Abstract

Comparative studies on local Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia remain limited, even though such works reflect the distinctive intellectual dynamics of Nusantara Islam. Tafsir Rahmat by Oemar Bakry and Rangkaian Cerita dalam Al-Qur’an by Bey Arifin are two local interpretations written by scholars from similar backgrounds and periods but exhibiting significant methodological differences. Both were composed to address the needs of Indonesian readers for accessible and socially relevant understandings of the Qur’an. This study aims to analyze and compare their interpretative methodologies using a qualitative method and comparative analysis through library research. The findings show that Oemar Bakry emphasizes systematic structure and linguistic clarity to prevent misinterpretation of the Qur’anic text, whereas Bey Arifin employs a narrative approach that explores ethical and spiritual wisdom from Qur’anic stories. This research enriches Indonesian Qur’anic studies through two distinct yet complementary models of local exegesis: textual-rational and contextual-narrative.

Abstract

This study examines the polemics over the identity and characteristics of Abd al-Rauf al-Singkili's Nusantara tafsir book, Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d. Which many consider that this tafsir book is a duplication and translation of previously existing tafsir books, such as Tafsir Jalālayn, Tafsir al-Khāzin, and Tafsir al-Baydawi. This research is explored through a qualitative method with a Library Research approach. Because the sources used are primary literature in the form of Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d and supported by secondary literature from books, journal articles, and so on. The results of this study found evidence that the book of Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d is an original book of interpretation and adaptive application. And the assumptions and accusations of orientalists against Tafsi>r Tarjuma>n al-Mustafi>d are unfounded.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation and transformation of the Sadranan tradition as an effort to preserve Javanese cultural heritage in the contemporary era. The tradition faces challenges due to lifestyle changes, population mobility, and the influence of global culture, which reduce young people’s attention to traditional values. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using literature study methods, analyzed through the perspectives of cultural anthropology and cultural functionalism theory. The findings reveal that the Sadranan tradition has undergone symbolic and procedural simplifications, such as shorter rituals, translated prayers into Indonesian, and reduced offerings, while maintaining its spiritual and social essence. These adaptations demonstrate the ability of Javanese society to sustain communal solidarity, ancestral reverence, and Islamic spirituality through cultural transformation. The novelty of this study lies in interpreting Sadranan as a dynamic form of local cultural adaptation that preserves both spiritual and social continuity amid modernization.

Abstract

Every society in the world has certain celebrations to commemorate the cycle of human life. One of the celebrations that exist is a celebration devoted to children. The Javanese have a tedhak siten celebration to commemorate a child setting foot on the ground for the first time at the age of 7-8 months. The Japanese have Shici-Go-San celebrations to commemorate children at the age of 3, 5 and 7. The purpose of this paper is to compare the similarities and differences between tedhak siten in Java and Shici-Go-San in Japan, a celebration that is equally devoted to children. The method used is a qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of literature study by reviewing books, journals and related articles. The theories used are transitional theory and symbolic theory. As a result, the similarity of these two celebrations is a celebration that contains prayers and hopes for the child's future by performing certain procedures and serving special foods that are full of meaning. The difference is that tedhak siten is done when the child is 7-8 months old in Javanese kalen-der held at home while Shici-Go-San is celebrated on November 15 for children aged 3, 5, and 7 at the temple.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the author's interest in Sego Langgi, which is the favorite iftar menu of Sunan Sendang during fasting. The author feels that the selection of Sego Langgi as the breaking fast menu must have reasons, meanings, and philosophy. To understand the Sufistic meaning contained in Sego Langgi, the author conducted research titled "The Sufistic Meaning of Sego Langgi in the Haul Process of Mbah Raden Nur Rachmat Sunan Sendang" using qualitative research methods. The data sources in the research were obtained through interviews and documentation or the utilization of existing documents. This research produces a novelty in the realm of Nusantara Sufism scholarship in the form of the Sufi meaning contained in Sego Langgi. Sego Langgi is the favorite iftar menu of Sunan Sendang, rich in values of simplicity and asceticism. Sego Langgi has a Sufi meaning of controlling desires. In Sufism, fasting, which includes breaking the fast and pre-dawn meals, by abstaining from living things, is effective in subduing, controlling, and managing desires.

Abstract

This study examines the synergy between fiqh and Sufism in shaping the harmony of sharia and spiritual values through the activities of the As-Sa’adah Sholawat Council in Sidoarjo, East Java. The study highlights how local Islamic traditions sustain both legal and mystical dimensions of religious life in contemporary Javanese Muslim communities. Using a qualitative method with a case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving council members and religious leaders. The analysis employed the Miles and Huberman model with triangulation to ensure validity. The findings reveal that the As-Sa’adah Council integrates fiqh and Sufism through communal prayers, tawasul, tahlil, and sholawat, balancing external discipline (sharia) with inner spirituality (haqiqat). This harmony reflects the Javanese concept of laku, where religious practice becomes a path toward ethical refinement and divine closeness.
