Abstract

This study analyzes the participation, purposes, and challenges of civil society organizations (CSOs) in local decision-making in Tangub City. Using a mixed-method approach, five representatives were purposively selected from fourteen accredited CSOs based on active involvement and organizational performance. Purposeful sampling enables the selection of information-rich cases and aligns with evidence that data saturation is often achieved with a limited number of interviews. The findings show that CSOs consistently engage in program implementation and consultations, frequently participate in development planning, and occasionally contribute to monitoring and evaluation. Their main objectives are to promote public participation and provide essential community services. However, CSOs face constraints including limited financial capacity, weak legislative support, low institutional awareness, and the absence of a coordinating focal person. Strengthening capacity-building programs, improving documentation practices, and enhancing collaboration with stakeholders are recommended to improve the effectiveness of CSO participation in local governance.

Abstract

This study examines environmental conflict surrounding the Tumpang Pitu gold mine in Banyuwangi through a Political Ecology perspective. The conflict, ongoing since the start of mining operations, reflects not merely technical environmental impacts but unequal power relations among the state, corporations, and local communities. Using a qualitative document-based approach, data were drawn from government policies, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) documents, civil society reports, media coverage, and relevant academic literature. Thematic analysis was applied, employing the Environmental Justice framework to assess distributive injustice, procedural exclusion, and the lack of recognition of affected communities’ rights. Findings show that mining governance prioritized economic growth and investment security, while ecological sustainability and meaningful public participation were marginalized. Licensing and EIA processes were largely formalistic, restricting community involvement and overlooking ecological risks to coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods.

Abstract

This study examines the political positioning of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) and the National Awakening Party (PKB) in Indonesia’s 2024 General Election. Both parties represent contrasting ideological foundations and voter bases, making them important cases for analyzing contemporary party competition. Using a qualitative approach based on a literature review of academic studies, media sources, and electoral data, this research applies political marketing and positioning theory to explore how each party constructs and communicates its identity. The findings show that Gerindra adopts a nationalist-populist positioning centered on strong personal leadership, patriotism, and economic sovereignty, which effectively attracts cross-demographic support, particularly among young voters. In contrast, PKB maintains a cultural-religious positioning rooted in moderate Islamic values and strong ties to Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), resulting in a loyal but segmented electorate. Although PKB demonstrates stable electoral growth, its positioning is less competitive compared to Gerindra’s broader appeal. The study concludes that political positioning plays a crucial role in shaping voter preferences and electoral outcomes in Indonesia’s evolving democratic landscape.

Abstract

This study examines radical religious expressions among Jamaah Anshorud Daulah (JAD) and Jamaah Anssar Syariah (JAS) in Bima City using a qualitative phenomenological approach grounded in George H. Mead's symbolic interactionism. Based on interviews with six members and twelve months of participant observation, the study finds contrasting patterns across key dimensions. JAD demonstrates rigid religious consciousness, subordinated identities, hierarchical interaction, organization-oriented action, and fixed symbolic meanings. In contrast, JAS shows more flexible religious understanding, greater individual agency, participatory social relations, transformative action, and adaptable symbols. These findings indicate that radical religious action is not spontaneous but develops through a gradual social process involving meaning interpretation, identity construction, group interaction, and symbolic deployment.
