Abstract

Reading comprehension remains one of the most essential yet challenging skills for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Traditional reading instruction often emphasizes teacher-centered approaches that limit students’ active involvement in meaning-making. This study investigates the impact of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on enhancing EFL students’ reading comprehension skills, engagement, and strategy use. A quasi-experimental design was employed with two groups of undergraduate EFL learners: an experimental group (n = 35) receiving PBL-based reading instruction and a control group (n = 35) taught through traditional teacher-led methods. Data were collected using a reading comprehension test, an engagement questionnaire, and a reading strategies inventory. Results revealed that the PBL group achieved significantly higher post-test scores than the control group, indicating improved reading comprehension performance. Moreover, PBL fostered greater behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement, alongside the increased use of higher-order reading strategies such as inferencing, summarizing, and critical questioning. These findings suggest that PBL provides a more interactive and meaningful framework for teaching reading, enabling learners to become active participants in constructing textual meaning. The study highlights pedagogical implications for EFL educators, recommending the integration of real-world problems into reading instruction to enhance comprehension outcomes.

Abstract

The increasing demand for sustainable construction has driven the development of green concrete incorporating recycled waste materials. This study investigates the flexural strength of concrete partially substituting fine aggregate with waste tire rubber powder at 0%, 10%, and 30% replacement levels. Concrete beams measuring 150 mm × 150 mm × 600 mm were cast and tested at 28 days using third-point loading in accordance with ASTM C78. The experimental results show that the 10% rubber powder mix achieved the highest flexural strength, with a 52.5% increase compared to the control. In contrast, the 30% mix exhibited a moderate reduction in strength. Despite the slight decline at higher replacement levels, all mixes retained acceptable structural performance and workability without chemical admixtures. The findings suggest that partial substitution of fine aggregate with rubber powder up to 10% can enhance flexural behavior while promoting environmentally friendly concrete solutions.

Abstract

This study investigates the quality of translations of assertive speech acts produced by nursing and midwifery students. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a fixed case study design, the research aims to (1) compare translation quality between the two student groups, (2) analyze differences in translation quality, and (3) identify factors influencing these differences. The data consist of 100 assertive speech acts categorized into convincing (37), conveying (44), and stating (19). Five translation techniques were identified: literal translation, transposition, modulation, reduction, and adaptation. The results show that nursing students obtained a higher overall translation quality score (2.78) than midwifery students (2.54), indicating better accuracy, while translations produced by midwifery students demonstrated higher readability. These findings provide practical implications for translation pedagogy, particularly in designing health-related translation instruction that emphasizes both accuracy and readability in academic contexts.

Abstract

Media convergence has transformed communication patterns and intensified social media engagement among Generation Z (born 1997–2012). This group’s constant connectivity increases their vulnerability to psychological pressure, particularly the fear of missing out (FOMO). This study aims to analyze how TikTok, as a dominant product of media convergence, contributes to the emergence and intensification of FOMO among adolescents. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, involving semi-structured interviews with 12 Generation Z participants and non-participant observation of TikTok usage patterns over a four-week period. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring behavioral and psychological indicators of FOMO. The findings show that TikTok’s algorithmic content flow, rapid trend cycles, and participatory culture significantly trigger FOMO, compelling individuals to frequently check updates, follow trends, and compare themselves with peers. Participants experiencing high FOMO also reported lower life satisfaction, increased anxiety, and difficulties maintaining emotional stability. These conditions were found to hinder aspects of adolescent development, particularly identity formation and autonomy. The study concludes that FOMO represents a critical psychosocial impact of media convergence and underscores the need for digital literacy and mental-health-oriented interventions to help Generation Z navigate online environments more healthily.

Abstract

Family food resilience remains a major challenge in urban areas with limited land availability, causing communities to rely heavily on imported food rather than optimizing household yards through urban farming. Limited technical knowledge further hinders the effective use of small spaces despite the economic and ecological benefits of urban farming. This study examines the role of urban farming in strengthening family food resilience by integrating Islamic values. Using a qualitative approach through a literature review of 24 scientific journals, the analysis was guided by Islamic principles and previous empirical findings. The results show that incorporating Islamic values into urban farming enhances fresh food availability, reduces household expenses, and promotes environmental awareness. These practices align with key Islamic concepts such as khalifah fil ard (stewardship), ishlah (improvement), and tawazun (balance). Overall, Islamic-based urban farming emerges as a promising strategy to promote sustainability, strengthen family food security, and support the welfare of urban communities.

Abstract

This study examined the use of reference as a cohesive device in Hans Christian Andersen’s fictional short story The Little Match Girl. The study aimed to describe the use and functions of referential items that help create continuity and unity throughout the text. The corpus of the story was analyzed through a qualitative descriptive approach based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory of cohesion in English. The analysis identified three main patterns of reference, with personal references occurring most frequently, followed by demonstrative and comparative forms. These three types of reference were used mainly to maintain focus on the main character, to establish spatial relationships, and to express contrast between the girl’s harsh reality and her imagined comfort. The findings indicated that cohesive reference played a central role in shaping the story’s emotional tone and narrative flow, thereby contributing to research on referential cohesion in literary discourse. The study suggests that raising learners’ awareness of referential cohesion can enhance their understanding of how meaning and continuity are constructed in written texts.

Abstract

This study explores the use of slang within the K-Pop community on the social media accounts of @soohyunk216 on Instagram and TikTok. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the researchers analyzed 63 data points of slang expressions collected from comments between September and October 2024. The study classifies slang usage based on Bloomfield’s (1933) four forms of slang; abbreviations, funny mispronunciations, shortened forms, as well as interjections and examines their social functions through Eble’s (2006) framework. Findings reveal that slang is predominantly used to shorten writing, express communal support and identity, convey humor, and implement euphemized or sarcastic language including hate speech. This research confirms the dynamic role of slang in digital fan communities, reflecting both linguistic creativity and social bonding. The results contribute to sociolinguistic understanding of online language variation and offer valuable insights for intercultural communication and translation studies involving multilingual digital communities.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic and semiotic strategies employed by indie publishers on social media to construct branding identities within the digital literacy ecosystem. Using qualitative discourse analysis, digital linguistics, and multimodal semiotics, the study analyzes 15 social media posts across Instagram, TikTok, Twitter (X), Facebook, and official websites. The findings identify five recurring linguistic strategies: emotional micro-narratives, conversational positioning, multimodal linguistic framing, community-aligned hashtagging, and metaphorical semiotic branding. Collectively, these strategies position indie publishers as humanistic, approachable, and literacy-oriented actors despite limited marketing resources. This study contributes theoretical insight into how small cultural agents construct visibility, identity, and relational engagement through language in competitive digital spaces.

Abstract

This study examines affective identity and relational asymmetry in contemporary Indonesian pop song lyrics from a discourse linguistic perspective. Drawing on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), affective linguistics, and stance theory, the article analyzes Sedia Aku Sebelum Hujan by Idgitaf as a site of affective meaning-making in popular culture. Using qualitative discourse analysis, the study focuses on micro-linguistic features such as pronominal patterns, modalization, metaphorical framing, repetition, and narrative positioning. The findings show that affective identity is constructed through consistent first-person agency (aku) and anticipatory emotional readiness, while the addressee (kau) is positioned as passive. This configuration produces a structurally asymmetrical relational pattern. Metaphors of rain, preparation, and struggle frame emotional devotion as moral responsibility, whereas modal expressions normalize emotional sacrifice as inevitable rather than negotiable. Repetition functions as an affective anchoring strategy that stabilizes and legitimizes unequal emotional labor. This study contributes to linguistic scholarship by demonstrating how affect and power intersect in intimate, non-institutional discourse. By integrating affective linguistics with CDA and applying it to Indonesian popular music, the research highlights song lyrics as influential discursive sites where cultural norms of love, care, and sacrifice are produced and circulated.

Abstract

This study investigates how Generation Z constructs and uses initialisms in Twitter (X), focusing on their morphological patterns and communicative functions. While previous studies have highlighted the social meanings of abbreviations in digital discourse, limited attention has been given to the systematic morphological structures underlying initialism formation and their functional roles within a single platform-specific context. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the data were collected through purposive sampling of publicly accessible Gen Z tweets posted between October and December 2025. Screenshots of posts containing initialisms were documented and analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal 85 distinct initialisms, classified into Non-Elliptical (68 forms), Elliptical (12 forms), and Non-Alphabetic (6 forms). Non-elliptical forms dominate, reflecting Gen Z’s reliance on fully abbreviated, letter-by-letter constructions that support rapid processing and platform efficiency. Across all categories, initialisms serve key communicative functions, operating as pragmatic tools for stance-taking, emotional signaling, identity construction, boundary marking, and interaction management that strengthen in-group belonging and facilitate high-speed digital interaction. This study contributes to contemporary discussions on digital morphology and Gen Z sociolinguistics by showing how compressed linguistic forms evolve in response to platform constraints and social dynamics. The implications highlight the need to recognize initialisms as a central component of emerging internet-mediated language change.
