International Research Journal of Business Studies (IRJBS) comprises three constructs. The word “International” refers to our mission to provide readers with relevant fields of study and to involve authors in giving their contributions on an international scale. ”Research Journal” refers to our aim to function as a medium to disseminate research findings regardless of methodological differences. ”Business Studies” refers to the boundary of the fields of studies that we serve i.e. encompassing all disciplines and paradigms related to the studies of any facet of the business. Aim The primary objective of IRJBS is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the area of business studies by presenting the results of an empirical study, including rigorous research methods, and providing managerial implications to the readers. Scope The IRJBS welcomes manuscripts in business management, which include the areas of strategic management, marketing management, finance management, organization, human resources management, and operations management. Starting Volume 13, Number 2 (2020), IRJBS publishes high-quality articles/papers using rigorous research with questions, evidence, and conclusions that are related to corporate management studies and recent trends that are relevant to business management scholars and business practitioners. More specifically, the IRJBS seeks to publish papers that ask and help to answer important and interesting questions in managing the corporation, develop and/or test theory, replicate prior studies, explore interesting phenomena, review and synthesize existing research, and evaluate the many methodologies used in the corporate management field. We welcome manuscripts in corporations within one geographic and/or across the geographic and business spectrum which include but are not limited to corporate strategy, corporate governance, corporate organization, and human capital, corporate finance, corporate marketing, and the operations aspect of the corporation. We appreciate a diverse range of research methods and are open to papers that rely on statistical inference, qualitative data, verbal theory, computational models, and mathematical models

Abstract

The rise of consumer communities leads the author to conduct this research. ‘Traditional’ approach views consumer community as a solid, stable, and homogeneous entity. However, using postmodernism approach, the author can spot identities in a consumer community. The exploration is done by participative observation through fashion marketing. It is found that there are four identities in the community, there are : 1) individual-culture identity (nature based), 2) collective-culture identity (future based), 3) temporary-structure identity (discussion based), and 4) permanent-structure identity (instruction based). Implication for marketer is also discussed at the end of this article.

Abstract

Nowadays we are facing a new phenomenon “suddenly emerged” consumer community in Indonesia. For a particular reason this emergence of community should be interesting because their existence give benefit to brand owners. It creates customers’ loyalty and commitment to the brand. Unfortunately, many brand owners are still not aware about the existence of consumer community. A new perspective is needed to bridge the gap between the brand owners and the community. To have a better relationship with the community, brand owners should understand the “face of community’s consumption”. This article describes activities that brand owners should do in developing such community. It is found that there is a dynamic of “test the water” relationship model between brand owners and the community. Brand owners should pay more attention to build a strong and long term relationship with the community as their strategy in order to gain sustainable benefit from this kind of relation.

Abstract

This article explores determinant of capital structure in Indonesia. Empirical study using Regression in model is done by including variable suggested by Trade of Theory, Pecking Order Theory, and combination of those theories. The result shows that determinant factors in the Trade of Theory have more ability to explain the capital structure than deficit cash flow factor in pecking order theory. Other variables that are also significant are firm size and collateral capacity. Its is possible that rejection of Pecking Order Theory is due to market timing argument in long term financing.

Abstract

Adverse Events (AEs), which are also known as the unexpected events, can happen in any hospital, and can cause dangerous impacts on patients’ life. In Indonesia, empirical research on AEs is still limited in number therefore there are a lot of AEs which are not identified and analyzed. In fact, a great number of AEs can be prevented through the implementation of safety culture, safety system and information technology. It is now the time for hospitals and health centres to apply patient-safety culture more effectively. This article discusses the role and essence of patient-safety culture in minimizing the total number of AEs. Hospitals and health centres are encouraged to manage their corporate culture change into the direction of applying the safety culture appropriately in order to provide a positive impact on the patient life and hospitals’ image. Eventually, an integrative model which links the patient safety culture with the hospital performance is provided.

Abstract

This paper reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on the corporate governance in family controlled firms. In particular, it discusses conflicts of interest between owner and manager (referred to as Agency Problem I) as well as between minority and large shareholders (referred to as Agency Problem II) among family firms under agency theory framework. It is widely believed that families are better monitors of managers than other types of large shareholders, suggesting that Agency Problem I are less prevalent in family than in non-family firms. On the other hand, it is also argued that controlling families may extract private benefits at the expense of minority shareholders. In addition, the governance literature indicates that several conventional governance tools for controlling Agency Problem are less effective in dealing with Agency Problem II. This implies that other internally determined governance mechanisms such as boards of directors may play a more significant and effective role in controlling Agency Problem II in family firms.

Abstract

The finance functions have experienced evolutionary renewal. However, these events have not yet studied intensively. This study explores the ability of companies to perform new finance function as a business partnership function which focus on stock market communication. While this is an important evolving function, the study found that listed companies in Indonesian Stock Exchange have not performed the ability well enough yet. The study uses data from Indonesian Stock Exchange for the period 2006-2007. On average, investors did not give significant reward to information about the growth performance of the corresponding listed companies. The author suggests that a renewal of finance function of Indonesian companies is required.

Abstract

The financial crisis of the 1997 can be considered as an important “wakeup-call” for Indonesian businesses. Before the crisis, business systems were maintained poorly as indicated by widespread of corruption and unfair business practices. Many observers claimed that this kind of business habits became one of important factors that trigger the crisis. Interestingly, unlike big companies related to conglomeration, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) survived during this difficult time. Several factors might be responsible to this phenomenon: flexibility, informality, communality and responsiveness. In post-crisis period, businesses in Indonesia should restructure their systems and behavior by adopting some basic principles of small business while strengthening their corporate governance. Partnership with SMEs is one of the best strategies to do that in this new era.

Abstract

This study explores new variables that support strategic creativity in marketing according to Menon et al. (1999). Those variables are: reward, individual performance, and team work effect. Therefore, there are four hypotheses that are tested in this research. Firstly, the higher the strategic creativity, the higher the marketing peformance. Secondly, the higher the reward, the higher the strategic creativity. Thirdly, the higher the individual performance, the higher the strategic creativity. And lastly, the higher the team perfomance, the higher the strategic creativity. Multiple regression analysis is used to test the hypotheses using inputs from fifty respondens. The result shows that those hypotheses can be accepted. Managerial implications correspond to the result are discussed at the end of this article.

Abstract

One of the key challenges in financial distress resolution is to find the way to renegotiate the debts. Financial troubled firms may apply either court or out-of-court resolution process. Under court supervision, firms have to follow Indonesian bankruptcy law which offers a moratorium on debt repayment through a system of court supervision and liquidation proceedings. Alternatively, firms may apply out-of-court workout. This paper is written to examine process of both resolutions, problem in executing the law and the reasons for least likelihood of filing court solution in Indonesia. In addition, it shows study on bankruptcy filing in East Asia countries.

Abstract

Many researchers have reported that there is a correlation between a company’s environmental performances with its financial performance. The role of criteria pertaining to sustainability and environmental orientation could play important roles in credit risk management process. The sustainability criteria can be used to predict financial performance of a debtor and, thus, improve predictive ability of a credit rating process. This article tests the relationship by using three sustainability measures as independent variables and traditional rating as dependent variable in a stepwise regression model. The result shows improvement in prediction. However, the use of additional criteria will increase cost in the prediction process. Further cost-benefit analysis related to the addition of those criteria would be valuable for credit risk management practices.
