Abstract

The study deals with the types of maxims violation in The Avengers movie’sscript. The objectives of the study were to discover the types of maxims violation,the most dominant maxim violation, and to explain the implication of the mostdominant maxim violation in The Avengers movie. The source of the data was theconversations in The Avengers movie. The data was the script of The Avengersmovie. There were 55 maxim violations in this research. The descriptivequalitative design was used to analyze the data. Descriptive qualitative research isa research method which describes the condition, events or situations. This studywas conducted by using descriptive qualitative method because the intention ofthis study was to describe how the maxims are violated. The results showed thatall types of maxim were violated; 39 utterances (70.90%) maxim violation ofrelation, 8 utterances (14.54%) maxim violation of quality, 5 utterances (9.09 %)maxim violation of quantity, 3 utterances (5.45%) maxim violation of manner.The most dominant type of maxim violation was the maxim violation of relation.The implication of maxim violation of relation as the dominant type of maxims inthe script of The Avengers movie was a strategy from the speakers to hidesomething, to hide the truth, and to create humor by giving irrelevant answer orchanging the topic.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study deals with the types of illocutionary acts in Ellen Degeneres Talk show. The objectives of this study were to describe the types of illocutionary Acts which were used in Ellen Degeneres Talk show, to discover the type of illocutionary act which was dominantly used in Ellen Degeneres Talk show, why it is dominant and to elaborate in what contexts the dominant type occurs. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. It took two episodes of Ellen Degeneres Talk Showwhich is taken randomly from internet. Based on the analysis, not all types of illocutionary acts were used in Ellen Degeneres Talkbecause Declarative is not found.There were 326 utterances in two episodes selected, and the percentages of data were 43.86% ofassertives, 30.67% of directives, 18.40% of expressives, 6.13% of commisives and 0% of declaratives. The writer does not find declarations in the dialogue because there is no utterance that has a function that can change the world or the status of people through speaker’s utterance. The most dominant type of illocutionary acts found was Assertives. It shows that in their conversation the host most gave information and statement because it happened in the context of talk show where Ellen as the host gave some information about her guess star, information about the theme of the show and also about guest’s personal life and career.   Keywords:Pragmatics, Speech Acts, Illocutionary Acts

Abstract

The study is concerned with the way the writer explores The Use of Processes as Reflected in Woman Portrayals in Batak Toba Songs Lyrics. How the use processes linguistically represented and the reason of processes realization as it is. The research method used in this paper is qualitative research and based on Halliday Theory use in the types of process. There were 244 clauses of process from the 15 song of Batak Toba. The findings of this research showed that six types of process. it implied that songs in Batak Toba expressed that Mental Process is the dominant type as 38, 6 % from the 94 clauses is found. It implied that the woman portrayals in Batak Toba song expressed what the feel with the sensing which covering thinking, feeling and emotions which happened inside human being. It related to the relational process that cause of the value of woman in the Batak Toba song lyric with the identification of the position woman portrayals. Keywords: Process, Six Types of Processes, Woman Portrayals

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with The Changing of Characterization of The Main Characters in David Nicholls’ One Day. The objectives of this study are to find out the changing of characterization and the reasons that cause the changing in the novel. This study is limited to analyze Dexter Mayhew as the main character. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from David Nicholls’ novel One Day. The findings indicate that Dexter has round and negative side as his nature; Arrogant, Ambitious, Hedonistic and Selfish. The character finally ended to the positive characterization;  being responsible and mature. The reason causing the changing of characterization of the main character is that facing a major outside challenge, developing a close relationship with someone very diffrent from himself such as Sylvie, Jasmine and Emma, and facing his own inner demons and prejudices. Abstract

This study focused on finding out the cultural values in song lyrics Endeng-endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. The objectives of this study were : (1) to find out the types of cultural values in song lyrics Endeng-endeng, (2) to find out the dominant types that used in song lyrics Endeng-endeng and (3) how the realization of the cultural values in wedding ceremony of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. There were 18 data of cultural values that were taken from song lyrics Endeng-endeng transcriptions. The findings of this research were : (1) There were nine cultural values of Batak that found in song lyrics Endeng-endeng, that contained kinship (16.7%), religion (16.7%), hagabeon (extended family)(11.1%), hasangapon (respect) (11.1%), hamoraon (wealth) (5.5%), hamajuon (modernization) (11.1%),  patik dohot uhum (rules and laws) (11.1%), pangayoman (nurture) (5.5%) marsisarian (conflict) (11.1%). (2) The most dominant types of cultural value was kinship and religion (16.7%). (3) The realization of cultural values of song lyrics Endeng-endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency was described by interview the informants that understood about Endeng-endeng. The meanings in song lyrics Endeng-endeng were the advices for the groom that should be applied by them in their life after got marriage.Keywords: cultural values, Endeng-endeng, song lyrics, wedding ceremony of Mandailing society

Abstract

This article deals with the characterization of the main character in Gone Girl film. The study was aimed to find out the characterizations and the most dominant characteristic of Amy Elliot Dunne in the film. The study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were taken from all utterances of Amy’s dialogues and monologues which were transcribed into 39 selected sentences. The findings of the study were: (1) the kinds of Amy characterizations: intelligent (17.94%), perfectionist (12.82%), insecure (28.20%), liar (33.33%) and vengeful (7.69%); (2) the most dominant characteristic of Amy was liar (33.33%).

Abstract

This study concentrates on the analysis of process types in transitivity system, which is a very important branch of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar. The writer turns to this theory because of its belief that language can be considered as human representation of the world or reality. From the analysis, the writer hopes that the ones who are interested in this study can learn how language represents the world inside the human beings as well as the world around them, so that the analysis can also serve as an effective way in any kinds of text analysis. Abstract

This study deals with the verb formation in Angkol language. This study aims tofind out the kind of affix that formed a verb in Angkola, to describethe pattern ofverb formation in Angkola language and also to find out the grammaticalmeanings occurred through the verb formation in Angkola language. This studywas conducted by using descriptive qualitative method by Moleong (1975:5).Inthis research, the descriptive qualitative method was used to find out the types ofaffixes that formed a verb in Angkola language and to describe the pattern of verbformation in Angkola language. The data of this research were taken from thescript of Parhuta-huta part I movie, and 8 song lyrics of Top SimamoraftDeliana.The technique of data analysis applied was generative morphology proposed byHalle (1973). After analyzing the data it was found that were three kinds of affixesfound in verb-formation of Angkola language, namely: 1). Prefix, such as [di-],[ma-], [mar-], [tar], [pa], [maN-]. 2). Suffix, such as: [-kon], [-i], [-hon]. 3).Confix, such as: [maN-i], [maN-kon] and [mar-an], and morphophonemic changealso occurred through the verb formation of Angkola language, namely: 1).Phonological alteration (assimilation) and 2). Phonological Deletion (Omission).And also found four kinds of grammatical meaning occurred through the verbformation of Angkola language namely: 1. activity, 2. Process, 3. Command, 4.Condition. Therefore the dominant types of affixes occurred in verb formation ofAngkola language is prefix with 6 kinds of prefixes. Abstract

ABSTRACT One aim of this article is to show through concrete examples about how Illocutionary Force used in Novel Darkest Hour By Cleo Virginia Andrews. The research are to describe the six types of illocutionary force in Cleo Virginia Andrews’s Darkest Hour to derive the most dominant type of illocutionary force, to explain the meaning of illocutionary force and to analyze the implication of that dominant the six types of illocutionary force to the novel itself. This study applied descriptive qualitative method.  They were taken randomly and found 108 the types of illocutionary force; Asserting   (21,29 %), Promising  (13,89 %), Excomunicating ( 12,04%), Exclaiming in pain (15,74 %), Inquiring (11,11 %), and Ordering (25,92%) occurs in the novel. It was found that the most dominant type of illocutionary force that is used in Cleo Virginia Andrews’s Darkest Hour is Ordering for expressing what the speaker wants (25,92%).  This implies that the Ordering for expressing what the speaker wants play a great role in the novel. It means that wishes as expression of speaker’s desire or wants in order to expect it becomes    a reality can be characteristic of the novel in case of applying order to express of Illocutionary Force within utterances.
