Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world's megabiodiverse countries due to its tropical climate and diverse geographic landscape. One of the species widely distributed in Indonesia is Polypedates leucomystax. Imogiri Nature Reserve and Merapi Valley represent two locations with contrasting altitudes, which ultimately drive adaptive responses and cause morphometric variation among P. leucomystax populations inhabiting the two areas. The aim of this study was to analyze the morphometric variations of P. leucomystax frogs in the Imogiri Nature Reserve and Merapi Valley and also to analyze the relationship between abiotic factors and differentiated morphometric characters. Morphometric character data were tested using the Mann-Whitney test (p≤0.05), followed by the Spearman correlation test was conducted with abiotic factors. The morphometric characters that differed significantly in males were STL, NS, EN, MBE, THIGHL, and MTI, whereas in females the significant characters were NS, MFE, MBE, IOD, UEW, and 1TL. In addition, temperature, humidity and altitude also have a correlation with the differentiated characters. In male frogs, altitude correlated with the characters EN, MBE, THIGHL, MTI and temperature correlated with MBE, THIGHL, MTI, while in female frogs altitude correlated with the characters NS, MFE, MBE, IOD, UEW, 1TL and temperature correlated with NS, MFE, MBE, IOD. Then humidity correlated with UEW. The conclusion of this study is that there are 6 variations in morphometric characters in male frogs and 6 characters in female frogs found in Merapi Valley and the Imogiri Nature Reserve. Furthermore, abiotic factors are also associated with differentiated morphometric traits.

Abstract

Intercropping systems, an ecological engineering strategy, have the potential to increase the abundance of parasitoid Hymenoptera in agroecosystems. This study aimed to analyze the diversity, relative abundance, and composition of parasitoid Hymenoptera in different intercropping systems of cayenne pepper and peanuts, based on differences in the peanut plant composition. The study was conducted using a randomized block design (RBD) with four treatments and five replicates. Sampling was performed using yellow pan traps and pitfall traps. Data were analyzed using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), evenness (E), dominance (D), and species richness (R). The results show that the parasitoid Hymenoptera community consisted of 79 individuals belonging to 12 families and 29 morphospecies. The highest relative abundance was found in Trichopria spp. (24 individuals; 30.37%). The Diapriidae family was the most abundant, with 33 individuals (41.77%). The TS2 treatment (ratio 1:3) resulted in the highest diversity (H' = 2.36) and species richness (R = 4.84). However, ANOVA indicated that neither parasitoid abundance (F3,12 = 2.599; P > 0.05) nor morphospecies richness (F3,12 = 3.207; P > 0.05) differed significantly among treatments. These findings suggest that cayenne pepper–peanut intercropping may support parasitoid communities, although the effects of different peanut proportions require further investigation under broader ecological conditions.

Abstract

The Bangkahulu River is one of the main rivers that is very important in Bengkulu Province, which is currently facing significant human-induced pressures. This study aims to evaluate the water quality of the Bangkahulu River, as well as to isolate, characterize, and profile the hemolytic Escherichia coli isolated from the upstream to downstream areas. Water samples were taken from five stations using a purposive sampling method. Physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters were analyzed according to the Indonesian national standards (SNI), while E. coli was isolated and identified through morphological characterization, Gram staining, and biochemical tests. Hemolytic activity of the isolates was tested on blood agar. The results showed that Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) exceeded the Class I water quality standards as regulated by Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021. The Pollution Index values range from 2.15 to 6.32, indicating a light to moderate level of contamination. Out of 35 identified E. coli isolates, 18 showed ß-hemolytic activity, 12 showed γ-hemolytic activity, and 2 had hemolytic activity. The prevalence of ß-hemolytic isolates suggests the presence of potentially active phenotypic strains in the aquatic environment. The dominance of β-hemolytic isolates points to strains with phenotypic traits related to potential virulence, although hemolytic activity alone is not enough to determine pathogenicity. This finding provides basic information about the physical and chemical pollution levels of the Bangkahulu River and serves as a foundation for further knowledge and research on the importance of continuously monitoring water quality and implementing effective pollution control strategies to reduce potential public health risks from microbial contamination and physical and chemical pollution, ensuring the sustainable use of river water resources.

Abstract

Riparian vegetation has high potential for carbon absorption and storage. The study aimed at exploring thestudy the potential of riparian vegetation in reducing carbon from the transportation sector. The study was conducted at Boyong River and its triburatory Trasi River from February - March 2026. Location selection was carried out purposively in open and closed canopy areas. Vegetation data were collected using square belt plots, CO2 emissions estimated with traffic counts, and carbon storage estimated with allometric equations (trees) and destructive sampling (herbs). Data were analyzed to obtain IVI, H’, and E indices, and the correlations among variables using Canonical Correspondence Analysis ( CCA).The results show that closed areas are dominated by trees, particularly Cocos nucifera, Leucaena leucocephala, and Swietenia macrophylla. Open areas are dominated by herb, especially Mimosa pudica, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and Typhonium blumei. Transportation emissions were higher on weekends then weekdays. The percentage of CO2 absorption in closed areas (21.65% and 27.95%) was higher than in open areas (2.01% and 16.12%). Carbon storage in trees was greater in closed areas, while herbaceous carbon storage was greater in open areas. The CCA analysis indicated that closed areas are associated with the stability of tree and shrub communities, higher tree carbon storage, and lower temperatures. Meanwhile, open areas are associated with herb community stability, higher herb carbon storage, and higher temperatures. In conclusion, closed areas have greater support for carbon absorption and storage then open areas.
