Abstract

Indonesia is inhabited by people who are predominantly Muslim. The month of Ramadan is a month that Muslims look forward to. Indonesian people, especially in East Java and West Sumatra, have a tradition of welcoming the month of Ramadan, namely the megengan tradition and the malamang tradition. Megengan in East Java is done by praying together and distributing food, especially apem cakes, while malamang is done by making lemang together. The megengan and malamang traditions are a form of Indonesian people's joy in welcoming Ramadan, and these traditions reflect cultural and Islamic values. The purpose of this paper is to compare megengan and malamang as a form of tradition to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. The method used is a qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of literature study. The theory used is functionalism, developed by Bronislaw Malinowski and A.R. Radcliffe-Brown. As a result, these two traditions are traditions carried out by the community as a form of welcoming the arrival of the month of Ramadan, which is carried out collectively by the community and contains Islamic values such as friendship, cooperation, and togetherness. Both traditions are carried out by every element of society, from children to the elderly.

Abstract

This study examines Fatima Mernissi's thoughts on misogynistic hadiths and their relevance to women's leadership in the context of Islam. Mernissi, as a feminist thinker, challenged traditional interpretations of hadith that were considered degrading to women, as she stated in her book "Women and Islam: A Historical and Theological Enquiry." Mernissi argues that there is a defect in the hadith because its message contradicts common sense, particularly in sidelining the role of women as leaders and failing to provide public breadth. Departing from this reasoning, she criticized hadiths with misogynistic undertones concerning their narrators and meanings. This study employs a qualitative approach that includes descriptive analysis and the figure study method. From the results of this research, the author identified two major points in Fatima Mernissi's thought: First, she analyzes the text of the hadith using a historical and methodological approach. Second, the methodology that Mernissi applies is based on Ulūm al-Ḥadīth, which aids her in refuting misogynistic hadiths. She does this when determining whether to accept or reject a hadith. Regarding the understanding of hadith, Mernissi applies a historical approach.

Abstract

This paper outlines the bayānī, ‘irfānī, and burhānī epistemologies that are part of ’Ābid Al-Jābirī’s project to critique Arabic reason. This research aims to explain the construction of truth based on the three systems of thought in the Arab-Islamic world and see its relevance in the present. This research is qualitative research with a type of literature that aims to produce information from various sources. The results indicate that the truth in bayānī epistemology comes from religious texts such as the Qur'an and Hadith using a linguistic approach. The truth in ‘irfānī epistemology is obtained from direct experience God bestows through intuition using spiritual cultivation. The truth in burhānī epistemology comes from the reality obtained through human intellectual abilities through senses, experiments, and logical rules. The synergy of the three epistemologies will form a tradition of critical thinking, empirically based knowledge, and deep spiritual understanding.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the concept of moderation in Javanese puppetry represented through Punakawan characters, identify its actualization in contemporary contexts, and examine its theoretical and practical implications for developing moderation approaches based on local wisdom. Using library research methods with a qualitative-interpretive approach, this study analyzes various primary and secondary sources related to Punakawan and the concept of moderation. The results show that moderation in Punakawan characters is represented in three dimensions: philosophical through spiritual-material balance, social through roles as bridges between groups, and praxis through humorous approaches in social criticism. The actualization of Punakawan moderation values can be applied to address socio-political polarization, socio-economic disparities, and cultural identity crises. This research contributes to developing moderation theory based on local wisdom and provides practical guidance for character education programs, conflict resolution, and moderate leadership. The novelty of this research lies in its integrative approach that connects Punakawan local wisdom with contemporary moderation theory, producing a transformative framework that is adaptive to today’s social challenges.

Abstract

This article examines the meaning of “sīrū fī al-arḍ” in surah al-An’ām [6]: 11, which is literally interpreted as a physical journey, as commonly undertaken by humans. However, because this command is mentioned several times in the Qur’an, which is rich with moral and spiritual messages, its meaning transcends mere physical activity. This study aims to uncover a deeper layer of meaning from this phrase through Roland Barthes semiotic analysis. Barthes analysis is carried out in two stages: the linguistic system, which explains the denotative meaning, and the mythology system, which explains the connotative meaning and the myth. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature review approach. The findings of the study show that the meaning of “sīrū fī al-arḍ” in its linguistic system is a command from Allah swt to humans to travel the earth. In the mythology stage, it is a command for humans to undertake a journey accompanied by reflection, both physically through traveling on earth and spiritually through reading and studying history. Through this connotative meaning, the myth meaning emerges: the importance of understanding history, whether acquired physically through direct travel or spiritually through deepening knowledge of history. This serves as a reminder that every action in this world will receive its reward. This is to prevent humans from being caught up solely in worldly pleasures.

Abstract

In the tafsir tradition, al-ṭayr carries a high spiritual meaning because it is able to show the oneness of Allah. But in a broader context, the word al-ṭayr can refer to human fate, deeds, or responsibilities. This transformation of meaning indicates that birds are not only biological creatures but also spiritual symbols that implicitly describe the journey of human life. But often, humans are caught up in the routine of worldly activities that are far from the ideals taught in the qur’an. This study aims to complement the shortcomings of previous research and to enrich the intellectual treasure by presenting a different perspective on the meaning of al-ṭayr in QS. al-Mulk [67]:19. This article is qualitative research with a library research model. This research uses primary data obtained from the Qur’an and classical and contemporary books of tafsir. While secondary data sources are obtained from reading literature related to the problem. The approach used in this research uses Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. As for the result of the research, the word al-tayr not only reflects physical symbolism but also describes the relationship between human efforts and God’s destiny, which is always tied to the last day.

Abstract

This article attempts to explore contemporary readings of theology. In classical and medieval times, Islamic theology is regarded as a scientific discourse that discusses such metaphysical issues as God, the status of the Quran, eschatology, and other things that include beliefs or principles of faith in Islam with rational arguments. This article as library research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach by exploring primary and secondary sources in the form of textual sources. Employing content analysis approach, this article found that there has been a shift in views on theology in contemporary times. In addition, this article concludes that prophetic social science can become an epistemological and methodological foundation in building transformative and contextual social science. The novelty of this article lies in the fact that prophetic social science is not a normative discourse, but as an integrative epistemological model that eliminates the dichotomy between revelation and reason, between values and facts, and between science and social practice.

Abstract

The development of digital da’wah, particularly Qur’anic interpretation on social media platforms such as Instagram, has provided broad access to Islamic teachings while simultaneously raising serious challenges regarding authenticity and scholarly quality. Moderate figures like Nadirsyah Hosen (@nadirsyahhosen_official) have become prominent in presenting Qur’anic interpretation on Instagram; however, specific studies on the authenticity and quality of his interpretations on this platform remain limited. This study aims to analyze the authenticity and quality of Qur’anic interpretation presented by Nadirsyah Hosen on his Instagram account. This research employs a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The primary data consist of three selected posts from @nadirsyahhosen_official, chosen purposively and analyzed based on parameters of authenticity (fidelity to authoritative Islamic sources) and quality (methodology, relevance, and argumentation). The findings indicate that Nadirsyah Hosen’s interpretations maintain strong authenticity, as evidenced by consistent references to the Qur’an, hadith, and classical scholars’ views. In terms of quality, his approach predominantly combines maudhu’i (thematic) and contextual methods, articulated through poetic and Sufi-inspired language. Hosen successfully translates classical theological concepts into responses to contemporary digital-age issues, such as the crisis of meaning and challenges to faith arising from social media dynamics. This study concludes that Hosen’s Qur’anic interpretations on Instagram represent a model of digital da’wah that effectively integrates scholarly authenticity with communicative quality, resulting in content that is relevant, aesthetically engaging, and transformative for the digital audience.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly influenced social dynamics, particularly the institution of marriage among the millennial generation. This study aims to examine the marriage crisis in the digital era through a netnography approach on TikTok, a popular social media platform among millennials. The netnographic method was employed to analyze content, interactions, and narratives about marital issues shared by TikTok users. Findings reveal that digitalization has brought significant changes in communication, expectations, and conflict resolution among spouses, often leading to crises and divorces. Social media also functions as a public space that expands discourse on marriage issues but may exacerbate problems due to the spread of inaccurate information. This study assesses the relevance of these findings to family law in Indonesia, especially concerning the protection of the rights of spouses and children in the context of modern marriage. The study recommends updating family law policies to be more responsive to challenges in the digital era to ensure healthy and fair marital continuity. Therefore, this research contributes valuable insights to family law studies and the social dynamics of digital millennials.

Abstract

This paper discusses the dynamics of political Islam in the Southeast Asian region, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia. Both countries have similar historical records of political Islam, but they appear to have moved in different directions after the arrival of colonialism and into the modern contemporary era. A comparative method was used as a research analysis method to find the similarities and differences between political Islam in the two countries. Moreover, a historical approach is used as a tool to examine the historical record of the dynamism of political Islam in both countries. Through this method and approach, the author finds three similarities: Indonesia and Malaysia both adhere to a hadārithe substance of Islamic values rather than the formalisation of Islam, and strive to create a civilised Muslim society (Madani Society and Islam Haḍāri). Meanwhile, the differences are the use of the word ‘Islam’ as a symbol in the state constitution and the involvement of the government and non-government actors in the Islam ic political movement. In Malaysia, Islamic politics is dominated by the government elite, while in Indonesia, it tends to be dominated by Islamic mass organizations.
