Abstract

Indonesia is ranked second in the number of Tuberculosis (TB) cases worldwide. TB patients and their families experience a complex burden. Hence, support and strengthening TB medication supervisors (Pengawas Minum Obat/ PMO) role is needed.  The aim of this study was to enhance the Community Health Center (CHC)-based PMOs’ role by improving their knowledge and strengthening peer group support. The method used was an action research cycle with four stages. The diagnosis stage was carried out by consensus decision making group with CHC to determine priority problems, namely the need to increase basic knowledge of TB and its treatment. Optimizing peer group was also necessary, as the Self Reporting Questionnaire-20 showed that more PMOs from patient families have psychological problems than cadres.  The planning stage was conducted by preparing educational sessions and creating educational media. The action stage was a quasi-experimental (without control, non-randomization)—an educational talk show provided by the TB program manager, pulmonologist, and psychiatrist. Peer groups are also activated by triggering shared media education and discussion. At the evaluation stage, knowledge was measured by giving pre and post-tests (n= 21, total sampling). The results of the analysis using the Wilcoxon's Signed Ranks Test showed that participants' knowledge had increased significantly (p=0.000; r=0.59). In conclusion, education can increase PMO knowledge as an initial step to strengthen their role in supporting the success of TB treatment. Innovation, cross-sector assistance, and support are needed to enable the PMO to succeed in the TB program.

Abstract

Hypertension is a national problem in Jambi Province and East Tanjung Jabung Regency. This situation is exacerbated by low regularity of taking medication in East Tanjung Jabung Regency (39.07%), which is far below the national figure of 54.40%. The behavior of taking medication regularly is closely related to a person's adherence to following recommended or prescribed treatment process. In this regard, the study aims to determine effectiveness of video educational media increasing family support and adherence of hypertensive patients to undergo treatment process. Research is quasi-experimental and non-randomized pre-post for control group. The participants were determined by non-probability with 40 people for intervention group and 40 people as controls. The independent sample difference test used Mann-Whitney test and paired sample difference test used Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test. Determine effectiveness of intervention using N-Gain Score test. Results before intervention there was no significant difference between intervention and control groups regarding family support (Asymp. Sig. = 0.853), as well as regard level of adherence (Asymp. Sig. = 0.785). After intervention, there were significant differences regarding family support (Asymp. Sig. = 0.000) and level of adherence (Asymp. Sig. = 0.000). There were significant differences regarding family support and adherence, before and after the intervention, both in intervention and control groups (Asymp. Sig. = 0.000). Video is effective increasing family support (average 47.23%) and compliance (average 53.07%), with moderate effectiveness. The Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the larger sample sizes, longer follow-up periods, and objectives and outcomes measurements face limitations in the study. Additional future needs to explore complementary intervention or multi-component approaches to optimize hypertension management and patient outcomes

Abstract

The process of uterine involution in postpartum mothers does not always proceed smoothly, potentially leading to subinvolution of the uterus and postpartum hemorrhage. This study aims to determine the influence of puerperal exercises and auricular acupressure on uterine involution in postpartum mothers. The research utilized a quasi-experimental design with a post-test only control group. The study was conducted in Bengkulu City. The sample consisted of 40 postpartum mothers, divided into 20 respondents in the intervention group receiving a combination of puerperal exercises and auricular acupressure, and 20 respondents in the control group receiving only puerperal exercises. Sampling technique was done through purposive sampling. The instruments used were a measuring tape and a questionnaire. Data analysis employed independent T-test. The results indicate a decrease in the height of the uterine fundus in both intervention and control groups, but the decrease in uterine involution was more significant in the intervention group (p=0.000). The study concludes that there is an influence of the combination of puerperal exercises and auricular acupressure on reducing uterine involution in postpartum mothers.

Abstract

Menopausal events are associated with decreased production of reproductive hormones, namely progesterone and estrogen. Both hormones in synthetic form are also present in some types of hormonal contraceptive methods. This study aims to determine the relationship between the history of the type of method and the length of use of contraceptives with the intensity of menopausal complaints. The design used is correlational analytics with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 174 premenopausal women was selected by proportional random sampling. Information on the type and duration of contraceptive use was taken through interviews, and the intensity of premenopausal complaints was measured using the MRS (Menopause Rating Scale) questionnaire. Data analysis using regression methods was performed with STATA Statistics version 12.0, with statistical significance set at P < 0.05. Data analysis showed the associations between contraceptive types and pre-menopausal complaints (p-value 0.025) and between the length of contraceptive use and pre-menopausal complaints (p-value 0.021). The study recommends that contraceptive users consider the type and length of their methods, and healthcare providers should offer detailed counseling on how contraceptive choices might affect pre-menopausal symptoms. Future research should continue exploring the connection between contraceptive use and pre-menopausal complaints for more tailored guidance in the choice of contraceptive methods.

Abstract

Several factors influence nurses' preparedness in handling disaster victims. This study aims to identify the factors associated with nurses' preparedness to manage Central Sulawesi disaster victims. Conducted between April and July 2023, this cross-sectional quantitative study involved 124 nurses from Undata Hospital, Anutapura Hospital, Madani Hospital, Bhayangkara Hospital, and Dr. Sindhu Trisno Hospital, selected through total sampling. Preparedness was measured using the Disaster Preparedness Evaluation Tool (DPET). At the same time, knowledge, attitudes, and experiences in disaster management were assessed with the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices of Disaster Management (KAP DM) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using chi-square and linear regression tests. The chi-square results indicated significant relationships between preparedness and knowledge (p=0.004), attitude (p=0.045), length of service (p=0.037), participation in disaster training (p=0.004), and experience in disaster management (p=0.028). At the same time, education level showed no significant relationship (p = 0.075). Linear regression revealed that knowledge had the strongest influence on preparedness. The study concludes that knowledge, attitudes, length of service, disaster training, and disaster management experience are key factors affecting nurses' preparedness. It is recommended that emergency nurses regularly participate in disaster-related training to enhance their ability to provide timely medical assistance, thereby reducing disaster-related mortality.

Abstract

As the global prevalence of air pollution continues to rise, understanding its intricate impact on human health, particularly respiratory well-being, becomes imperative. The research objectives of the article is to explore and establish clear connections between air pollution and respiratory health. Methods: A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles published between 2015 and 2023 were included, with a focus on epidemiological studies, experimental research, and reviews that explored the impact of air pollution on respiratory problems. The result is this review synthesizes the established connections between these pollutants and a range of respiratory problems. Extensive evidence showcases how exposure to elevated pollutant levels escalates the risk of respiratory maladies, encompassing aggravated asthma, exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms, compromised lung function, heightened susceptibility to respiratory infections, elevated lung cancer risk, and potentiated allergic responses. This review also underscores the heightened vulnerability of certain demographics, such as prenatal age, children, the elderly, individuals with preexisting respiratory conditions, low socioeconomic groups, occupational groups, outdoor workers, and athletes, immune-compromised individuals, and genetic susceptibility to these detrimental effects. The underlying mechanisms orchestrating the impact of air pollution on respiratory health involve intricate interplays of oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue damage within the respiratory system. In conclusion: The study advocates for urgent and targeted strategies to mitigate the adverse impact of air pollution on respiratory health.

Abstract

Preschool-aged children who experience hospitalization in a pediatric ward often face a variety of emotional challenges, including emotional exhaustion. Hospitalization is a frightening and stressful experience for children, especially when they are separated from their family and peers. Visual art and animation film therapy have been recognized as effective therapeutic methods for addressing children's emotional exhaustion and stress. Visual arts play therapy allows children to express their feelings, overcome anxiety, and build emotional connections with their surroundings. The study aimed to look at the effects of visual art play therapy and animated films on managing emotional exhaustion in hospitalized preschool-age children. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires given to parents. The result obtained by the treatment group's mean emotional exhaustion score before the action was 32.20, and after the action was 21.80. Wilcoxon statistical analysis, p-value = 0.001. So, it is concluded that there is a significant decrease in children's emotional exhaustion before and after therapy. The conclusion of this study can help improve the care and well-being of preschool children who experience hospitalization, as well as provide valuable insights for health practitioners and educators in supporting the emotional development of children in challenging medical situations.
