Abstract

This research examined the effectiveness of the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) technique in enhancing reading comprehension among students at SMP IT Ibnu Sina Merauke in the 2024/2025 academic year. This research employed pre-experimental research with one-group pretest-posttest. The sample was 28 students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. In collecting the data, the researchers used a reading comprehension test in the form of multiple choice. Creating a multiple-choice question (MCQ) test with pre-test and post-test for assessing reading comprehension of narrative texts. The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in students' reading comprehension between the pre-test with the result of mean score was 74.43 and post-test with the result of the mean score was 89.21. Furthermore, the research accepted the alternative hypothesis (H₁): the implementation of the Two Stay Two Stray technique significantly enhances students' reading comprehension skills.  This implies that English teachers should use this technique to enhance the students’ reading comprehension. However, the absence of a control group is a limitation of this research, and future research should address this limitation.

Abstract

A metaphor is a stylistic device used to convey meaning by expressing a concept or idea through a comparison with another, distinct concept or idea. Metaphors implicitly establish a connection between two unrelated elements to provide a deeper understanding of a concept. This article specifically examines hermeneutic paradigms in Javanese plant metaphors by applying Ahimsa-Putra's paradigm theory in cultural studies. The literature review incorporates hermeneutic and metaphorical analyses from various books and journals. The study highlights that Javanese plant metaphors operate based on fundamental principles regarding their function and the way meaning is conveyed. The core principles include the recognition of comparative concepts and the use of figurative language. Metaphors help explain, illustrate, simplify, and reshape perspectives on reality. Their meaning and application vary across different contexts, cultures, and forms of communication, contributing to the clarity and expressiveness of language.

Abstract

The disposal of rubber tires is one of the impacts resulting from the development of activities in the transportation sector. The accumulation of tire waste occurs along with the increase in the number of vehicle owners in society. This study aims to test the compressive strength of concrete with a mixture of rubber powder waste to reduce environmental pollution. The method used is the experimental method in the laboratory with concrete cylinder test specimens measuring 150 mm in diameter and 300 mm in height. The proportion of the rubber powder waste mixture to the fine aggregate was 0%, 30%, and 60%, consisting of three cylindrical test specimens for each variation. The test results show compressive strength values of 26.8 MPa, 19.6 MPa, and 13.1 MPa at rubber powder mixture percentages of 0%, 30%, and 60%. From the data, it can be concluded that rubber powder can be used as a partial substitute for sand in concrete material. The use of rubber powder in concrete reduces the compressive strength of the concrete.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the types, reasons, and pragmatic function (impact) of code-switching and code-mixing on Dedy Corbusier’s podcast. The data are collected by categorizing the transcript according to the types of code. To validate the data, the researcher used triangulation theory. The result is that the dominant type of code-switching is Intra-sentential, with 50 data (21%) of 235 total data. The submissive type of switching is emblematic with 5 data (5%). The dominant type of code-mixing is intra-sentential, with 68 data (29%). The submissive type of mixing is involving a change of pronunciation with 10 data (4%). The dominant reason is talking about a particular topic, with 111 data (47%) serves a referential pragmatic function, and the submissive of the reason is an expression, with 1 data (0,4%); they rarely discussed group identity. Based on the dominant and submissive reason, Deddy’s Podcast facilitates discussions on specific topics, enhancing clarity and comprehension. This strategic use of language may contribute to the podcast’s widespread appeal, evidenced by its 24.3 million subscribers.

Abstract

The mining area in Ternate City is generally a mining business for rock excavation materials, which is found in almost all areas of Ternate city, one of which is in Kalumata Village, South Ternate District. This study investigates land use change in the mining area of Kalumata Village, South Ternate District, from 2014 to 2024, using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Landsat 8 imagery. Mining activities in this area are predominantly carried out by the local community without official permits, leading to uncontrolled land conversion. The study classifies land use into six categories in 2014 and seven in 2024, with the addition of a mining land class. The results show a significant increase in residential areas (28.01 ha) and mixed gardens (3.22 ha), along with the emergence of 5.95 ha of mining land. Conversely, plantation land decreased by 23.24 ha, while forest areas declined by 1.1 ha. These changes are primarily driven by rapid urban development and expanding mining operations. The findings highlight the urgent need for spatial planning and land management strategies to mitigate environmental degradation in Ternate City.

Abstract

This qualitative case study explores how EFL students perceive and utilize Grammarly as a tool to foster grammar correction autonomy. The study involved ten English Education students from UIN Walisongo Semarang and employed interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis to analyze how students edit their work, depend on tools, and think about their own learning. Findings reveal that students view Grammarly as a confidence-boosting aid that enhances grammatical accuracy and encourages independent revision. Many actively combined Grammarly with peer input, grammar resources, and self-review routines, demonstrating emerging learner autonomy. However, challenges such as excessive reliance, vague feedback, and emotional frustration hindered more profound engagement. The study concludes that Grammarly can support grammar autonomy when learners utilize it critically and educators provide reflective guidance, suggesting that students require pedagogy that balances digital support with self-regulated learning.
