Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the role of the mosque as a religious institution in driving the socio-economic empowerment of the community, drawing upon a case study of the Jami' Hasanudin Sabbihisma Rabbikal A'la Mosque in Katapiang, Padang Pariaman. This inquiry is highly significant, as the current discourse on mosque-based empowerment remains predominantly governed by normative approaches, while empirical studies elucidating socio-economic empowerment practices at the localized level remain relatively scarce. Method: Utilizing a qualitative approach alongside a case study methodology, this research seeks to comprehend how mosque-implemented programs contribute to the advancement of congregational welfare. Data were systematically gathered through observation, in-depth interviews, and the documentation of various mosque activities. Results: The findings reveal that the mosque's function has evolved significantly beyond a mere ritualistic role, emerging as a central hub for community empowerment through social assistance programs, religious cultivation, the reinforcement of social solidarity, and the administration of productive business units capable of generating employment for the public. These multifaceted initiatives not only stimulate congregational participation but also sustainably fortify the social and economic capacities of the community. Novelty: Ultimately, the findings of this study substantiate that mosques harbor strategic potential as community-based agents of social change, uniquely positioned to integrate spiritual, social, and economic functions. This research thereby contributes to the broader academic literature on mosque-based community empowerment by supplying empirical evidence of a viable socio-economic empowerment model, which may serve as a benchmark for the formulation of analogous programs in other local community contexts.

Abstract

Objective: Direct regional head elections in Indonesia require candidate pairs to adopt effective political marketing strategies to win the support of increasingly fragmented voters. This study investigates the political marketing strategies used by the Darma Wijaya–Adlin Umar Yusri Tambunan (“Dambaan”) pair in the 2020 Serdang Bedagai (Sergai) Regent Election, which successfully defeated the two-term incumbent. Using Niffenegger’s 4P marketing mix theoretical framework (Product, Promotion, Price, Place) and Nursal’s push–pull–pass typology, this study aims to identify the target domains, media channels used, drivers and barriers to constituent support, communication strategies, and perceptions of the realization of campaign promises after the inauguration. Method: Using an embedded mixed-methods design, data were collected through questionnaires with 21 respondents, in-depth interviews with key informants of the campaign team, and documentation studies during the first 100 days of the administration. Results: The findings indicate that the pair's victory relied heavily on a push marketing strategy through grassroots engagement (blusukan) and pass marketing mediated by youth and religious organizations (such as Pemuda Pancasila and GP Ansor), which served as the primary channel, replacing expensive digital infrastructure. Constituent support was driven by personal closeness and trust established long before the candidacy, while opposition stemmed primarily from residual loyalty to the previous incumbent. Novelty: Post-inauguration, the majority of respondents expressed satisfaction with the pair's initial performance, particularly in infrastructure and irrigation improvements, indicating that marketed promises were followed up with concrete governance.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines the representations of innocence, sincerity, and wholehearted commitment embodied by the character of Bagong in the Bagong Gendro shadow puppet performance and the playing behavior of Kylian Mbappé through the lens of Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. Method: Employing a qualitative research approach, the study applies Barthes' three levels of semiotic analysis: denotation, connotation, and myth. The primary data consist of documentation of the Bagong Gendro wayang kulit performance and audiovisual recordings of Kylian Mbappé's performances in football matches. Results: The findings reveal that Bagong represents innocence, honesty, and sincerity as forms of moral strength, whereas Mbappé embodies commitment, professionalism, and dedication in pursuing collective goals. At the level of myth, both representations construct the understanding that success is determined not merely by individual ability but also by integrity, consistency, and genuine commitment in fulfilling one's role. This study demonstrates that the local cultural values embodied in the character of Bagong can engage in dialogue with the global values of professionalism represented by a modern sports figure, thereby offering a reflection on the cultural identity of the Nusantara people within an international context. Novelty: This study comparatively analyzes the symbolic representations of Bagong and Kylian Mbappé through Roland Barthes' semiotic framework, connecting local cultural values with global professional ethics.

Abstract

Objective: Catur Harimau is a Minangkabau traditional strategy game involving three tiger pieces and twenty-two goat pieces. In the observed communities, direct play practices and intergenerational transmission have become increasingly difficult to encounter. This article explains how the game's structure, strategic values, and cultural identity were transformed into a contemporary illustrative mural. Method: The creation employed practice-based research through artistic inquiry, material mapping, visual and technical exploration, design, realization, and reflection. Data were gathered through literature review, observation of the game and site, visual documentation, virtual exploration, and interviews with four informants in Agam and Bukittinggi. Results: The outcome is Catur Harimau Reborn, a 10 × 2.5 metre mural at Sekolah Alam Bukittinggi. The game board forms the compositional centre, while a tiger, a goat, seven children, Rumah Gadang, mountains, marawa colours, and typography construct an accessible cultural narrative. Novelty: Its novelty lies in translating a traditional game into public art, developing simple counters into expressive anthropomorphic characters, and inviting viewers to engage through visual reading. The mural offers a visual framework for cultural communication and education; however, its actual audience impact requires a separate reception study.
