Abstract

The marriage is scary phenomenon has recently emerged as a widely discussed issue, particularly among Generation Z who are entering the age of marriage. This anxiety is fueled by the increasing media coverage of various household problems, including infidelity, child neglect, and domestic violence (DV). This trend is further reflected in the declining marriage rate recorded in 2024. This study employs a qualitative method with documentation-based data collection and applies the qirā’ah mubādalah framework developed by Faqihuddin Abdul Qodir. A relevant related work is the study by Savira Manzilina and Ahmad Zaidinil Kamil titled “The Qur’an’s Perspective in Responding to Marriage is Scary: An Audiovisual Tafsir Analysis of Ustaz Rifky Ja’far on the YouTube Channel ‘Sayap Dakwah TV’.” Although both studies examine the marriage is scary issue, they differ in terms of analytical perspectives and methodological approaches. The findings of this research indicate that when Qur’anic verses are interpreted through the mubādalah approach, new insights emerge regarding marital relationships. This perspective offers significant contributions in addressing fear and perceived injustice often experienced by one party within a marriage. In responding to the marriage is scary phenomenon, qirā’ah mubādalah emphasizes five foundational principles of household life: commitment to a firm covenant, mutual complementarity, benevolent treatment between spouses, consultation in decision-making, and the provision of security and comfort for one another.   Keywords: Marriage is Scary, Qirā'ah Mubādalah, Generation Z, Wedding

Abstract

This article examines the semantic meanings of three Qur’anic terms related to the concept of paradise -Jannah, Hadāʾiq, and Raudhah- by using Geoffrey Leech’s semantic framework. The study aims to identify the root words, basic meanings, and contextual usage of these terms in Qur’anic verses, while applying Leech’s semantic principles to clarify their semantic distinctions. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a structural semantic approach, this research analyzes how each term contributes to the Qur’anic construction of paradise. The findings indicate that Jannah is the most frequently used term and primarily denotes an eschatological and eternal paradise. In contrast, Hadāʾiq is predominantly employed in a worldly context to describe lush and well-cultivated gardens, while Raudhah carries a more symbolic and spiritual nuance, particularly as it is further elaborated in the Hadith tradition. These variations suggest that the Qur’an presents the concept of paradise through a layered and contextual semantic network rather than a single, uniform meaning. This study highlights the importance of semantic and linguistic approaches in preventing reductive interpretations of Qur’anic terminology and in fostering more critical and reflective engagement with the Qur’anic text. Abstract

The Qur’an possesses a distinctive linguistic structure, making it not always easy to understand. Some expressions may be misunderstood, such as the word ḍallan in QS. Aḍ-Ḍuḥā [93]:7, which literally means one who is astray and appears to conflict with the concept of prophetic infallibility. This study identifies two research questions: first, how the meaning of ḍallan can be analyzed through Roland Barthes’ semiotics so that it aligns with the concept of the Prophet’s infallibility; and second, how the underlying ideology and message can be uncovered. This research employs a qualitative library-study method, drawing on works related to Roland Barthes’ semiotics, literature on the literal meaning of ḍallan, as well as tafsīr bil ma’sūr and bir-ra’y relevant to QS. Aḍ-Ḍuḥā [93]:7. The study concludes that Barthes’ semiotics allows the meaning of ḍallan to remain consistent with the concept of prophetic infallibility. At the connotative level, ḍallan refers to the Prophet’s state of uncertainty prior to receiving the truth, functioning as a preparatory phase for revelation rather than an indication of misguidance. This interpretation reveals the ideology that humans cannot navigate life without divine guidance and authority, and conveys the message of the importance of trusting in God’s help and guidance when facing difficulties. Abstract

In the Qur'an, women actually have the same status as men. Generally, in Muslim society, women are considered to have a status one level below men. This arises partly from the construction of classical interpretations that are gender-biased and patriarchal, so that these interpretations often result in women being unable to participate in the public sphere. Therefore, women are often marginalized by men, women's rights and freedoms are bound by men. In contrast to classical interpretation methods, the development of modern interpretations has given rise to contextual interpretations using the hermeneutic method in interpreting women within the framework of the Qur'an. The results of this study show that the Qur'an upholds the values of justice and honesty, including in the context of gender relations, emphasizing that justice does not mean absolute equality, but rather treatment that is appropriate to the needs and responsibilities of each. Based on the various references to women, women and men are actually equal. Women can also be like men, they can also be in the public sphere. Therefore, today women can also play a role, whether in politics, government, and other positions. Keywords: The Qur’an, Women, Gender
