Abstract

The practice of reciting the Qur'an rhythmically and slowly, as indicated by the term rattalnahu tartīlan, has sparked significant debate regarding the balance between understanding and aesthetic beauty. This research seeks to uncover the historical meaning of this term by examining the broader context of the verses. Specifically, the study focuses on QS. al-Furqan [25]:30-33, analyzed through the ma'nā-cum-maghzā approach. The findings reveal that rattalnahu tartīlan is a small yet integral part of the verse's response to the accusations made by the Quraysh of Makkah against the Prophet's mission. The Quraysh's habit of making unreasonable demands to undermine the Prophet is reflected in this context, particularly concerning the gradual revelation of the Qur'an. The term rattalnahu tartīlan signifies the method used to embed the Qur'an's content into the Prophet's heart, justifying its gradual revelation. The derogatory claim, linked to the use of the term mahjurā, is found exclusively in verses revealed before the Hijrah (Makkiyah). God's response to the Quraysh's persistent pressure, which troubled the Prophet, is a declaration that opposition is inevitable for every Prophet. The opposition from the Prophet's enemies was met with a truthful and clear response from God, encapsulated in the overall message of QS. al-Furqan [25]:30-33, which serves to bring peace to the Prophet Muhammad.

Abstract

Ibn Kaṡīr’s approach to simplifying and expanding meaning through the citation of various riwayat suggests a subjective tendency in his interpretation. This study aims to uncover Ibn Kaṡīr’s subjective narratives by analyzing his selection and organization of riwāyah, comparing them to the interpretations of earlier scholars who followed similar criteria. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing Julia Kristeva's intertextual analysis model, and focuses on the exegesis of QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 21-22. The study reveals that Ibn Kaṡīr utilized mechanisms of transformation, transposition, and opposition in relation to previous interpretations when explaining these verses. He appears to have distorted the meanings of existing narrations to support his own views, which can be observed in the way he adjusted certain narrations for use in his interpretative process. The variety of narrations provided by earlier scholars is summarized by Ibn Kaṡīr to align with his intended meaning. His selective presentation of certain narrations over others that have equal interpretative potential results in an identity of meaning consistent with his inclination towards Ibn Taymīyah’s interpretative approach. However, unlike Ibn Taymīyah, Ibn Kaṡīr tends to rely on favored narrations to establish a singular meaning. This subjective tendency influences the formation of an interpretative model that emphasizes a subject-object relationship, wherein the Qur'an's own context is overshadowed by the interpreter's will as a subject.

Abstract

Mystical interpretations that are often seen as irrational interpretations obscure the rationality and scientific values contained in these interpretations. The assessment of mystical interpretation as irrational interpretation is caused by the understanding that someone who interprets mystically is thought to have no capability in interpreting the Qur’an. Thus, this study aims to demonstrate Aḥmad ibn ‘Alī al-Būnī’s mystical reasoning when interpreting the Qur’an in Shams al-Ma’ārif al-Kubrā from the argument that mystical interpretation-although seemingly irrational-has its own scientific basis and logical flow to arrive at a mystical understanding of the Qur’an. To achieve this goal, this study uses a qualitative method with the semiotic theory offered by Roland Barthes, which he divides into denotation and connotation analysis as a knife of analysis. The study shows that al-Būnī’s scientific background plays an important role in shaping his understanding of the Qur’anic verses. The interpretation of the basmalah, for example, al-Būnī interpreted it as a symbol of security, guarding, conquest, blessing, help, and salvation that resulted from his understanding of the names of the all-protective Allah contained in the term. The above understanding was formed through al-Būnī’s scientific background which mastered the science of letters (ilm al-huruf) and the names of Allah (al-Asma’ al-Husna). As a result, there are practices on the basmalah, such as reciting the basmalah 20 times before going to bed to avoid theft, demonic interference, or disaster.

Abstract

The narrative of Ashabul Kahf, the seven young men who fled from an oppressive ruler, as portrayed in Surah al-Kahf, stands as a paradigmatic example of the Qur’an’s depiction of faith and moral integrity in young believers. Az-Zamakhsyari’s al-Kasysyaf offers an insightful interpretation of these verses, emphasizing elements that inspire the deepening of faith and the cultivation of moral excellence within the Muslim community through reflection on this story. This study, grounded in an ethical-Sufistic framework primarily informed by al-Ghazali, investigates the intersection of ethical concepts with az-Zamakhsyari’s exegetical approach. It explores two central questions: How does az-Zamakhsyari accentuate the depiction of faith and moral virtues in the account of Ashabul Kahf? And how can this portrayal be analyzed through the lens of ethical-Sufistic concepts? The research reveals that az-Zamakhsyari underscores, within his interpretive narrative, the courageous risk-taking of Ashabul Kahf in safeguarding their faith. They are depicted as individuals who mutually support each other, practice self-restraint, and engage in contemplative reasoning to attain wisdom. These qualities align closely with al-Ghazali’s ethical-Sufistic framework, which identifies praiseworthy virtues (al-akhlaq al-mahmudah) such as courage (al-syaja’ah), self-restraint (al-‘iffah), wisdom (al-hikmah), and balance (al-‘adl).

Abstract

The Messawe tradition in Saiyyang Pattuqduq To Tammaq Mangayi in Mandar, West Sulawesi, represents an aesthetic reception of the Qur’an that involves a khatam ceremony with local cultural influences. This research aims to understand how this tradition functions as an expression of the collective identity of the Mandar people and the relationship between the Qur’anic text and the cultural practices. The research employs a qualitative methodology, including participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The findings indicate that first, this tradition reflects an aesthetic reception of the Qur’an that focuses not only on recitation but also on cultural and spiritual symbolism; second, the Messawe procession integrates local cultural elements with religious reverence, strengthening the collective identity of the Mandar community; third, this tradition demonstrates how sacred texts are responded to creatively and aesthetically, creating a relationship between religion and culture. The contribution of this research lies in a more holistic understanding of the role of the Qur’an in the social and cultural life of Muslims in Indonesia.

Abstract

The flow of interpretation often becomes 'commonplace' when examining the dynamics of Qur'anic exegesis, particularly in the classical and medieval periods. Sayyid Qutb, in his work Tafsir fi Zilal al-Qur'an, is believed to incorporate a da'wah narrative aimed at disseminating a comprehensive understanding of Islamic law. His interpretation reflects the historical context and personal experiences of the Mufassir, which influenced his interpretative style. For instance, materialism and hedonism are seen as underlying factors that have led to certain interpretative perspectives, phenomena that remain prevalent in society today. Therefore, this study seeks to uncover the da'wah narrative in Sayyid Qutb's interpretation and explore his response to the phenomenon of a hedonistic lifestyle, specifically referring to QS. al-Hadid: 20, QS. al-An'am: 32, QS. al-Qasas: 32, and  QS. at-Takathur: 1-2. To achieve this, the research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing content analysis as a data analysis tool. The study's findings reveal Sayyid Qutb's efforts to uphold Islamic reform by opposing life systems that marginalize Islamic values, such as materialism and hedonism. In Sayyid Qutb's perspective, hedonism is addressed through advocating for a balanced approach that harmonizes worldly pursuits with the values of the hereafter.

Abstract

The debate regarding the presence of Mu’tazilah concepts in the interpretation of al-Kasysyāf remains a topic of discussion in interpretive literature. This debate stems from az-Zamakhsyarī’s theological identity as a proponent of Mu’tazilah thought. This study seeks to re-examine how az-Zamakhsyarī integrated Mu’tazilah conceptions into his work, al-Kasysyāf, by focusing on the dominant linguistic elements of his interpretation. To achieve this, the research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing content analysis as the primary tool for data analysis. Additionally, the study employs a representation model to differentiate the ways in which az-Zamakhsyarī received and applied Mu’tazilah teachings. The findings reveal that az-Zamakhsyarī’s extensive use of linguistic analysis in interpreting the Quran often led to clear statements affirming his Mu’tazilah stance. However, he appears ambiguous when addressing the concept of the Oneness of God, a core tenet of Mu’tazilah doctrine, which was a sensitive issue in his time. This ambiguity is also evident in discussions concerning the ontological nature of God, where az-Zamakhsyarī tends to avoid the in-depth linguistic exploration seen in other areas, differing from his approach in al-Minhāj fi Uṣūl ad-Dīn. This reluctance to delve into sensitive topics leads to a diminished presence of Mu’tazilah narratives in al-Kasysyāf, contributing to varied interpretations of its content regarding Mu’tazilah teachings in Quranic exegesis.

Abstract

The Mustofa Bisri Channel's usage of YouTube to study tafsir al-Ibrīz represents a substantial shift from traditional teaching techniques. This phenomenon demonstrates a shift from traditional educational techniques to the use of modern technology, particularly social media, to convey religious knowledge. Mustofa Bisri, better known as Gus Mus, uses vernacularization to provide explanations for current situations. This study focuses on how social media promotes conversation between historical texts and present realities. This study examines vernacularization in tafsir al-Ibrīzsessions, including oral interpretation and its impact on comprehension. The Mustofa Bisri Channel's usage of YouTube to study tafsir al-Ibrīz represents a substantial shift from traditional teaching techniques. The authority of a traditional scholar, such as Gus Mus, provides a counter-narrative to less experienced ustaz, indicating pesantren's metamorphosis in the face of modern challenges. This qualitative study employs YouTube content analysis to investigate how local discourse is addressed in spoken interpretations, as well as how oral qualities influence the meaning and relevance of Quranic teachings. Tafsir al-Ibrīz sessions on YouTube demonstrate vernacularization by the use of local language and replies to modern challenges, increasing understanding of Quranic studies. The characteristics of oral interpretation, including the use of conservative language and situational meaning, as well as audience engagement, illustrate how Gus Mus adapts to modernity while preserving the diverse traditions of pesantren teaching.

Abstract

The works of tafsir in Indonesia, from before to after independence, reflect the socioeconomic and cultural situations of the writers and readers, as seen by the employment of numerous scripts such as Arabic, Cacarakan, Jawi, Latin, Lontara, and Pegon. This study analyzes style changes in Oemar Bakry’s Tafsir Rahmat, specifically interpreting Q.S. An-Nisā’ [4]: 15-18. This study used a stylistic technique to detect four types of stile variation in Tafsir Rahmat: word choice, sentence type variation, rhetorical writing style, and cross-referencing. The study discovered that, in addition to script, style variety influences the character of tafsir compositions. Although prior research has focused on language, script, and specific themes in tafsir works, the study of stylistic differences in Tafsir Rahmat remains limited. The analysis results reveal that stile changes not only simplify message delivery, but also enhance the beauty of language in interpretation. This study contributes significantly to the study of tafsir by emphasizing the role of stylistic variation in the efficiency of tafsir communication.

Abstract

Classical interpretations that often see ‘iddah as simply a waiting period to avoid new marriages or certain activities reduce the complexity of deeper meaning. This is complicated by the increasing role of women today in the public sphere. Thus, encouraging researchers to reinterpret the concept of ‘iddah in Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 234. To achieve this goal, this study uses a qualitative method with ma’nā-cum-maghzā theory as an analytical tool. This study shows that Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 234 is a verse that talks about efforts to provide a safe space for women to mourn and cope with the loss of a husband. In addition, ‘iddah also serves to protect women from the shackles of social constructions that may be burdensome and harmful. In the context of Islamic law, ‘iddah also provides legal relief that helps women to deal with difficult situations more securely. Last but not least, the authentication of lineage regardless of changing social norms as times evolve must be maintained. Moreover, this verse encourages people to play an active role as agents of social transformation.
