Abstract

In everyday conversation, while producing utterances people also perform actions via those utterances. This phenomenon not only occurs in real-life conversations but also can occur in a dialogue of a short story. The present study was conducted to analyze illocutionary acts in a short story dialogue entitled Mr. Know All written by Somerset Maugham. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data were the utterances produced by the characters in the story. The analysis of the data was based on the theory of illocutionary acts proposed by Searle (1979). The result indicated that the characters performed five types of illocutionary acts in the dialogues; they are assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarations. The most frequent illocutionary acts performed in the dialogues were expressive.

Abstract

The most important thing for the success of a language learning program, including English as a general course, is making sure that the right tools are used. Before the materials are made, the needs of the students should be figured out so that the person making the materials has a full picture of what the students need. The study's goal is to find out what the students want to create tools for English as a general course for students who are not in the English Department. Twenty-four students from various areas at Universitas Tidar took part in the study. The study used a method called quantitative research, and a questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results show that the students want to learn English for their future jobs and to communicate with people around the world. The kids also say they need to improve their grammar and pronunciation, as well as their speaking, reading, and writing skills. The students also say that grammar is the hardest part of language to learn and that listening is the hardest macro skill to master. In terms of the issues, the students say that the materials should cover English for everyday, professional, and academic purposes. Concerning the creation of in-class activities, the things that students are most excited about are practicing pronunciation, learning new words, and watching English-language videos. On the other hand, they would rather make videos and work on a project as homework. They also get more excited when working in groups than when working alone or in pairs.

Abstract

Pedagogic competence is the ability or skill teachers must possess to recognize the characteristics of their students from various aspects of life, such as moral, emotional, and intellectual. This article analyzes teachers' linguistic ego, views on their teaching role, and attitudes toward English as factors that influence English language teaching and relate to teacher education. This article presents the results of a qualitative research study on pedagogic factors influencing English teaching in three public schools. Three linguistics principles were discussed with five EFL teachers during interviews: interlanguage communication, native language effect, and communicative competence. They all had an undergraduate degree in English and had been teaching English for approximately 3 years. It was concluded that teacher's classroom instructional practice should capitalize on these factors so that teachers can evaluate their teaching skills in the classroom effectively and adapt their methods to ensure high-quality instruction.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the English Club of a Junior High School students' integrative motivation. The purpose of this research is to collect data on the students' integrative motivation to learn English in a Junior High School. Qualitative methods including observation, interview, and documentation were employed in this study. Understanding the pupils' integrative motivation for learning English was the main objective. The results show that many students would benefit from speaking with native speakers to improve their English proficiency. Out of the total number of students, six aim to enhance their listening, reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English. One student specifically wants to speak with native speakers. Improving one's oratory abilities is a goal of many students. The pupils' interest in learning about the development of English phonetics, pronunciation, and word order led them to study the language.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to detail the examination of the challenges faced by the EFL instructor at the Junior High School while teaching English as a foreign language online. The participants in this descriptive qualitative study were English teachers at the Junior High School. Using complete sampling, we were able to collect data from four English teachers. Interviews and audio recordings were utilized to gather data for this study. Interview data analysis revealed the English teacher's online pedagogical strategy for delivering lessons amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of learning applications as the medium for this new approach to learning was dominant. Using another app to prepare lessons, all of the English teachers at the Junior High School delivered their lessons over the WhatsApp app. Students utilized the specialized learning app, which included G-Form and Quizizz, to complete assignments and tests. The author learned that the English instructors at the Junior High School were dealing with several issues. The English teachers at the Junior High School face several challenges, including students' lack of interest and motivation, network limitations, a cap on students' use of school computers, and pupils without personal devices. Students without access to computers or cell phones may be the ones who don't respond in this instance. Thus, it all began because the student lacked access to private internet study resources.

Abstract

When it comes to the construction of a communication process, grammar plays a significant part. It is utilized to make a clear declaration about the time at which a verb happens. The purpose of this study is to identify grammatical faults in the translation of abstracts from the Indonesian language to English that were produced by Google Translate. These errors pertain to tense, active, and passive voice abstracts. In this particular research project, the research method that was utilized was the descriptive qualitative method. The twenty abstracts that were retrieved from the repository at the University served as the population for this investigation. Documentation and checklists were the instruments that were utilized in the process of doing the data collection. When analyzing the data, Keshavarz's (1999) hypothesis was utilized. Following an examination of the data, it was discovered that the most common error that Google Translate generated was related to the use of tense. In the meanwhile, errors involving active and passive voices were only sometimes discovered. It is possible to conclude that Google Translate, operating as a tool, is unable to determine the tense of the sentences that are being translated. This is a possibility since tenses are strongly connected to the context in which the moment a verb occurs in a sentence, which is something that can only be broken down and comprehended by humans.
