Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate women’s perceptions of the main reasons behind their exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) in Egypt. An online survey was conducted with a random sample of 277 respondents from Cairo and in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 women who have been subjected to IPV in addition to observation to their living conditions. According to the conversations with the interviewees, the prevalence of IPV can be explained as a means of discharge from their structural conditions and stress factors. Around 79% of the respondents relate IPV with poverty, 65% relate it with lack of economic resources, and 90% believe that education is a triggering factor for it. Only 14% are decisive in associating IPV with a certain social class.  The research finds that adverse structural conditions in poor communities such as poor housing, lack of water delivery, lack of education, lack of stable income and the lack of any social or economic opportunities explains the high rate of IPV among poor people. Men’s image of themselves and their manhood is severely threatened. Such a psychological status translates into feelings of depression, anxiety, frustration, anger, and fury leading to IPV. While IPV may be pervasive, is not inevitable. Both government and civil society have a key role in reducing the risk factors and addressing the reasons behind violence against women.

Abstract

This research examines the representation of women's sexuality on social media, with a special focus on Indonesian cultural and religious affects. Traditionally, Indonesian women's sexuality has been strongly shaped by social norms that emphasize sexual purity and modesty. But social media has turned into a double-edged sword, allowing people to express themselves while also fostering objectification and. This study uses descriptive qualitative and Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis to examine the sexual objectification of Pamela Safitri, as woman, at the "Talkpod" show. The data came from the conversation between Pamela Safitri and two male hosts. By analyzing interactions between the hosts and Pamela, the study points out the way humour and conversation form and frequently objectify women's sexuality in digital media, especially the reality show that invites women as guest stars. The results of this study explain that sexual objectification of women often uses jokes related to the body both explicitly and implicitly. The findings show that, although social media might empower women, The media is still biased in the discussion of women, especially the sexual objectification of women's bodies through words, sentences, or discourses.

Abstract

Nadia Hashimi's novel, One Half from The East, serves as a lens to explore the pervasive issue of gender inequality in a patriarchal society. This study analyzes the depiction of women, who are consistently viewed as inferior to men and denied fundamental rights. Employing qualitative research methods and Bell Hooks' feminist theory, the analysis exposes the limitations placed upon women within this social structure. The research highlights how Afghan women, like Obayda and Rahima who resort to disguising themselves as men, face oppression and discrimination from birth. Their restricted access to education, healthcare, and even control over their own bodies exemplifies the profound impact of patriarchy on their lives. The findings of this study suggest that gender inequality is deeply ingrained in patriarchal societies and continues to limit the rights and freedoms of women. This study underscores the ongoing struggle for women's equality not just in Afghanistan, but across the globe. In conclusion, this novel became an evident that the fight for women's equality is far from over, and efforts must be made to challenge and dismantle patriarchal structures not just in Afghanistan, but worldwide.

Abstract

As a cultural product of one of the world’s most influential media corporations, the film represents a significant departure from the Eurocentric depictions traditionally associated with Disney princesses. This research aims to identify inclusion and diversity in representing multiculturalism in the movie adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s work “The Little Mermaid”. This study employs descriptive qualitative research to explore and analyze the representation of diversity and multiculturalism in the film adaptation of “The Little Mermaid 2023.” Descriptive qualitative research is chosen for its ability to provide detailed descriptions and interpretations of cultural representations while using semiotic theory and film adaptation theory. The result shows that there are differences through the narrative element in both works, especially plot, settings, theme, character, and writing style. Through a semiotic lens, this inclusion of diversity can be seen from the casting of the characters namely, Ariel, Ariel’s sisters, and The Queen. By utilizing the original text and adapting it to a live-action movie, Marshall has contributed to the discussion of multiculturalism to represent the lack of inclusion in diversity and representation derived from the original text through his decision to cast actors and actresses of diverse races while still maintaining the elements of the original text. Its representation of diversity has the potential to challenge entrenched stereotypes and inspire a new generation of media consumers to demand more inclusive storytelling. This research underscores the importance of critically examining how iconic narratives are adapted to address issues of representation.

Abstract

The study focuses on two PSI's political posters. It aims to analyze some political posters made for the campaign of the election. The posters were chosen randomly. The visual devices are analyzed using Kress and van Leeuwen’s model. A political discourse approach by van Leeuwen is adopted to identify the main discourse strategies to persuade people, especially young people, to vote in a specific way. The result shows that the posters use visual and linguistic strategies to convey a political discourse and to persuade the young audience to vote—the background of the posters, colors, body language, and facial expressions. The written text used in the poster is also effectively structured to represent the party’s ideologies and the candidate.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of androgyny and its contribution to a non-traditional family structure in the film Hidden Figures, focusing on the African-American couple, the Jacksons. Traditional gender roles, often reinforced by media representations, contribute to societal expectations and limitations placed on individuals within families. However, evolving societal norms challenge these traditional depictions, creating a need for exploring alternative family structures and gender expressions in media. This research addresses this gap by analyzing how the film Hidden Figures presents a nuanced depiction of an African-American family navigating gender roles in the mid-20th century. Utilizing the film theory of David Bordwell and Kristina Thompson, coupled with Betty Friedan's liberal feminist theory, this qualitative study employs descriptive analysis to uncover how androgyny manifests in the characters of Mary and Levi Jackson. The findings reveal that both characters successfully maintain their feminine and masculine characteristics in both domestic and public spheres, fostering a shared responsibility in housework, childcare, and income generation. This shared responsibility allows Mary to pursue a fulfilling career while Levi breaks free from the traditional "breadwinner" stereotype. The Jacksons' dynamic exemplifies a gender role revolution, demonstrating how shared support and equality can create a harmonious family structure free from gender role polarization. This study contributes to a broader understanding of evolving family dynamics and the potential for media representations to challenge traditional gender norms. The implications extend to discussions surrounding gender equality, family structures, and the portrayal of African-American families in film.

Abstract

This research aims to explain and describe the eco-lexicon that exists in one of the “Reach for a Greener Tomorrow” campaign posts in @sayapilihbumi Instagram posts that contain eco-lexicon and have issues related to the environment. The theory used in this research is Greening the media (Maxwell et al., 2013) which states that Greening media is a study that begins by acknowledging a historic responsibility to face the challenge of the ecological crisis as a fundamental challenge to critical scholarship in the field and uses an ecolinguistics perspective approach, in the form of analyzing ideological, sociological and biological meaning in eco-lexicons in @sayapilihbumi posts. The   method   used   in   data   collection   is   documentation   and   observation   on   the @sayapilihbumi Instagram account. The result of this research indicates that the eco-lexicons serve not only as a means of communication but also as tools for fostering environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable practices among followers. The findings suggest that social media campaigns can effectively influence public perceptions and behaviors regarding environmental issues, thereby contributing to a broader movement towards sustainability. This study underscores the importance of language in shaping ecological consciousness and advocates for the continued use of social media as a platform for environmental advocacy. By understanding the meanings behind eco-lexicons, stakeholders can better design campaigns that resonate with audiences and promote actionable change.

Abstract

This research reveals the discrimination discourse surrounding the Indonesian court's treatment of environmental activists, specifically focusing on the case of Daniel Frits, who was jailed for exposing illegal shrimp farms in Karimunjawa. The primary objective of this study is to reveal how the media, particularly Mongabay.com, represents the court's actions and the implications of this representation for environmental activism in Indonesia. Using a critical descriptive method and qualitative data, the research analyzes the language and source selection in the article titled "Indonesian Court Jails Environmentalist for Flagging Illegal Farms in Marine Park," published on April 4, 2024. Moreover, Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis uses as approach in this research. The findings indicate that the language used in the article portrays the Indonesian court negatively, suggesting a bias against activists who challenge illegal environmental practices. The analysis reveals that the court's actions are framed as unjust, contributing to a broader narrative that criminalizes environmental advocacy. This representation not only affects public perception of the legal system but also undermines trust in judicial processes related to environmental protection. The implications of this research highlight the significant role of media discourse in shaping public understanding of environmental issues and the legal challenges faced by activists. This study emphasizes the need for greater awareness and support for activists working to protect Indonesia's natural resources.

Abstract

This research examines the impact of the Korean Wave (K-Pop) on the lifestyle of Indonesian students, with a focus on the aspects of music, drama, and Korean pop culture trends from some existing research. South Korea, through its wave, has created a cultural phenomenon that not only encompasses entertainment but also influences various aspects of student life. The study identifies that the influence of K-Pop extends beyond music, penetrating into students' clothing styles, daily language usage, and even consumptive behavior. Students, as an active group following the developments in Korean pop culture, experience significant impacts on their lifestyle. The growth of Korean culture in Indonesia creates a distinctive identity and lifestyle among students, reflected in clothing patterns, hairstyles, and daily language inspired by Korean culture. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to gain in-depth understanding of how K-Pop influences students' lifestyles. By integrating findings from various previous studies, this research examines positive impacts such as increased knowledge and expanded social circles, while also noting negative effects such as consumerism and changes in student behavior. The importance of increasing students' self-awareness and self-control regarding cultural influences, promoting local culture by educational institutions, instilling consumer education, and raising awareness of the role of social media in shaping students' perceptions of lifestyle is emphasized. Thus, it is hoped that students can wisely utilize cultural influences while maintaining their local cultural identity.
