analysis showed total monthly production costs of Rp6,569,038.89 for 1,000 candle units, with a selling price set at Rp8,500.00 per unit and a benefit-cost ratio (R/C) of 1.3, reflecting business feasibility and real profit potential. This initiative effectively enhanced environmental awareness, entrepreneurial skills, and motivated the community to manage domestic waste productively. The main recommendation is to replicate this training model in other areas and to integrate digital marketing strategies to foster sustainable development of micro-businesses based on waste materials.

Abstract

The use of gadgets in early childhood is currently increasing along with technological advances. Although gadgets have benefits as a medium for learning and entertainment, excessive use can also have negative impacts on children's physical, social, and emotional development. This community service activity aims to provide information about the dangers of excessive gadget use for children in five Early Childhood Education (PAUD) units, namely PAUD Ananda, PAUD Pelita Hati, PAUD Anggrek Permai, PAUD Cahaya Jabal Rahmah, and PAUD At-Thoyyibah. located in Klandasan Ilir Village, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. The method used was counseling activities through material delivery and interactive discussions with teachers, parents, and students. The results show that teachers' and parents' understanding of the negative effects of excessive gadget use increased after the outreach activities. This socialization program is effective in increasing awareness and the active role of parents and teachers in preventing the negative impacts of gadgets that can hinder the growth and development of early childhood. Parents need to limit and supervise their children's gadget use with appropriate time and content regulations, as well as encourage physical and social activities, supported by ongoing collaboration between cadres, PAUD educators, and the sub-district.

Abstract

The periodic use of chemical-based pesticides in large quantities in agricultural practices can have adverse effects on the environment, human health, and ecosystem sustainability. Therefore, environmentally friendly and applicable alternatives are needed, one of which is the use of plant-based pesticides such as papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.), which are rich in bioactive compounds including papain, saponins, flavonoids, and alkaloids. This community service activity provided education on the preparation of plant-based pesticides from papaya leaves and was conducted in Baru Ilir Subdistrict, West Balikpapan. The aim of the activity was to improve farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness regarding the importance of sustainable pest management. The method employed was conceptual education through counseling sessions. The results showed that participants gained new understanding (soft skills) regarding the benefits of botanical pesticides, along with improved practical skills (hard skills) in preparing pesticide solutions from papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.). In addition, participants expressed an interest in reducing their dependence on chemical pesticides and began applying botanical pesticides to their crops. This activity is expected to serve as an initial step toward the implementation of environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture in Baru Ilir Subdistrict, West Balikpapan.

Abstract

The implementation of the Rocket Stove program in Santan Tengah Village, Marangkayu Subdistrict, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, has demonstrated its potential in addressing waste management issues, particularly organic waste, especially household waste, which is traditionally managed through open burning. This technology has the potential to be integrated into an integrated waste management system that encompasses the aspects of reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R), while also providing economic value through the utilization of the heat energy generated for the daily needs of the community. The initiative began with activities to identify community issues and needs, program planning, material and tool planning, and the construction of the rocket stove itself. Through outreach and direct demonstrations, the community demonstrated high enthusiasm for this technology, which is expected to transform waste management practices into healthier, more efficient, and sustainable ones. Success criteria are defined as: The rocket stove operates stably and safely, a reduction in dry waste volume at the testing site, positive acceptance from village officials and surrounding residents, and the establishment of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and a sustainable management plan.

Abstract

The “Love Your Country from an Early Age!” program was implemented at SMPN 2 Kota Bangun as a strategic effort to strengthen students’ national awareness in the face of globalization, which often threatens national identity. This community service activity targeted ninth-grade students and student council members, aiming to instill fundamental national values through interactive learning approaches. The methods applied included thematic lectures supported by multimedia presentations, small group discussions, and educational quizzes designed to foster active participation and collaborative learning. Evaluation was conducted using pre-tests, post-tests, and direct observation of student engagement throughout the program. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ understanding of national values. The average pre-test score of 62.5 increased to 84.3 in the post-test, with more than 80% of participants correctly answering basic questions related to Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). In addition to cognitive gains, students exhibited positive attitudes such as enthusiasm, collaboration, and the ability to connect the material with everyday practices, including respecting diversity and maintaining the school environment. These findings confirm that interactive learning is an effective approach to instilling national values and fostering concrete expressions of patriotism among junior high school students. The program provides a practical model for character education that can be replicated in other schools, thereby contributing to the preservation of Indonesia’s national identity and values in the era of globalization.

Abstract

Muara Jawa Ulu Village is one of the villages in Muara  Jawa District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan. This village is characterized by residential areas, agricultural land, and some plantation areas or community businesses. Its location in the lowlands offers considerable potential for natural resources but also causes environmental problems, such as waterlogging and the accumulation of organic waste. To address these problems, Mulawarman University Community Service (KKN) students implemented a program to create Biopore Infiltration Holes (LRB) in the Delta Mahakam Forest Farmers Group (KTH) Office. This program aims to increase water absorption into the soil, process organic waste into useful compost, and raise public awareness of the importance of sustainable environmental conservation. This activity was carried out through several stages: coordination, socialization, drilling vertical holes to a depth of ± 100 cm, filling with organic waste such as dry leaves and kitchen scraps, and providing education and mentoring to KTH members. The results of the implemented activities demonstrate that biopore holes are highly effective in reducing waterlogging during rainstorms. By utilizing organic waste to create natural compost, they can improve the cleanliness and aesthetics of the environment around the office. The educational impact is also evident in the increased public understanding of the importance of environmentally friendly technology. Furthermore, KTH members expressed interest in replicating this technology independently in their homes and on their land. This program demonstrates that simple, inexpensive technologies like biopore holes can be a real solution to local environmental challenges and directly improve the community's quality of life.

Abstract

The declining use of the Paser Adang language among younger generations indicates an increasing risk of local language endangerment, while limited mastery of basic English among elementary school students remains a challenge in responding to globalization. These issues underscore the need for a community service model that integrates local language preservation with early foreign language instruction. This program was implemented at SDN 008 Long Gelang using a participatory approach. Learning activities were designed to be interactive and culturally contextualized through educational games, songs, folk tales, and group-based tasks that linked local culture with basic English learning. The participants were elementary school students who actively engaged in all stages of the program. The results show increased student interest, participation, and ability to use the Paser Adang language in simple communicative contexts, with an achievement rate of 65,00%. Improvements were also observed in basic English vocabulary and expressions, with 35.71% of students demonstrating fluent use of basic English. The participatory approach effectively promoted active engagement and created a meaningful and enjoyable learning environment. This program offers a practical community service model that integrates local language preservation and foreign language learning simultaneously. Collaboration among schools, local communities, and higher education institutions is essential for ensuring program sustainability while strengthening local cultural identity and developing global competence.
