Abstract

This study explores plastic waste management through the use of ecobricks at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Jombang, from the perspective of environmental theology. The research highlights the lack of studies on the integration of spiritual values and sustainability practices in Islamic boarding school environments. A qualitative approach was employed using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The analysis is grounded in Sayyed Hossein Nasr’s theory of ecotheology, which views nature as a manifestation of the Divine, rather than a mere object of exploitation. The findings reveal that the ecobrick program is carried out participatively by students through systematic stages: collecting, cleaning, cutting, compressing plastic into bottles, and constructing functional items. As a result, plastic waste is transformed into usable products such as tables, chairs, and decorations. Beyond its ecological impact, the program also strengthens character education and spiritual awareness of the environment.

Abstract

Given its vulnerability to disasters, Indonesia necessitates an effective mitigation strategy to promote disaster mitigation awareness from an early age. This article analyzes the role of Surabaya Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in disaster mitigation education in elementary schools through qualitative approach with phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations in three elementary schools in Surabaya. The results of the study indicate that disaster education from an early age has been proven to shape responsive attitudes, reduce panic, and increase students' readiness in facing emergency situations. Effectiveness of this educational process can be seen from three main aspects: cognitive understanding improvement, attitude change, and practical skills of students in responding to disaster threats. However, challenges such as limited budget and human resources need to be overcome to expand the scope of the program. These findings prove that school-based education approach is effective in building sustainable disaster awareness.

Abstract

Climate change increases risks for the agricultural sector through shifting rainfall patterns, prolonged dry seasons, and rising average temperatures that reduce production. These conditions demand strong adaptive capacity among smallholder farmers, yet studies on their strategies remain limited. This research aims to analyze the adaptive capacity of rural farmers in responding to climate change. A qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews using purposive sampling in five districts of Brebes Regency (5–9 participants per site), with data analyzed using NVivo 12. Findings show that farmers rely on local knowledge, such as reading natural signs to determine planting times, and technical skills in water management and cultivation practices. Adaptation also includes the use of water pumps, drought-resistant seeds, and weather-based mobile applications, although access to technology remains limited. Collaborative capacity is reflected in partnerships with agricultural extension workers, NGOs, and farmer forums. The study highlights the importance of strengthening community-based internal capacity and policy support that integrates local knowledge into climate adaptation strategies

Abstract

This study aims to understand how the Kediri Regency Government represents local wisdom through the tagline ‘Kediri Berbudaya’ as a destination branding strategy. The approach used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research findings indicate that the tagline “Kediri Berbudaya” serves not only as a regional promotional slogan but has also become a collective symbol that internalises local cultural values into the daily lives of the community. This representation of local wisdom is manifested through visualisation in public spaces, the introduction of traditional regional attire such as Wastra Kediri, Wdihan Kadiri, and Ken Kadiri, and support for interfaith religious activities as concrete expressions of tolerance and social cohesion. The tagline plays a strategic role in strengthening regional identity and fostering a participatory and sustainable cultural narrative amid the tide of modernisation.

Abstract

This study departs from the problem of the blurred boundaries between religion and interpretation, as well as between the sacred and the profane, in line with the development of science. Religion, as something immutable, is often misinterpreted when confronted with human intellectual progress, creating the impression that science competes with or even replaces the role of the sacred. This condition raises a serious question: does religion still have the authority to preserve sacredness, or does science redefine its meaning? The research gap lies in the lack of in-depth studies exploring the dialectical relationship between religion, sacredness, and scientific development. To address this, the study employs a qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach, interpreting religious texts and social phenomena that reflect the shifting meaning of sacred and profane. The findings indicate that sacredness cannot be replaced by science but must serve as the framework for its utilization. The proposed conceptual offer is to reposition science within the corridor of sacredness so that both complement rather than negate each other.

Abstract

In a metropolis like Surabaya, public transportation is a vital component of promoting mobility. The objective of this study is to evaluate the Surabaya City Transportation Agency's initiatives in offering Wira-Wiri public transportation services as a form of public mobility. A qualitative approach is used, with data collected through observation, interviews with Transportation Agency staff and Wira-Wiri passengers, and documentation from numerous sources. According to the study, the Transportation Agency has enhanced its services by adding more fleets, creating and integrating routes between transportation methods, and implementing an integrated ticketing system that is simpler for consumers to use. The primary goal of other policies, such as fair fares and service quality monitoring, is to guarantee passenger comfort and safety. Despite the challenges in tracking implementation, this initiative has greatly improved access to public transportation. This research highlights the need for collaboration between the community, operators, and the government in order to create public transit that is productive, environmentally friendly, and improves the quality of life for Surabaya citizens.
