Abstract

This study investigates Ibn Kaṡīr's interpretation of QS. al-Mā'idah [5]: 51, with particular emphasis on the prohibition against taking Jews and Christians as awliyā' (loyal friends or protectors). Ibn Kaṡīr  interprets awliyā' using the term muwālat, which connotes forming close friendships or alliances. This interpretation appears to contradict a hadith that he himself cites, which indicates that such relationships may be permissible under certain circumstances. The study seeks to describe and analyze how Ibn Kaṡīr's socio-historical context, particularly during the Crusades, influenced his interpretation of this verse. By employing an analytical-descriptive approach within a literature review framework, this research examines how interpretive biases can emerge when the socio-historical context of the exegete is not adequately considered. The findings reveal that Ibn Kaṡīr's stringent interpretation, which broadly prohibits Muslims from forming close alliances with Jews and Christians, is deeply rooted in the religious and political tensions of his time. The study underscores the necessity of adopting a holistic approach in Qur'anic exegesis to mitigate potential biases stemming from the socio-historical circumstances of the exegete.

Abstract

The textual interpretation of various Quranic verses, particularly those relating to Indonesian societal traditions, reflects an ideological approach that is disseminated through the RodjaTV YouTube channel. The oral explanation of these meanings shapes the listener's perception, leading them to accept the presented interpretation as an accurate reflection of reality. This study aims to uncover the mechanisms through which tradition is integrated into the interpretation of Qur'anic verses. Employing a qualitative method with framing analysis, the research reveals that the explanation of verse meanings—particularly when directly connected to the context of the verse or the historical narrative of the people addressed—creates an analogy with Indonesian traditions. This analogy produces a discursive alignment that suggests a similar treatment and punishment are warranted. This core framing is presented in a unified narrative that serves to validate the perspective offered. The emerging imagery is reinforced through common phrases like “returning to the Qur'an” and “returning to the Sunnah”. The depiction of tradition as analogous to the realities faced by the communities mentioned in the verses is further emphasized by the repeated use of terms such as kafir (unbeliever), misguided, and ghalw (excessiveness). In this framework, desacralization occurs not through the distortion of specific terms, but by forming analogies that equate the targeted subjects of the verses with the traditions practiced in Indonesian society. As a result, these traditions are portrayed as parallel to the disbelief and transgressions of the earlier communities, who were the original focus of the Quranic verses.

Abstract

The diversity of interpretations surrounding the prohibitive figure in QS. Ali ‘Imran [3]: 118, reflected in the terms biṭānah and min dūnikum as presented by various interpreters, carries the potential to foster exclusive behaviors within Muslim communities, especially in multi-religious regions. This study seeks to uncover the historical meaning intended in the verse to clarify the nature of this figure. Utilizing a qualitative approach, with the ma'nā-cum-maghzā method as an analytical tool, the research reveals that biṭānah refers to a close confidant who is granted access to personal information. Interpretations commonly align on this understanding, which contrasts with the term min dūnikum. The latter term is deeply embedded in its immediate context, pointing to a figure who lacks the same level of discretion or shared vision within a friendship. The divergence in vision leads to a potential for betrayal, prompting the verse to issue a caution regarding relationships with such individuals. This caution stems from the character of those who, not sharing the same vision, may harbor ill intentions, both physically and spiritually. The study concludes that the significance of min dūnikumlies not in religious identity but in the nature of the friendship, where differing visions can lead to a propensity for betrayal, even among members of the same community.

Abstract

The growing demand for the printed copy of the Quran, addressed by publishers through various innovations such as the introduction of new pause marks, reflects a shift from use value to commercial value. This study aims to demonstrate this shift by examining how new pause marks are determined. Employing a qualitative method, the research utilizes the qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) model for data analysis. The study reveals differences in the purpose behind implementing new pause marks in waqf-ibtidā’, primarily due to deviations from the syntactical relationships upheld in standard waqf-ibtidā’ rules. A consistent pattern of separation between elements such as fi’il and fā’il, mubtadā’ and khabr, and al-ḥāl and ṣāḥib al-ḥāl is observed. This separation caters to aesthetic considerations, purportedly to accommodate new Qur'an readers who might have shortness of breath. Such a purpose points to the marketing-oriented image-building of waqf-ibtidā’, aiming to facilitate ease in finding stopping points. However, this emphasis on convenience often leads to the distortion of meaning, as it interrupts the linguistic coherence, making the text harder to understand. The focus on innovations that enhance marketability highlights a form of commodification that overlooks the traditional use value of the Qur'an. This shift from use value to commercial value underscores a trend among producers of the printed copy of Quran of waqf-ibtidā’ to place the Quran within an industrial context that promotes religion’s presence in the public sphere.

Abstract

The debate surrounding the subjectivity in aṭ-Ṭabarī’s use of history in his work Jāmi' al-Bayān challenges the perception of its popularity as a widely-referenced tafsīr bi ar-riwāyah (interpretation based on narration). The assumption that aṭ-Ṭabari defended tradition in his Quranic interpretation process necessitates an exploration of the contextual factors shaping his discursive formation. This study aims to uncover the interconnections within this formation by employing qualitative methods supported by archaeological analysis. The findings indicate that the intense intellectual debates during the Abbasid caliphate’s knowledge advancements influenced aṭ-Ṭabari’s interpretive model. The rationalistic tendencies that began to permeate Quranic interpretation were countered by aṭ-Ṭabarī’s decision to rely exclusively on well-known narrations from the Companions and Tabi'in. This approach is reflected in the interpretation of various verses on a majority scale. The intensity of the debates during aṭ-Ṭabarī’s era not only impacted interpretive methods but also extended to legal rulings and theological beliefs, often using Quranic arguments. Aṭ-Ṭabarī's response to this dynamic involved an interpretive model that emphasized the preeminence (tarjīḥ) of specific traditions, revealing his subjective inclinations. Similarly, his approach to responding to fiqh and theological issues, which often involved syllogism and linguistic analysis, demonstrates a tendency to choose meanings while critiquing the interpretive products of various schools of thought, indicating an inconsistency with the school he ostensibly supported. This aspect reveals aṭ-Ṭabarī’s independence from the prevailing mainstream schools of his time.

Abstract

This study examines the application of vernacularization in Al-Amin's translation of the Qur'an, aiming to understand how the adaptation of the Sundanese language influences the comprehension and reception of sacred texts within the local cultural context. The research focuses on the use of both buhun (ancient) and kiwari (modern) languages in the translation, with the goal of aligning the Qur'anic text with Sundanese cultural wisdom. Employing content analysis and Sally Engle Merry's theory of vernacularization, the study investigates how language adaptation reflects the interaction between the Qur'anic text and Sundanese culture. The findings indicate that Al-Amin's translation effectively integrates local cultural elements through the use of buhun language to preserve cultural identity and contemporary language to ensure relevance for modern readers. This balance between tradition and modernity facilitates greater understanding within the local community. Additionally, the research reveals that vernacularization not only addresses linguistic issues but also enhances the understanding of the sacred text by aligning its meaning with the social realities of Sundanese culture. This contributes significantly to translation and cultural interaction studies, demonstrating how Qur'anic translation can act as a bridge between source and target cultures and expand our understanding of how sacred texts are adapted to local contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates how The Study Quran, a commentary led by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, represents religious literacy within the framework of religious and cultural diversity. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research examines this commentary to delineate the concept of religious literacy and illustrates how this concept is manifested in the commentary's interpretation. The findings reveal that "The Study Quran" aims to foster an inclusive discourse by eschewing terminology that could incite sectarian conflict and emphasizing a universal understanding of submission to God. The commentary underscores the significance of interfaith dialogue and diversity while deliberately avoiding extremist interpretations, instead advocating for moderation and justice across various religions. By utilizing a thorough hermeneutical approach and offering a comprehensive understanding of the Quranic teachings, "The Study Quran" emerges as a crucial instrument in promoting peaceful coexistence and mitigating religiously motivated conflicts in multicultural contexts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of understanding among some members of society regarding the diversity of interpretations, particularly in the story of Adam and Eve's expulsion from paradise, which is often perceived as their fault. The study focuses on two prominent Indonesian scholars, Ustaz Adi Hidayat and Gus Baha. From the various discussions by these two figures on the story of Prophet Adam, this research is limited to videos from three YouTube channels: Adi Hidayat Official, Tafsir NU, and Ngaji Gus Baha Jogja. The aim of this research is to analyze the controversies surrounding the interpretation of the story of Prophet Adam between Ustaz Adi Hidayat and Gus Baha, as well as to understand the ideological constructs presented in these discourses. The research uses a qualitative approach based on a literature study, with primary data obtained from the videos on these three YouTube channels. The analysis of the study employs Norman Fairclough's critical discourse theory, encompassing textual aspects, discourse practice (analysis of the YouTube accounts), and sociocultural practice (external factors influencing interpretation). The results reveal two main controversies: first, the interpretation related to the angels in Surah Al-Baqarah [2]: 30; second, the interpretation regarding the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise. Additionally, there are differences in how the story is presented. Gus Baha tends to use a philological approach, while Ustaz Adi Hidayat focuses more on linguistic studies. The analysis of the YouTube accounts indicates that Tafsir NU and Ngaji Gus Baha Jogja tend to support Nahdlatul Ulama, which is based on ahlus sunnah wal jamaah, whereas Adi Hidayat Official leans towards Muhammadiyah, which does not adhere to a single imam. Thus, Gus Baha clearly supports ahlus sunnah wal jamaah, while Ustaz Adi Hidayat does not associate his interpretation with any particular manhaj.

Abstract

As-Suyūṭī’s reconstruction of the nāsikh-mansūkh concept responds to shifts in social and historical contexts, aiming to maintain its relevance and applicability for Muslims. This study seeks to explore his stance on nāsikh-mansūkh by linking it to the legal reform mechanisms he developed. Utilizing a qualitative method within a sociology of knowledge framework, the research found that as-Suyūṭī’s understanding of nāsikh-mansūkh emerged from synthesizing previous thoughts, adapted to meet the needs of his era. As-Suyūṭī saw nāsikh-mansūkh as a concept born out of the evolving needs for new laws due to contextual changes. This perspective underpinned his argument for issuing various fatwas. This approach took shape in a society facing degradation in various aspects, necessitating new laws to address emerging needs. His pragmatic way of thinking was driven by the specific needs of his time, leading him to reconceptualize issues previously unrelated. This inclination led as-Suyūṭī to reject certain verses classified as nāsikh-mansūkh by earlier scholars, arguing that they no longer met societal needs. His adaptive approach diverged from the traditional thinking of his contemporaries in Islamic jurisprudence, sparking significant polemics and debates.

Abstract

The renewal concepts offered by contemporary Indonesian thinkers on actual issues involve legitimizing their views through the Quran. The approach of validating these issues, such as religious freedom, using various Quranic verses showcases a range of interpretations that can appear subjective and arbitrary. This research seeks to uncover the dialectical relationship between contemporary Indonesian thinkers, specifically Nurcholis Madjid, Abdurrahman Wahid, and Djohan Effendi, and the Quran, which forms a response of meaning to address current issues. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study utilizes Hans Robert Jauss’reception theory for data analysis. The findings indicate that the tendency to use the Qur'an in addressing actual issues is grounded in the compatibility of meaning, using the keywords within the verses that align with the issues being discussed. When suitable keywords are identified in a verse, they are interpreted with a dominance of the initial impression of understanding, primarily based on their linguistic meanings. This uniformity in meaning perception, which emphasizes objective meaning through language, is then applied to the contemporary context. The perception of liberal interpretation arises because the traditional interpretative moment, which mediates various perspectives of past interpreters, is often bypassed. As a result, these interpretative efforts cannot be fully categorized under the concept of contextual interpretation. However, the determination of objective meaning through textual analysis, extended to a new context that incorporates the subjective experiences of each thinker, makes this understanding mechanism not as subjective as commonly assumed.
