Abstract

On June 1, 1945, in the session of the Invistigating Body for the Preparation for Indonesian Independence, Soekarno, representing the Religiously Neutral Nationalists, proposed Pancasila as the basis of the Indonesian State. On the other hand, the Muslim Nationalists advocated Islam for the purpose. After long debates, the two factions achieved a political compromise and agreed the use of Pancasila as the basis of the state. Following the 1955 general election, a new constitution was drafted and the issue of the basis of the state was debated again. The Muslim Nationalists and the Religiously Neutral Nationalists did not achieve a political compromise. Due to this political deadlock, President Soekarno on July 5, 1959 issued a decree proclaiming a return to the 1945 Constitution. Since that time, Pancasila has been permanently used as the basis of the state up to the present. Not only do the Muslims accept Pancasila, but also defend it.

Abstract

Maqasid al-Syariah is a potent tool to understand Syariah -- the Devine path leading to the welfare of humanity in a comprehensive way -- in a rational, purpose-oriented, and humanistic way. However, due to some historical factors like fossilization of the Islamic jurisprudence into various schools (mazahib) and the closure of the gate of ijtihad, etc. the maqasid remained a somewhat neglected theme in Islamic legal theory.

Abstract

Islam is a world phenomenon. Since 1979, world—especially the West—had never missed the chance to continually keep an eye on countries with Islamic background. It is especially those which were related to the development of Islamic politics—commonly labeled as Islamist or Islamism (see Hamid, 2016; 2015). The 911 bombing in United States had made the West became a lot more aware. Arab Spring, which started in 2011, and the emergence of ISIS have nurtured the West’s interest on Islamic movement. The East had also started to learnt, with much lower intensity. Religion can no longer be marginalized in political realm, as by far shown in secularized and modernized world’s project. Religion – along with ideology and identity – becomes a significant variable in analyzing and formulating a policy. Religion matters. In the past, three aforementioned factors were mostly seen as merely dependent “epiphenomenal” factor, an effect of other materialized factors. In the Middle East, especially, Danahar (2014:3) satirically says that “Religion, not nationalism or Arabism, is now the dominant force.” He also convincingly adds that “God has returned to the Middle East.” In addition, (God) plans to stay for some time. Islam, at present, simply put, is long lasting.

Abstract

Modernization in the Muslim world has often been linked with the presence of European colonialism, which gained its strength from new forms of military and economic power. European colonial powers brought about an unprecedented disruption in the Muslim world, pushing it outside the hegemonic power. Muslim powers played insignificant or peripheral role in the world contestation of power; the “Islamic world” weakened and became “Islam in the world”. The modern West determined new concepts of humanity, history, society, and political legitimacy alien in the history of Islamic tradition. In this context, Muslims had to choose between two contrasting options, either to partake in the path of hegemonic modernity or to be isolated outside this dominant track.

Abstract

The polemic around the concept of Christian deity can be diluted by efforts to develop an orthopraxis (Christo-Praxis) embracing more the diversity of divinity understanding in Christianity and Islam. One of such efforts is Mahmoud Mustafa Ayoub’s, who approached the depiction of Jesus from His humanity aspect. Ayoub's effort is a legitimate Christology from the Islamic perspective. What Ayoub has been done spurs the reinterpretation of tradition among Christians by develop a mediating paradigm to seek common ground with the Islamic theology. Both Christianity and Islam emphasize monotheism by orthodoxy and orthopraxis. Orthodoxically, it means "let God be God", and orthopraxically it is monotheism is connected with anthropology. Islam realizes efforts towards social justice, and Christian realizes the coming of the Kingdom of God. Here the image of Jesus Christ walking down the path of misery, the cross of Jesus, has represented God's identification with the suffering of the world, as well as an appreciation of spirituality, the spirituality centered on creation, that which means a cosmic Trinitarian spirituality for Christian, requiring justice and peace, truth and love, and the brotherhood of all people and all creations.

Abstract

With the demise of the New Order Regime in 1998, many groups of Indonesian Muslims have attained their freedom of expressions. This resulted in the flourishment of Islamic expressions in various spheres of life: economic, social, political and cultural. Within this new trend, some Muslim groups seek to establish a new historical narrative which emphasises Islam and Islamic connections to Indonesian historiography. As the result, in recent years, Indonesians have adopted a strong attachment toward Islamic historical figures whom supposedly represent the accomplishment of Islamic civilisations, such as the Ottoman sultans. While this strong attachment toward the Ottoman sultans might initally be part on efforts to build a new historical narrative for Indonesian Muslims, it found its ways of expressions not only in historical books but also in religious sermons and in cultural venues such as books and movies. This article argues that the widespread attachment in cultural products promoting the Ottoman historical figures is a method of constructing a social reality of a perfect Islamic leadership in Indonesia.
