BIO PALEMBANICA

Bio Palembanica come from Bio and Palembanica. Bio refer to Biology, and Palembanica. Palembanica come from Latin for Palembang, a location in Southern Sumatra (recently capital city of South Sumatra). Few species are namely with palembanica, such as Intsia palembanica (Fabaceae), Shorea palembanica (Dipterocarpaceae) and Aglaia palembanica (Meliaceae). In this term, Bio Palembanica is Biological Journal managed by Department of Biology of Universitas Indo Global Mandiri where this Department located in Palembang. Bio Palembanica (ISSN 3047-9827, online) is a peer-reviewed journal in which scientific articles and reports are biannually or twice a year published (June and December). All published content is available only in the online version. The papers are in the fields of biology and applied biology. The papers scope in field of biology, including ecology, biosystematics, biogeography, ecology, landscape and biodiversity conservation; and applied biology cover biotechnology, veterinary medicine, pests and plant diseases. Indonesia: Jurnal Bio Palembanica adalah Jurnal ilmiah yang diterbitkan Prodi Biologi Universitas Indo Global Mandiri yang menerbitkan manuskrip penelitian di bidang penelitian biologi, yang bertujuan untuk mempublikasikan dan mereview hasil-hasil penelitian dari ilmu Biologi. Ragam artikel yang diterbitkan mencakup hasil-hasil penelitian di bidang ilmu Biologi dan Biologi terapan. Untuk Ilmu Biologi murni meliputi Ekologi, Biosistematika, Fisiologi, Biologi Perkembangan, Mikrobiologi, Genetika; sedangkan Biologi Terapan meliputi Bioteknologi, kedokteran hewan, hama penyakit tanaman dan ilmu-ilmu yang berasal dari ilmu Biologi.Fokus dan ruang lingkup jurnal adalah untuk menyediakan wadah luaran penelitian yang mempublikasikan penelitian tentang topik-topik biologi yang memiliki signifikansi lokal, nasional dan internasional. Abstract

Indonesia is a global biodiversity hotspot, yet aquatic mammals remain understudied, particularly in coastal and estuarine ecosystems. The Irrawaddy Dolphin Orcaella brevirostris inhabits these environments and is highly exposed to anthropogenic pressures. This study compiles mortality records of O. brevirostris in Sumatra and Java using published papers, media reports and citizen science data. A total of 24 records (2011–2025) were documented, with most concentrated along the eastern coast of Sumatra. Of the 24 documented mortality records of O. brevirostris in Sumatra and Java (2011–2025), unknown causes accounted for the majority of deaths (14 records, 58.3%). Fishing gear entanglement was the second most common cause (7 records, 29.2%), representing the primary identified anthropogenic threat. The remaining mortalities were each attributed to suspected poaching, strong monsoon currents, and extreme weather (1 record each, 4.2%). Reported body lengths ranged from 90 to 225 cm and weights from 80 to 150 kg. Both juvenile and adult individuals were affected, with adult mortality raising concerns for population viability. These findings highlight critical risk zones and the need for improved monitoring and conservation measures.

Abstract

The Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia is a cosmopolitan migratory waterbird and an uncommon non-breeding visitor in Indonesia. Although previously recorded from Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei Darussalam, the species had not been documented from Indonesian Borneo. Here, we report the first confirmed record of H. caspia in Kalimantan, Indonesia. On 2 February 2026, two individuals were observed and photographed on the intertidal mudflats of Kempeng Beach, Central Kalimantan, during the Asian Waterbird Census. Identification was based on their exceptionally large size, massive deep-red bill, and characteristic non-breeding plumage. A review of published literature and citizen-science databases indicates that this record represents a significant southward extension of the species’ documented distribution on Borneo. This finding fills an important geographic gap in the known occurrence of H. caspia within the East Asian–Australasian Flyway and highlights the importance of southern Borneo’s coastal wetlands for migratory waterbirds.

Abstract

The Silvery Pigeon Columba argentina is one of the Greater Sundas enigmatic Columbidae. This Critically Endangered pigeon is recorded in nearly every islands offshore of west Sumatra coastline and mostly found in small flock. Its diet is poorly known, where fruits become the only dietary item ever reported. On 19 February 2026, during our survey in Siberut Island, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, we observed a flock of C. argentina feeding on fruits of Planchonella tree. This observation adds more fruit item into C. argentina dietary list, corroborating its frugivorous feeding status. It also highlights the importance of Siberut Island in supporting a significant population of 15 C. argentina individuals, representing approximately 6% of the global population.

Abstract

The endemic Sulawesi Crested Black Macaque Macaca nigra Desmarest, 1822 is restricted to northeastern Indonesia and is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) due to habitat fragmentation, agricultural expansion, and bushmeat hunting. This review synthesizes recent literature on the species' genetics, ecology, health, and conservation through a structured search of major academic databases. The evidence indicates that M. nigra is an adaptable frugivore capable of adjusting its diet and activity patterns in response to habitat disturbance and climatic variation, although these behavioral shifts may incur ecological and physiological costs. The review also incorporates findings from introduced populations in the North Moluccas and ex situ conservation programs, providing a broader perspective on the species' conservation status. Recent surveys suggest population stabilization in well-protected areas, likely supported by long-term research and community engagement, while introduced populations may serve as valuable genetic reservoirs. Continued conservation will require multidisciplinary research, effective law enforcement, and community-based education to reduce human–wildlife conflict. Key research priorities include the genetic viability of introduced populations, the consequences of dietary plasticity, zoonotic disease dynamics, climate change impacts, and the long-term success of translocation programs.

Abstract

The Simalur Island Flying Fox Pteropus hypomelanus simalurus is a poorly known insular taxon historically recorded from Simeulue Island in the early twentieth century. However, since the original record, no confirmed scientific observations had been reported for more than a century, leading to considerable uncertainty regarding its persistence and conservation status. In April 2026, field surveys across Simeulue Island and several surrounding satellite islands documented two colonies of Pteropus sp. within the archipelago. More than 500 individuals were recorded on 9 April 2026 on Linggam Island, while approximately 100 individuals were observed on 17 April 2026 in Labuhan Bakti, Simeulue Island. The observed flying foxes are provisionally assigned to P. h. simalurus based on external morphology and geographic distribution. Individuals closely matched the original description of the taxon, exhibiting a predominantly black head, dark underparts, black back and rump, and a dull golden to chestnut mantle. Although morphometric and molecular confirmation is still required, the observed individuals correspond closely with the historical description and known range of P. h. simalurus. These records represent the first confirmed scientific observations of this taxon in more than a century and provide the strongest available evidence that P. h. simalurus persists within the Simeulue Archipelago.
