Abstract

This study aims to examine the integration of multicultural values in maintaining social harmony amid cultural and religious diversity in Sangatta, East Kutai. Sangatta is recognised as a multicultural area inhabited by various ethnic groups and adherents of different religions, making it essential to understand how its community preserves social cohesion in daily life. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings reveal that harmony in Sangatta is fostered through interreligious and intercultural social interactions, community cooperation (gotong royong), early education on tolerance, community deliberation, and open communication. However, several challenges persist, including limited interaction among specific ethnic or religious groups, the lack of informal intercultural activities, and low youth participation in interfaith engagements. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the roles of social institutions such as the Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), increase youth involvement, and organise sustainable intercultural programs. These efforts are vital to reinforcing the foundations of harmony and positioning Sangatta as a model for peaceful multicultural coexistence

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of pesantren as centers of community empowerment in the context of sustainable development or the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This research is conceptual and uses a qualitative approach through a literature review of previous research, government policies, and empirical pesantren practices in Indonesia. The analysis shows that pesantren contribute directly to the achievement of several SDGs, particularly poverty alleviation (SDG 1), quality education (SDG 4), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), and action on climate change (SDG 13). Pesantren serve as centers of education, economics, social affairs, and the environment through initiatives such as eco-pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), santri (Islamic students' cooperatives), and collaboration with government and international institutions. The main challenges faced include limited human resources, funding, and unprofessional governance. This study concludes that strengthening management capacity and partnership strategies are key to maximizing pesantren's contribution to the SDGs agenda.

Abstract

This study examines the role of pendidikan as an agent of social change in RT 33 Singa Gembara, Sangatta Utara, which faces challenges such as kemiskinan struktural, low educational participation, and environmental degradation due to mining activities. The research questions focus on: the role of pendidikan formal, nonformal, and informal as agents of social change; the main challenges faced by education in promoting socio-economic and environmental transformation; and community-based educational strategies to overcome structural poverty and social conflict. The study aims to identify the contributions of various forms of education to community transformation comprehensively. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with data collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving five key informants representing formal, nonformal, and informal education perspectives. The results show a synergy between formal education (elementary and SMP Bina Adab Nusantara), nonformal education (PKK program), and informal education (mosque recitations), which has improved basic literacy, economic independence, and social tolerance, despite obstacles such as family economic priorities, pollution, and limited facilities. Community-based strategies such as digital literacy, mutual cooperation forums, and A/B/C package tutoring were effective in reducing poverty and social conflict. This research confirms education as a driver of sustainable social transformation and recommends collaboration among the government, educational institutions, and communities to strengthen its impact

Abstract

Education is not merely a space for transferring knowledge, but a social arena that shapes values, norms, and collective identity. This study uses a sociological perspective on education to examine the dynamics of Indonesian education through three main theories: functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interactionism. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through a literature review of academic works from 2005–2025. The results of the study indicate that functionalism views education as a tool for social integration that maintains order through the transmission of shared values. Conflict theory highlights the role of education in reproducing inequality through differences in access and opportunity, while still opening up critical space to challenge domination. Meanwhile, symbolic interactionism explains how the meaning of education is formed from everyday interactions, symbols, language, and labeling processes that influence student identity. Overall, education needs to be read multidimensionally: as a system supporting order, an arena for competing interests, and a symbolic space that shapes the character of generations.

Abstract

This study examines the role of education as an agent of social change at Al-Munawwir Junior High School in South Sangatta, focusing on the synergy between the school, teachers, and parents. A qualitative case study method was used through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The results indicate that the integration of values ​​such as discipline and environmental awareness into the hidden curriculum serves as a vehicle for social change. Positive teacher-student interactions serve as role models and strengthen the legitimacy of the values ​​of change. The principal's transformational leadership and teacher commitment are dominant factors in success, while the digital literacy gap between students and parents is a major obstacle. The study confirms that the sustainability of social change at this school depends on the synergy of the school ecosystem and structured community support.
