Abstract

Tahsinul Qur'an is the skill of reading the Qur'an correctly according to the law of tajweed, while maharah qira'ah is the ability to read and understand Arabic texts. Both have similarities in reading texts that are both in Arabic. This study aims to analyze the relationship between tahsinul qur'an and maharah qira'ah in female students of the book class of the Ma'arif Nahdhotul Ulama Metro Islamic Boarding School, Lampung. The focus of this study is motivated by the imbalance of ability between the reading of the Qur'an tartly and the ability to read and understand general Arabic texts. This study uses a quantitative approach with an associative correlation method. Data was obtained through tests, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using SPSS version 25 software. The research sample amounted to 39 students who were selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The results showed a correlation value of 0.159 with a significance of 0.334 > 0.05, which means that there is no significant relationship between the tahsinul of the Qur'an and maharah qira'ah. This is due to the difference in focus between the two; The tahsinul of the Qur'an emphasizes the phonetic and tajweed aspects, while the maharah qira'ah focuses on the rules of nahwu, shorof, and understanding of meaning.

Abstract

Reading skills (al-Qirā’ah) constitute one of the principal pillars in mastering the Arabic language, especially within the context of higher education, which requires students to understand various types of texts critically and analytically. Numerous studies affirm that text comprehension ability is influenced by linguistic, cognitive, and pedagogical factors, as well as appropriate learning strategies. At the university level, reading instruction cannot merely emphasize basic linguistic aspects; rather, it must integrate academic competencies such as discourse analysis and critical comprehension. This aligns with the views of Carrell and Grabe, who emphasize that reading in a foreign language requires the activation of schemata along with the simultaneous application of top-down and bottom-up strategies. In Arabic language learning, al-qirā’ah is not only understood as the technical ability to pronounce letters and words, but as a complex linguistic and cognitive process. This process involves the ability to understand grammatical structures, lexical meanings, pragmatic contexts, and the capacity to connect textual information with the reader’s prior knowledge. This article aims to provide a comprehensive conceptual analysis of al-Qirā’ah in Arabic language instruction at the university level, with particular attention to foundational reading theories, pedagogical approaches, and the practical challenges encountered in implementation. Universities generally employ intensive reading methods (Qirā’ah Jahrīyah / Qirā’ah Mukhassah) to enhance text analysis, as well as extensive reading to expand vocabulary and discourse comprehension. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method through a literature review consisting of Arabic linguistics books, modern literacy theories, empirical research findings, and scholarly journals on language education. The analysis reveals that the concept of al-qirā’ah encompasses three primary dimensions: (1) mechanical reading skills, including phonetic accuracy, reading fluency, and mastery of tajwīd rules when required; (2) comprehension skills, which include literal, inferential, evaluative, and applicative understanding of texts; and (3) interpretative and critical abilities, which are highly essential in academic settings. Research findings also indicate that universities typically emphasize intensive reading (Qirā’ah Mukhassafah) to train analytical reading skills, and extensive reading to broaden vocabulary and discourse mastery. Moreover, the integration of technology such as digital platforms, electronic dictionaries, interactive learning applications, and online text repositories greatly supports students in developing al-Qirā’ah independently. Student-centered learning approaches, scaffolding strategies, and project-based learning are also recommended as effective pedagogical practices in teaching al-Qirā’ah in modern higher education. Reading assessment is conducted not only through written examinations but also through portfolio evaluation, discourse analysis tasks, and academic presentations based on Arabic texts. Overall, this article is expected to contribute theoretically and practically to the development of more effective pedagogical models for teaching al-Qirā’ah in higher education. With a deeper conceptual understanding and the application of appropriate methodologies, Arabic reading instruction can become more adaptive, relevant, and responsive to the academic literacy needs of students in the modern era.

Abstract

Mastery of reading skills (maharah qirā’ah) at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) level is often hindered by motivational barriers, difficulties in understanding language structures, and pedagogical boredom. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of three learning methods SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review), Qowaid wa Tarjamah (Grammar-Translation Method), and PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review) in improving students' reading competencies. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, analyzing data from three relevant classroom action research studies. The results indicate three distinct but complementary patterns of success: (1) The SQ3R method proves effective in engineering reading interest and transforming passive students into active learners through systematic inquiry; (2) The Qowaid wa Tarjamah method shows strong relevance in strengthening students' grammatical foundations, achieving a mastery level of up to 100%; and (3) The PQ4R method effectively enhances deep understanding and memory retention through the reflection element, marked by a drastic increase in mastery from 20% to 95%. This study concludes that educators need to apply an eclectic approach by selecting adaptive methods according to the diagnosis of student problems, whether they are psychological, structural, or cognitive. Based on the analysis of the spike in learning outcomes that occurred in the three maharah qiroah methods, the most effective method in the context of drastic improvement is the PQ4R Method (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review). Because, this method produces the most extreme increase in performance compared to other methods.
