Development as a process of life change should involve communities as intergral elements. People should not only be regarded as objects of development. The paradigm of the bottom up planning expects people to act as both the subject and object of development. In the context of the development of rural tourism, the planning process should involve the local communities from the beginning. Dieng Plateau as a tourist site has a diversity of attractions, and tourist-oriented villages are designed by local communities to complement the tourist attractions in Dieng. This Study focuses on the participation of the communities in western Dieng in developing tourist villages in their area.Various stages of the planning are completed collectively and then put into action together. By applying action research methods, this study has the following results: (1) the identi cation of problems in the development of rural tourism, (2) the mapping of the potential of rural tourism, and (3) the identi cation of potential inter-agency networking to support sustainable rural tourism in western Dieng.

Memmories of colonization have created an ethos of daily struggle among the followers of Saminism. Encounters with colonialism in the early 20 th century impacted Samins’ character, ethos, and worldview, as demonstrated through their way of dealing with the Indonesian government, corporations, and other communities. This impact is evident in the case of the establishment of the Semen Gresik factory in Sukolilo, Pati, Central Java. The project plan of establishing a cement factory and exploration of Kendeng Mountain at Sukolilo created con ict among the people of Pati. The people were divided into two groups. The rst supported the exploration and the second resisted. Samins, however, resisted it and stood against it for their environment. This article examines the Samins actions when dealing with outside powers, in this case the State and the cement corporation. It also studies how the Samins constructed their post-colonial worldview and identity in response to the state, religion, and capitalism. Using Gayatri sivak’s theory of “subalternity”, this article explains identity politics of the post-colonial Samin Movement.

This paper discusses on ags used by Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia Yogyakarta (HTI DIY). This organization uses two types of ag: liwa and rayah. The color of the liwa is white and the color of the rayah is black. Upon both the profession of faith (shahada) is written in Arabic Calligraphy. Historically speaking, the Prophet Muhammad used the liwa and the rayah. Politically speaking, both ags are intended for use as the ag of the nwe caliphate to which HizbI ut-Tahrir (HT) aspires. HTI DIY con rms that liwa and rayah are not their ags but ags of Islam. The semiotic aesthetics study of the ags includes the study of aesthetic object, aesthetic values, and aesthetics experience. As aesthetic objects, the liwa and rayah show varieties. Aesthetic values of those ags consist of a symbolic value, one which refers to Islam and the Caliphate; iconic value, i.e.the imitation of the Prophet Muhammad’s ags; and indexical value indicating the activity of the HTI DIY. Aesthetic experiences of the ags experienced by the HTI DIY activists are in the form of the emotional effects.

This article is an effort to make a clear map on contemporary Muslim intellectuals in the Middle East after the Arab defeat in 1967. The Six-Day War took place in June 1967 was a disaster for the Arab world. It ended the ideology of Pan-Arab nationalism and encouraged the rise of four compating self-criticism ideologies: Marxism, Liberalism, Fundamentalism and Nationalism. The four ideologies have their own particular responses and solutions to the Arab crisis. The result of this research shows that Islamic fundamentalism is still the strongest ideology compared to the secular ideologies. The Arab Spring in 2011 proved the fact and paved a way for the Islmists to become dominant in the political arena, as recently shown in Egypt. The other Islamist militant groups, such as Jama’ah Islamiyyah are now more free to promote the implementation of Islamic syari’ah.
