Abstract

Mass media and social media generally use women as the subject and object of their content. Unfortunately, the exploitation is unbalanced and even impressive, only making women an object to be seen from the feminine side. The aim of this research is to explain the creation of communication in the media, especially social media, from a gender perspective. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library study method. The results shows that gender-sensitive social media communications can be achieved by: 1) strengthening digital literacy for the public, building a networked digital community to strengthen gender empowerment and content through education and social media discussion spaces; 2) educating about women's needs in the fields of politics, social, cultural, and violence using gender-friendly language; 3) presenting gender-neutral social media content or posts by showing individuals as subjects; and 4) engaging men to break the culture of patriarchy through equal communication.

Abstract

This descriptive research explores the patterns of health news in Punch and Tribune online newspapers from 2018 to 2022, emphasizing the reliance on foreign research by both publications in a bid to curb health misinformation online. With a population of 765 and a sample size of 533, the study reveals Punch's consistent rise in yearly research journal-sourced health news, contrasting with Tribune's fluctuating trend. The Punch heavily favors foreign research (98.1%), while Tribune maintains a more balanced approach with 51.4% from Nigerian sources. The findings underscore disparities in editorial strategies, raising concerns about the visibility of local health research. The study recommends increased collaboration with local researchers and enhanced accessibility of local research, for a more comprehensive and contextually relevant portrayal of health topics to curb health misinformation.

Abstract

This paper examines the religious issues represented in secular media. Secularism has been regarded unavoidable since the development of science and technology and in line with positivistic idea. However, since the second half of the 20th century, sociologists of religion have argued that secularism is no longer relevant due to the insurgence of religions and religious institutions around the world. In particular, this paper discusses how Solopos –a newspaper in Surakarta- publishes articles related to the topics of religion. The research finds that even though Solopos is a secular media, it still publishes articles on religious issues. There is no specific policy regarding this publication, but it represents the contexts of the society that still regard religion as an important part of their life. Based on the research, this paper concludes that secularism has failed both in the public space such as media and in the mindset of the people of Surakarta.
