Abstract

Objective: Purpose: Despite limited research on teams functioning under constrained conditions, this study examines how role clarity, psychological safety, and accountability jointly associate with perceived team effectiveness across three UK sectors. Method: Design/methodology/approach: A cross-sectional survey of 690 employees across healthcare, service, and manufacturing sectors was analysed using Pearson correlations, one-way ANOVA, hierarchical multiple regression, and ANCOVA. Results: Findings: All three predictors were significantly associated with perceived team effectiveness. Role clarity showed the strongest association (β = .27), followed by psychological safety (β = .19) and accountability (β = .13), together explaining 22% of variance. Team learning behaviours contributed an additional 3% (ΔR² = .03). Psychological safety retained significance after ANCOVA adjustment, though with reduced effect size. Novelty: Originality: This study offers the first cross-sector examination of these antecedents within a constrained-functioning team context, integrating the IMOI framework to demonstrate their distinct, additive contributions to perceived effectiveness.

Abstract

Objective: The issue addressed in this study arises from the increasing use of artificial intelligence in contemporary photography, which has the potential to alter the way cultural artifacts are represented. Songket Pandai Sikek, as a visual object rich in historical and symbolic meaning, undergoes aesthetic transformation when processed using AI technology. This raises questions about the extent to which such digital representations can maintain cultural identity or whether they shift the artifact into a purely aesthetic object. This research aims to explore the integration of artificial intelligence in contemporary photography through a case study of the visual representation of Songket Pandai Sikek, while examining the visual changes that occur in the process. Method: The study employs a qualitative approach through visual analysis and case study methods. Comparisons are made between traditional photographs of songket and images generated using AI to identify changes in patterns, textures, colors, and emerging aesthetic characteristics. Results: The findings indicate that AI technology can enhance songket details, sharpen colors, and produce more symmetrical compositions. These transformations expand the possibilities for photographers' visual expression but tend to shift the songket into a mere aesthetic object, potentially diminishing the cultural values that should remain present. Novelty: The integration of AI holds significant potential for innovation in culture-based photography, but it also carries the risk of meaning distortion if not accompanied by sufficient cultural understanding. As a recommendation, strong cultural literacy and ethical guidelines are needed for photographers, digital artists, and researchers to ensure that the use of AI in visual representation continues to respect the symbolic values, cultural identity, and historical context of Songket Pandai Sikek.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines gender based violence and justice for women survivors in Rivers State, Nigeria from 2015 to 2025. The research aims to identify the key obstacles that prevent women survivors of gender based violence in Rivers State from obtaining effective legal support. Method: A qualitative desk review grounded in feminist legal theory using four research questions was conducted using primary and secondary documents, including court records, media reports, legislation, books, and scholarly journal articles to identify patterns across individual, institutional, and societal levels. Results: Findings reveal that barriers operate at multiple, intersecting levels. At the individual level, stigma, fear of retaliation, economic dependence, and low legal literacy discourage reporting. At the institutional level, justice system delays and poor case handling by law enforcement, pose trust challenges and goes further to retraumatize survivors. At the societal level, patriarchal norms, and cultural practices normalise violence and silence survivors. Novelty: The study concludes that justice for women survivors in Rivers State requires coordinated reforms across the legal, health, and social sectors, alongside community level interventions to shift harmful norms. Key recommendations include establishing specialized gender based violence courts, strengthening survivor centered services, expediting case adjudication, mandating gender sensitivity training for law enforcement and judicial officers, and enforcing the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act 2015. This study contributes to limited state level data on GBV justice pathways in the Niger Delta. Findings are relevant for policymakers implementing the VAPP Act, NGOs designing survivor support programs, and journalists covering GBV ethically.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to identify the effectiveness of the cooperative learning strategy in developing critical reading skills among first-year students at the College of Law, Al-Ayen Iraqi University. Method: Cooperative learning is considered a modern teaching strategy based on positive interaction, organized group work, role distribution, and participatory knowledge construction. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design with two equivalent groups: an experimental group taught through cooperative learning and a control group taught through the traditional method. The sample consisted of 350 first-year law students, including 200 males and 150 females. The sample was divided into two groups: the experimental group, which studied according to the cooperative learning strategy, and the control group, which studied according to the traditional method. The researcher prepared a critical reading skills test that measured the ability to analyze ideas, distinguish facts from opinions, infer implicit meanings, evaluate arguments and evidence, identify fallacies, and formulate critical judgments. The validity of the test was verified through expert judgment, and its reliability was verified using Cronbach’s alpha. Results: The results showed statistically significant differences at the 0.05 level in favor of the experimental group in the post-test, with a large effect size. This indicates the effectiveness of the cooperative learning strategy in developing critical reading skills among law students. Novelty: Cooperative learning is considered a modern teaching strategy based on positive interaction, organized group work, role distribution, and participatory knowledge construction. This study aims to identify the effectiveness of the cooperative learning strategy in developing critical reading skills among first-year students at the College of Law, Al-Ayen Iraqi University. In light of these results, the study recommends adopting this strategy in higher education, especially in courses that require text analysis, interpretation, and evaluation.

Abstract

Objective: Consequently, this research endeavors to deliver a rigorous analysis of fasakh nikah through the theoretical lens of the Shāfiʿī school, coupled with a critical evaluation of its practical enforcement in the Mahkamah Syarʿiyyah. Method:Adopting a library-based research design, the study utilizes content analysis, hermeneutics, and comparative methodologies to scrutinize primary literature, specifically classical Shāfiʿī treatises and contemporary judicial decrees from the Mahkamah Syarʿiyyah. Results: The results indicate that the conceptualization of fasakh in Shāfiʿī doctrine exhibits unique structural characteristics, differentiating it fundamentally from talak (unilateral repudiation), khuluʿ (divorce initiated by the wife), and liʿan (mutual imprecation). The legally recognized bases for annulment categorized into physiological anomalies, statutory barriers, and financial inadequacies are universally anchored in the foundational legal maxim of harm mitigation. Novelty: A comparative evaluation further highlights that the paramount feature of fasakh is its independence from the permissible talak quota and the absence of any requisite financial restitution from the wife, thereby cementing its role as a purely equitable instrument of justice. Its operationalization within the Mahkamah Syarʿiyyah demonstrates a broadening of judicial ijtihad (independent jurisprudential reasoning) capable of adaptively navigating contemporary socio-legal intricacies.

Abstract

Objective: This study diagnoses the security situation in Imo State, identifying the causes and enabling factors that sustains insecurity in parts of the state since 2020. The study was motivated by the need to complement government efforts in peace building and security, which is currently yielding positive results in the areas of dislodging criminal elements from previously occupied communities and hideouts, resettlement of residents who had abandoned their communities and rebuilding infrastructure in various communities destroyed by insecurity, armed banditry and criminality. Method: The methodology of the study was qualitative, using thematic analysis of relevant aspects of the research study. The study was anchored on the Human Security Theory by Mahbub ul Haq. Results: The study identified the causes of insecurity from four schools of thought, namely political, secessionist, opportunistic and sociological schools of thought. Six key enablers were identified, which are community connivance, fear factor, failure of statutory state security agents, existence of ungoverned spaces, ideological enablers and the criminal economy of insecurity. Novelty: The study therefore, recommended, among others, a multi stakeholders’ approach that will involve the Government, the People and the use of Technology (GPT approach).

Abstract

Objective: The communal land conflict continues to be a problem in Nigeria which affects governance, security and socio-economic development especially in agrarian communities. This study deals with the Amasiri–Oso (Edda) crisis in Ebonyi State to analyse the dynamics of communal land dispute, and evaluate the effectiveness of state response to this crisis. While these conflicts can be traced back to historical and cultural background, the prolonged existence of such conflicts do raise critical issues concerning the capacity of states, institutional legitimacy and sustainable conflict management. Method: Qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews, and secondary data sources (government reports, media accounts, and scholarly literature) were used in this study. Thematic and content analysis were used to analyse the data and find patterns in conflict drivers and state intervention strategies. The analysis draws on State Capacity Theory that theorizes the importance of constraints on institutional coordination, enforcement, and legitimacy on the outcomes of governance in conflict settings. Results: The results indicated that historical uncertainties of land ownership, socio-economic stress on land, political manoeuvres and identity claims are the forces driving the conflict. Reactive responses, such as deployment of security forces, administrative measures and lack of effective inter-agency coordination, have been inadequate to address root causes. Legitimacy and effectiveness of interventions are further undermined by perceptions of bias, lack of integration of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms and implementation gaps. The conflict also has an impact on the governance of the area, loss of trust in institutions, displacement, loss of livelihoods and reduced productivity. Novelty: The research finding is the need to move from reactive crisis management to integrated and preventive approaches to conflict resolution for sustainable outcomes. It calls for improved land governance, institutionalised hybrid conflict resolution mechanisms, better inter-agency coordination, as well as conflict-sensitive development policies for lasting peace and governance stability.

Abstract

Objective: The implementation of special autonomy authority in Aceh Province through the application of Qanun Number 6 of 2014 concerning Jinayat Law has raised dynamics in law enforcement, particularly in handling sexual harassment cases. The sentencing practice that focuses on inflicting physical punishment in the form of caning (offender-oriented) is considered to leave a vacuum in providing guarantees of substantive justice for the victims. This study aims to examine three main issues: (1) the proportionality of caning for perpetrators of sexual harassment when viewed from substantive justice for the victims; (2) the implications of enforcing the Jinayat Qanun on the victims' right to feel safe and human rights protection; and (3) the idea of reconstructing the enforcement of jinayat law to be oriented towards victim recovery (victim-oriented). Method: This study uses a normative legal research method through a statute approach and a conceptual approach. Data collection was carried out through library research on laws and regulations, court decisions, human rights instruments, and academic literature, which were then analyzed qualitatively-descriptively. Results: The results of the study indicate that, first, the imposition of caning in sexual harassment cases is not proportional to the victim's suffering. The short-lived physical execution is considered disproportionate to the long-term psychological trauma experienced by the victim, thus failing to fulfill the element of substantive justice. Second, the current enforcement of jinayat law is not yet optimal in accommodating the fundamental rights of the victims, especially the recovery instruments and the fulfillment of the right to feel safe and protected as mandated by the constitution. Novelty: Third, it is necessary to reconstruct the paradigm of Islamic criminal law in Aceh by adopting victimological principles, where the orientation of sentencing must not stop at mere physical punishment, but must be integrated with the obligation of restitution and psychological rehabilitation that guarantees the full recovery of the victims.
