Abstract

This article presents an exegetical study of the text of Luk. 9:10-17 which recounts the miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand. The research aims to uncover the theological, historical, and literary meanings of this pericope. It employs a textual criticism, historical context analysis, literary analysis, linguistic analysis, and the examination of major theological themes. The findings of this study indicate that the miracle of feeding the five thousand holds profound theological significance, including the affirmation of Jesus’s identity as the Messiah. This narrative also depicts a test of faith for the disciples and contains strong symbolism related to the Eucharist. This article provides a deep insight into one of the most well-known miracles of Jesus in the Christian tradition.

Abstract

Members of modern society receive a lot of news that is not true or even lies, but strangely, society easily accepts the news. This phenomenon occurs in a modern era that experts call post-truth. Initially, this phenomenon was used more for political interests but then spread to various areas of society's life. There are similarities between post-truth and hoax news (fake news) because both are wrapped in shocking headlines and are able to attract public attention, even though they are not balanced with data and facts, maybe even using fake data whose truth is unclear. This paper is a literature study with a descriptive-critical approach to the sceptical attitude of the Apostle Thomas and its implications for society in the post-truth era. The main question of this research is “how does Thomas’s perspective become a dialectical-critical paradigm in dealing with the problem of hoaxes in modern times?” The main objective of this paper is to explain Thomas’ sceptical attitude as a model of critical reasoning dialectics as an inspiration for assessing the problem of hoaxes in the post-truth era.

Abstract

In the community of Buru Island, the muka ptukar tradition is a practice of exchanging women as a substitute for dowry. In this tradition, the groom's sister is exchanged with the bride’s brother. The purpose of this tradition is to ease the groom’s family in paying dowry and as a recognition of self-identity. This study aims to describe and analyse the muka ptukar tradition of the Waeapo plains community in Buru Island, from the perspective of gender and exchange theories. This study uses a qualitative method, with descriptive and analytical research types. This paper uses several data collection techniques, such as literature, interviews, and observations. The location of this research is the Waeapo plains, Waepsalit Village, Metar Hamlet and Lele Village, Buru Island. The results of the study indicate that the muka ptukar tradition is still alive today, especially in Waepsalit Village, Metar Hamlet, and Lele Village. In fact, in this practice, women are often considered as “exchange tools” for the benefit of men that women are forced to become “dowry”. This practice is a form of discrimination against women, illustrating the strength of patriarchal culture, but at the same time showing certain cultural values, such as good name and family dignity.

Abstract

Humans, both male and female, are glorious creatures of God because they are created in God’s own image. God wants them to be one in the family. However, this noble purpose is facing various kinds of probation, one is violence against woman in the household. This article participates in the Catholic Church’s efforts to promote a vision of Christian anthropology for a more comfortable and harmonious modern family life. This paper aims to present the Catholic Church’s perspective on gender education to enrich the knowledge of ecclesiastical officers, including catechists, as well as to build family and community awareness to prevent gender-based violence in the household. Employing a literature research with an exposition approach, this study finds that education has great potential to form a society that is more aware, empathetic, and understands the importance of gender equality in the family life.

Abstract

This article discusses Arendt and Sen’s concept of freedom. The two thinkers discuss this topic in the context of social and political life. The main question that this article addresses is: “What are the similarities and differences between Arend and Sen on freedom?” Using a critical analysis approach, this article argues that although these two thinkers come from different eras their thoughts on freedom have some agreements and specific differences. Their agreement here points to some similarities, supports and connections between their thoughts whereas the different positions here refer to some specific ideas which is mainly due to some specific or peculiar context of their ideas on freedom. The similarity between the two thinkers is that they indirectly agree that freedom is concerned with the capability or all the possible ways to be and to do, and the absence of repressive policies. Nonetheless, Arendt’s reflections on freedom were not in an atmosphere of socio-political emergency marked very seriously poverty, injustice, tyranny, and political pressure. Sen, on the other hand, was precisely in that atmosphere: the problem of welfare, contemporary poverty, injustices, contemporary capitalism.
