Abstract

This study evaluates anemia prevention and control measures among adolescent girls in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, where anemia remains a pressing public health issue. Conducted from March to June 2024 in junior and senior high schools in Donggala and Poso, the cross-sectional study surveyed 384 girls using a structured questionnaire. Ethical approval was granted, and informed consent was obtained from participants. The study revealed a prevalence of anemia at 54.71%, with 79.43% of affected girls reporting iron supplement intake. Significant factors associated with anemia included daily consumption of fortified wheat flour (p = 0.010, PR 1.75), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) (p = 0.011, PR 1.74), and negative attitudes toward anemia prevention (p = 0.043, PR 1.54). Despite the high percentage of girls taking iron supplements, anemia remains prevalent, indicating gaps in current prevention efforts. The findings highlight the need for enhanced food fortification, better nutritional monitoring, and educational initiatives to shift attitudes and behaviors. Future research should investigate the long-term effectiveness of these interventions to improve public health outcomes.

Abstract

Patients with chronic diseases like breast cancer experience psychological, biological, social, and spiritual changes or imbalances. Positive psychological well-being does not emerge automatically in breast cancer patients. Many factors influence psychological well-being in these individuals, and their psychological responses and transitions are subjective and rooted in personal experience. This study aimed to identify the psychological well-being of breast cancer patients in Surabaya. The design of this study is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The study included eight participants who met the research inclusion criteria. Data were collected using an in-depth interview technique. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was carried out on the data analysis. The results of this study obtained seven themes, namely loss response, psychological response, relationship with others, decision making, utilization of health services, hope, and self-adjustment. A person diagnosed with breast cancer requires a transition process to achieve comfort with a new situation. This transition process begins with a type of transition in the form of a diagnosis of breast cancer, and transition conditions that may facilitate or inhibit the transition process. These breast cancer patient response patterns are the way patients self-manage in making changes and outcome indicators in the form of positive psychological well-being. Nurses play a crucial role in promoting patients' psychological well-being by regularly performing mental health assessments, attentively listening to emotional concerns, recognizing spiritual needs,

Abstract

In 2020, the Indonesian Ministry of Health reported that only 35% of 119,665 post-hospital care patients returned to follow-up on their condition and one of the influencing factors is the implementation of discharge planning which has not yet been optimized. The implementation of discharge planning requires high motivation from a nurse to achieve a good result. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nurse motivation and implementation of discharge planning in patients with diabetes. This is a quantitative analytical cross-sectional study. The population in this study was all executive nurses, totaling 71 respondents in the internal medicine and surgical inpatient rooms of Government Hospitals in Kutai Kartanegara. The sampling method used was total sampling. The instruments used were nurse motivation questionnaires and discharge planning. Majority of the respondents were female (67.6%), aged ≥ 25 (70.4%) with a bachelor’s degree in nursing (64.8%) an a lenght of work ≥5 years (78.9%). There was a relationship between nurse motivation and the implementation of discharge planning in DM patients with p-value 0.001 (AOR: 9.6 (95% CI: 3–31)) after adjusting for length of work, education level, and age. This study proves that high nurse motivation affects the implementation of discharge planning in patients with Diabetes Mellitus.

Abstract

Degenerative diseases, particularly diabetes mellitus and hypertension, contribute substantially to morbidity in Indonesia, including rural areas undergoing lifestyle transitions. Kalukku Subdistrict in Mamuju Regency is one such region, yet no comprehensive studies have examined the relationship between lifestyle, diet, and nutritional status with these diseases. This study aimed to analyze associations between lifestyle, dietary patterns, and nutritional status with the incidence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension in Kalukku Subdistrict. A cross-sectional design was applied to 150 purposively selected patients with diabetes mellitus and hypertension recorded at Tampapadang Health Center. Data were collected using lifestyle questionnaires, 24-hour dietary recalls, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires (SQ-FFQ), and anthropometric measurements. Associations were analyzed using chi-square tests with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Unhealthy lifestyle was strongly associated with diabetes mellitus (p<0.001, OR=12.17) and hypertension (p<0.001, OR=0.016, indicating 98.4% lower risk in individuals with healthy lifestyles). Unhealthy dietary patterns were associated with diabetes mellitus (p=0.040, OR=3.51) but not with hypertension (p=1.00). Nutritional status showed no significant relationship with either condition (p>0.05). Lifestyle is a key determinant of both diabetes mellitus and hypertension, while dietary patterns are associated only with diabetes mellitus. Nutritional status was not significantly linked to either disease. These findings highlight the importance of community-based health promotion and prevention, including daily physical activity through group exercise, dietary modification using local foods (corn, cassava, sweet potatoes) as alternatives to white rice, and salt-reduction campaigns via cooking demonstrations.

Abstract

Waste remains a major environmental health issue in urban areas, requiring comprehensive management efforts that involve government, workers, and the community. In this regard, government accountability—both financial and non-financial—is essential. To ensure effective oversight, performance evaluation through the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) framework becomes crucial. In Mamuju Regency, waste management faces challenges, as only 5.55% of total waste is transported to final disposal sites. This study applies the BSC method to assess waste management performance in Mamuju, focusing on two perspectives: customer satisfaction and learning and growth. Using a quantitative descriptive design, data were collected from 50 residents who utilize household waste collection services and 100 employees directly engaged in operational waste services. Information was obtained through structured questionnaires, operational and financial reports, and supporting documentation from the relevant agency. The analysis covered attributes under the two BSC perspectives. Findings reveal that in the customer perspective—covering service quality, relationships, and institutional image—satisfaction reached the “satisfied” category, indicating good performance. Meanwhile, in the learning and growth perspective, which included employee competence, information system support, motivation, empowerment, and fairness, results showed “highly satisfactory” quality, placing performance in the “excellent” category. The study recommends that the Environmental and Sanitation Office of Mamuju Regency adopt the BSC systematically as a planning and evaluation tool. Local authorities should also design indicators suited to regional conditions, improve infrastructure, enforce the use of protective equipment, and encourage active community participation in waste management.

Abstract

Staying in the hospital for a long period can affect a patient's psychological condition and may cause stress that slows down recovery. Healing Garden Therapy is a hospital program that can help support recovery, especially for patients with non-communicable diseases.  Therefore, this study aims to explore the implementation of the Healing Garden Therapy program in hospitals using assessment model of Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM). This study used a qualitative exploratory design. The participants consisted of two groups: 10 nurses and 8 non-nursing staff who were involved in the implementation of Healing Garden Therapy Program (HGTP), selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using recorded Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and using semi-structured guiding questions. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method and presented using the COREQ checklist. The study found four main themes: 1) The main targets of the Healing Garden Therapy Program are patients, families, and visitors; 2) Delivering holistic care; 3) The Healing Garden program has positive impacts and therefore should be reactivated; 4) The Healing Garden Therapy program needs management supports and nurses involvement. The Healing Garden Therapy program has shown positive impacts and should be implemented to support holistic nursing care in hospitals.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) remain one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas where access to health services may be limited. Vitamin A plays a key role in supporting immune function and maintaining epithelial integrity, which can influence the risk and severity of ARI. This study examined the relationship between vitamin A supplementation and ARI severity among children under five in the service area of Morosi Community Health Center, Konawe District. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from 67 children diagnosed with ARIs in 2022. Vitamin A supplementation data were categorized as low (≤1 dose/year) or adequate (≥2 doses/year), while ARI severity was classified as mild, moderate, or severe based on clinical records. The analysis showed that more than half of the children (55.2%) received low vitamin A supplementation. A significant association was found between vitamin A supplementation and ARI severity (p = 0.007), with mild ARI predominating among children with low supplementation and moderate cases being more common among those with adequate supplementation. These findings highlight the important role of vitamin A supplementation in child health programs. Strengthening routine supplementation, particularly in underserved communities, may help reduce ARI-related morbidity. Further longitudinal or interventional studies are needed to confirm these associations.

Abstract

Preschool children (ages 3–6 years) are in their golden age of development, during which physical and psychological maturity progress rapidly. Fine motor skills are particularly important, as they support later academic abilities such as writing and drawing. This study aimed to determine the effect of coloring stimulation on the fine motor development of preschool children at Aisyiyah Kindergarten, Sungai Alang Branch, Karang Intan. This research employed a quantitative, quasi-experimental design using one group pretest–posttest without a control group. The study involved 18 children in class B. Fine motor development was measured using an observation rubric, and data were analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.  Before the intervention, the mean fine motor score was 3.89 (range 3–5). After five sessions of coloring stimulation, the mean score increased to 10.11 (range 8–12). Statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p-value=0.001, p<0.005), indicating that coloring stimulation had a measurable impact on children’s fine motor development. Coloring stimulation significantly improves preschool children’s fine motor skills. Both teachers and parents are encouraged to provide regular coloring activities as a simple, enjoyable, and effective strategy to optimize children’s developmental outcomes.

Abstract

The sources of DEHP exposure are very wide because it is used as a plasticizer and additive in cosmetics and personal care products. Epidemiological studies have shown that DEHP and its metabolites can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome. However, this observation is still debated. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review aimed to investigate the relationship between DEHP exposure and metabolic syndrome in adults. This study used three databases, namely Pubmed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, with English-language publications from 2019 to 2024. Seven cross-sectional and cohort studies from South Korea, the United States, Mexico, and Taiwan met the inclusion criteria selected through the PRISMA stages They were assessed for quality using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tool. The findings showed that only studies conducted in the United States and South Korea showed a significant association between DEHP and its metabolites (MEHP, MECPP, MCMHP, MEHHP, and MEOHP) with metabolic syndrome. However, these findings were limited to men, white men, premenopausal women, and postmenopausal women. In conclusion, DEHP and its metabolites showed inconsistent results on metabolic syndrome in adults. Recommendations are that further studies are needed with more robust designs in the future in various countries to clearly describe the relationship between DEHP and metabolic syndrome and strong regulation of phthalate use to minimize exposure.
