Abstract

Up to now the results of teaching and learning process related to the students’ engagement and readiness to study as perceived by junior high school students have not been satisfying yet. The students’ engagement and  readiness are not considered as important elements before going through the lesson.  Students are mostly considered as empty vessels who are ready to be filled with knowledge by English teachers. As a matter of fact, students need encouraging since at the beginning of the lesson in order to  achieve their maximum capacity in learning. Regarding with those important elements, there is an interesting teaching sequence namely E-S-A teaching sequence proposed by Harmer (2007) which can create a very interesting and succesful teaching and learning process. This  paper therefore discusses the application of E-S-A teaching sequence which includes the students’ engagement during the teaching learning process, and the kinds of E-S-A teaching sequences for teaching junior high school students. The engagement indicators indentified five criteria such as body language, consistent focus, verbal participation, student’s confidence, fun and excitement.  The data were taken from the two English teachers as the subjects of this study. The two English teachers’ performance towards the application of E-S-A teaching sequence were analyzed and compared. The result of this study presents the students’ engagement during the teaching and learning process and various kinds of E-S-A teaching sequence which were employed by English teachers to teach students as appropriate.

Abstract

MSMEs are productive economic businesses owned by individuals and/or individual business entities that have become the economic support of the Indonesian people. However, the development of MSMEs is considered not optimal for the expansion of the market for selling MSME products to the international community, especially MSME products of Jadah Tempe Kaliurang, Sleman, Yogyakarta. This community service program is aimed to answer the main problems of Jadah Tempe Kaliurang MSME product activists, namely the lack of ability to introduce and promote their products to consumers from abroad through English both oral and written and their lack of understanding of legal procedures for food products to be suitable for consumption by the international community. The method in this program is the delivery of materials by two service executors who review material related to legal procedures for food products by the first service and material on persuasive English by the second service. Furthermore, all participants were accompanied to apply persuasive English communication. From this service activity, it was found that people increasingly understand the legal procedures of food products and can communicate using persuasive English to reach the international community market.

Abstract

Teaching English is one of the mandatory subjects at junior and senior high school levels in Indonesia. However, the practice of teaching English subjects in elementary schools has not been implemented uniformly. English is taught as a local subject in some schools, although in others it is a compulsory subject. As happened in the Dukuh Genjeng area, Karakan Village, Weru District, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java. Many elementary schools in the regions have not implemented English as a compulsory subject, so this has an impact on the knowledge, understanding and motivation of elementary school children to learn English.  This service activity aims to provide English literacy education and motivation to learn English to participants in service activities at Rumah Baca Mutiara Hati who are local elementary school students using the Flashcard method which is packaged with a fun game and involving one native speaker who speaks English as an introduction to interactive interaction. directly with the International Community. The method in this training is the delivery of material by two service providers who explain the first service provider's English vocabulary material and the application of Flashcards by the second service provider together with a Native Speaker. From this service activity, it was found that participants increased their knowledge of English Vocabulary and their motivation to learn more about English. Furthermore, participants also felt they had better self-confidence when interacting with the international community, such as interacting with natives who took part in this service activity, where participants were not embarrassed to ask questions and provide responses when communicating with natives who were part of the international community.

Abstract

Amid escalating global environmental crises, environmental images in movies play an indispensable role in shaping public consciousness and attitudes toward ecological challenges. This study investigates the portrayal of environmental ethics in the film Don’t Look Up (2021) through Kerafian ethical analysis. As environmental degradation intensifies, cinematic media emerges as a pivotal force in fostering awareness and influencing public perceptions. A qualitative content analysis was conducted, analyzing key scenes and dialogues to identify and interpret ethical themes in the film, guided by the theoretical constructs from Keraf (2010) to extract and categorize ethical themes. Through the analysis of key scenes and dialogues, the study elucidates how these principles manifest, offering a critique of humanity’s inadequate response to ecological threats. Data were collected through a systematic examination of the film’s narrative, focusing on the integration of core ethical principles, including responsibility, cosmic solidarity, compassion for nature, justice, and democracy (Keraf, 2010). The findings reveal that the film emphasizes collective action, moral accountability, and the urgency of environmental preservation, while simultaneously critiquing political inertia and self-interest. The study underscores the potential of cinematic media to enhance environmental awareness and mobilize public attitudes, positioning Don’t Look Up as a compelling narrative that critiques humanity’s inadequate response to ecological threats

Abstract

This study applied experimental research with a quantitative approach to investigate the effectiveness of graphic organizer (GO) to enhance reading comprehension of EFL learners with good and poor reading habits. The study involved EFL learners from Duta Bangsa University in Indonesia. The samples were taken from two classes, the first was control group and the second was experimental group. Data collection in this study was conducted by using tests (including pre-tests and post-tests). The analysis of statistics was aimed to determine the mean, frequency, total score, standard deviation, and percentage. The pre-test values for the experimental group with good reading habits and poor reading habits were 55.17 and 43.41 respectively, while the post-test values for the experimental group with good reading habit were 79.88 and 61.23 for the poor reading habit. The average scores revealed that the experimental group, taught by using the GO strategy, outperformed the control group which received conventional way. Thus, it could be concluded that the GOs strategy significantly improved students' reading comprehension. This was evidenced by the experimental group's average score of 75.64 compared to the control group's average score of 62.44. The mean value of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, and the t-test value was 4.241, with a 2-tailed significance of 0.001. This suggests that the GO strategy can be effectively integrated into teaching reading instruction of EFL learners to accelerate their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of peer teaching in reducing public speaking anxiety among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Public speaking anxiety is a prevalent issue among EFL learners, hindering their language development and performance. This research employs an evaluative survey design to assess the impact of peer teaching on public speaking anxiety among 67 EFL students. The results show a statistically significant reduction in public speaking anxiety after participating in peer teaching sessions, with a mean anxiety score decreasing from 64.23 to 54.44. The qualitative data further supports the quantitative findings, indicating that peer teaching fosters a collaborative learning environment, reduces fear of judgment, and provides constructive feedback, leading to increased confidence and reduced anxiety. The study highlights the pedagogical value of peer teaching in EFL classrooms, suggesting that it can be a useful tool in addressing public speaking anxiety and improving language learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study discusses representative speech acts in digital comic discourse created by Mohammed Arif Vakil and Mohammed Ali Vakil reflecting the religious moderation among societies. The comic discourse campaigns for the importance of tolerance between human beings. The analysis focuses on the reflection of religious moderation in one chapter entitled ‘Ethic’ which describes the relation among human beings. The chapter is chosen due to its message which focuses on relation among people. The data of this research were obtained from the whole texts and pictures in the chapter. The texts in the comic became the main data whereas the images were put as secondary data. These data were then processed and classified into several speech act classifications proposed by Searle. The result shows that the most dominant speech act performed by the comic maker is representative speech acts. Meanwhile the directive speech acts are commonly used to give the direct moral lessons. The chapter reflects religious moderation in three points i.e. (1) applying good attitudes to others; (2) reflecting the moral value; (3) helping others without hurting the feelings by applying the representative and directive speech acts to convey the religious moderation. The representative speech acts function as the utterances of giving statement and admitting about something related with good deeds and never hurting others while the directive speech acts functions as the utterances of requesting, asking, and recommending certain things. The directive speech acts take the roles as the directive meanings on moral values.
