Abstract

This study examines the dialectic between Islam and local culture in Indonesia through Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory to explain how the interaction between religion and tradition produces a contextual form of religiosity. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, this research explores ethnographic texts, Islamic documents, and local cultural practices such as kenduri, Haji Bawakareng, baayun maulid, barapen, and the Minangkabau philosophy of Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah. The data were interpreted to identify forms of social, symbolic, and cultural mediation in the internalization of Islamic values. The findings show that Islam Nusantara represents an active dialectical process that creates a communal zone of proximal development where religion and culture interact productively in shaping social consciousness. Theoretically, the study extends Vygotsky’s framework by demonstrating that symbolic mediation functions not only in individual cognition but also in collective religious construction. The results affirm Islam Nusantara as a reflective and moderate model of Islam that adapts to modernity, engages with cultural plurality, and strengthens social cohesion within Indonesian society.

Abstract

Widespread nepotism within student organizations, particularly PMII, has become a serious ethical and structural challenge, threatening the principles of meritocracy and internal justice. This phenomenon has become increasingly prominent as it has been critically highlighted through digital platforms that demand a theological-normative response and transformative solutions. Therefore, this study aims to integrate a thematic interpretation of the principles of justice in the Qur’ān with an analysis of the framing patterns of the issue of nepotism by a specific digital account; @a.nande_, to formulate an adaptive socio-meritocratic resolution. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research framework, applying inductive Waṣfī ‘Āshūr Maqāṣid analysis to complement the ‘framing solution’ of anti-nepotism values (ḥifẓ al-kifāyah), as well as Robert M. Entman’s framing model analysis to dissect the construction of public opinion. The results of the study show that the discourse on nepotism in PMII is strongly framed in the digital space by emphasizing Diagnosis Causes and Moral Evaluation, which is normatively contrary to the distributive justice of the Qur’ān. This study concludes that resolving the problem of nepotism requires strengthening a transparent meritocracy system and utilizing social media as an instrument of moral policing and a catalyst for organizational reform.

Abstract

This article examines the distinction between revelation (waḥy), divine speech (kalām ilāhī), and risālah in the perspective of Manna al-Qattan, highlighting the problem of fragmented readings in Qur’anic studies. The separation of these three concepts often produces epistemological bias, leading to the reduction of the Qur’an’s authority. This study aims to reconstruct the structural relationship between revelation as a communicative mechanism, divine speech as the substance of truth, and risālah as its social manifestation within an integrated framework. This research employs a library-based method with a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on classical and contemporary sources, with particular focus on Mabāḥith fī ‘Ulūm al-Qur’ān. The findings reveal that al-Qattan bridges revelation and divine speech through the concept of tanzīl, understood as the process by which transcendent divine speech becomes communicative revelation. The study argues that revelation, divine speech, and risālah form an inseparable system that cannot be adequately understood in isolation. Accordingly, the Qur’an is positioned as the concrete manifestation of divine speech with supreme authority. The contribution of this research lies in reconstructing an integrative conceptual framework within Qur’anic studies while challenging the prevailing fragmentary approaches that obscure the fundamental relationship between these key concepts.

Abstract

Self-confidence is a crucial psychological factor for teachers and parents in fulfilling their educational and caregiving roles. Although prayer is generally believed to foster inner calmness and strength, empirical evidence regarding its relationship with self-confidence remains limited, particularly in the Indonesian context. This exploratory quantitative study aims to examine the relationship and statistical contribution of prayer intensity to self-confidence. Using a survey design with snowball sampling, data were collected from 30 respondents via a 1–5 Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using simple linear regression. The results indicate a positive but weak correlation between prayer intensity and self-confidence (R = 0.272). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.074) indicates that prayer explains only 7.4% of the variance in self-confidence, while the remaining 92.6% is attributable to external variables. The regression coefficient of 0.181 suggests a positive direction, yet it does not reach statistical significance (p = 0.146). These findings challenge the assumption of a direct causal link between spiritual practice and psychological well-being, while affirming that prayer may serve as a preliminary predictor requiring broader validation. This study addresses a gap in the literature by providing critical preliminary empirical data for the development of large-scale research on the psychology of religion in the future.

Abstract

Modern psychotherapy, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), has proven effective in clinical practice but remains limited in integrating spiritual dimensions, creating the need for a more holistic approach relevant to Muslim societies. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of Abu Zayd al-Balkhi’s cognitive psychotherapy concepts and Aaron Beck’s CBT, and to explore the potential integration of both within modern psychotherapy. The research employs a qualitative comparative literature study, examining Al-Balkhi’s classical works and Beck’s foundational CBT literature. The study finds that both emphasize the role of cognition in shaping emotions and behavior, yet differ in orientation: Beck focuses on clinical effectiveness, while Al-Balkhi highlights the balance of soul and body and closeness to God. These differences open the possibility of integration, resulting in the model of Islamic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) as the key finding of this research—an evidence-based therapy that is also spiritually meaningful. The contribution of this study is twofold: theoretically, it enriches Islamic psychology by integrating it with CBT; and practically, it offers an applicable model for Muslim communities to address the complexities of contemporary mental health.
QUR’ANIC SELF-CARE AS AN EFFORT TO OVERCOME BURNOUT: A Study of Hamka’s Tafsir Al-Azhar using the PERMA Approach: SELF-CARE QUR’ANI SEBAGAI UPAYA MENGATASI BURNOUT: Studi Tafsir Al-Azhar Karya Hamka dengan Pendekatan PERMA Nuha, Ulin; Tassela, Ghina; Binti Mohd Adnan, Nur Syakirah

Abstract

Burnout has emerged as a significant psychological phenomenon in modern life, driven by prolonged work pressure and an imbalance between professional demands and personal needs. This condition calls for an approach that is not only psychological but also spiritual. This article aims to examine the concept of Qur’anic self-care in Tafsir al-Azhar by Hamka and to analyze its relevance to the PERMA model of psychological well-being developed by Martin Seligman. This study employs a library research method with a thematic (maudhu‘i) exegesis approach, using Tafsir al-Azhar as the primary source and relevant scholarly literature as secondary sources. Data are analyzed descriptively and analytically through the integration of Qur’anic interpretation and psychological perspectives. The findings indicate that Hamka’s interpretation of self-care-related verses reflects an integral framework encompassing spiritual, emotional, social, and physical dimensions. Values such as brotherhood (ukhuwah), life balance, self-regulation, and trust in divine ease amid hardship function as adaptive mechanisms in coping with burnout. These findings demonstrate a strong alignment with the five elements of PERMA: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. However, notable ontological and epistemological differences remain. PERMA is oriented toward well-being as an ultimate goal grounded in empirical research, whereas in Hamka’s perspective, well-being is a by-product of servitude (‘ubudiyyah) to God, rooted in revelation. This study contributes to the formulation of an integrative Qur’anic self-care model and offers an epistemological bridge between Islamic thought and positive psychology in addressing burnout.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the strengthening of Islamic exclusivism in Indonesia which is not only derived from theological differences, but also from power relations in postcolonial societies. Certain groups are often positioned as subalterns, namely those who are marginalized in the dominant discourse. This study aims to analyze the construction of Islamic exclusivism through hegemonic relations and the position of the Indonesian Islamic Da'wah Institute (LDII) and the Tarbiyah network of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) in religious and political discourse. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with five informants, literature studies, and analysis of post-reform religious-political discourse. The analysis was conducted from a postcolonial perspective and using subaltern concepts to identify patterns of dominance and resistance. The results of the study show that Islamic exclusivism is a construction of hegemonic power relations. LDII is marginalized through the stigma of being a deviant group, while PKS, although electorally strong, still experiences marginalization in the socio-cultural realm due to the label of political Islam. Both negotiated identities to gain legitimacy. These findings provide a new understanding that the phenomenon of exclusivism is not only rooted in theological issues, but is also a result of social and political constructions that place certain groups in a subaltern position.

Abstract

Indonesia faces the challenge of dynamic diversity, where religious moderation is a national priority for maintaining social harmony, but its implementation at the regional level often faces bureaucratic obstacles and gaps in understanding. This study aims to analyze the implementation of religious moderation policies by the Medan City Government from the perspective of the Forum for Religious Harmony (FKUB) as a strategic partner of the government. The method used is library research with a descriptive qualitative approach, relying on primary data in the form of Medan Mayor Regulation No. 28 of 2021 and the 2025 internal reference book of the FKUB of Medan City, supported by relevant secondary literature. The results of the study show that the Medan City Government has a fairly strong regulatory foundation, but from the FKUB's perspective, optimization is still needed in terms of operational budget support and more massive socialization down to the sub-district level to prevent conflicts over the establishment of houses of worship. In conclusion, the synergy between city government regulations and the mediating role of religious leaders in the FKUB is the key to the success of religious moderation in Medan City, thus requiring the strengthening of more intensive institutional dialogue. This study contributes to the scientific discourse by formulating a conflict resolution model that integrates 'Anak Medan' local wisdom and the 'Dalihan Na Tolu' philosophy into formal policy structures, providing a strategic alternative for strengthening religious moderation in heterogeneous urban areas.

Abstract

In responding to globalization and modernization, Islamic boarding schools must adapt without losing their traditional identity. This study aims to analyze the institutional management adaptation strategy of Pesantren Assunniyyah in addressing these dynamics. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, the research explores the meanings behind the experiences and actions of institutional actors through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that adaptation is carried out through the integration of diniyah and formal education up to the higher education level, the professionalization of services, the development of economic and healthcare units, and the implementation of dual governance based on both traditional values and formal regulations. The theoretical contribution lies in advancing organizational hybridization theory within religious institutions, demonstrating that managerial modernization does not necessarily lead to secularization. This study offers a transformative pesantren management model that balances modern accountability with traditional spiritual values, reinforcing competitiveness and economic independence while preserving core institutional identity.
