Abstract

The use of L1 in language learning has become a debate for years. The opponents of L1 use argue that the use of first language (L1) may deprive the exposure of the target language (L2) that will affect learners L2 acquisition. As the consequence, learners must use L2 all the time for learning. However, the proponents say that there is not any evidence showing the use of exclusive L2 makes learners get higher achievement. Instead, the L1 enables learners to notice L2 features, to clear up misunderstanding, to learn vocabulary and grammar faster and to memorize the language. There have been a lot of studies conducted to see the perception of teachers and students on the use of L1 and the practice of L1 use in the classroom. However, few discuss the teacher and student interaction in the framework of IRF (initiation-response-follow up) exchange and Conversation Analysis. The teachers thought that the use of L2 should be used maximally, while students preferred combining L1 and L2 for learning. In the practice, L1 was still constantly used by teachers and students. Teachers usually used L1 for knowledge building and managing classes, while students used L1 for all aspects of learning.

Abstract

The study of fandom and fan culture has grown in significance in the digital age. Fandoms are communities of individuals with shared interests who participate in activities like reading, viewing, and making fan art. Fandom's socioeconomic effects include its contribution to the production and consumption of cultural content as well as its effects on the travel, entertainment, and retail industries. But there are also societal effects like "gatekeeping" and copyright-related legal problems. It also reveals how crucial it is to comprehend the dynamics of power and identity in fandom communities. This study sheds light on issues with intellectual property and social identity as well as shifts in popular culture and media in the digital age. Keywords: Fandom, fan culture, socioeconomics, crowdfunding, social identity.

Abstract

Interview With The Vampire is the first novel in Anne Rice’s vampire chronicles series, which was published in 1976. Interview with the Vampire has been nominated for various awards since its initial release in 1976, including the Bram Stoker Awards and the British Fantasy Awards. Unfortunately, many people are unaware that Rice’s firsthand experiences inspiring this novel. Previous research had managed to highlight the relationship between the author’s life with her literature works but none of them were related to vampire stories. Even though people might find monsters’ story is implausible, readers and viewers of fantasy, science fiction, and horror have the desire to explore the impossible (Athans, 2014). In addition, Wood (1999) strongly added that the details Rice has made about vampire has entirely changed the general vampire world. Rice’s major changes are: vampires were made more reasonable, believable, sympathetic, modern, and suited to the urban setting. On top of that, Rice has put the vampire closer to the readers as the story was told in first-person narration. Considering all of these, the researchers were intrigued in analyzing further the portrayal of Rice’s biography in her novel. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. While data in this research were taken from the novel Interview with the Vampire. This study found a resemblance of Anne Rice’s adulthood stage of life in Louis’s life. In addition, it is also found out that there are similarities between the characters in the novel with the real family member of Anne Rice and her childhood environment. Finally, the study was carried out by conducting a biographical study. The resemblances of characters with people of her life, Rice persuaded the readers to not only like and empathize with vampires, but also to trust them. Abstract

This research paper examines "Jogja Istimewa" (Jogist) program, a mandatory cultural immersion experience for students at Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. The program, organized by the Language and Culture Training Office (KPBB), aims to introduce students, many of whom are from outside Yogyakarta, to the region’s unique cultural practices and etiquette. The program, initially classroom-based, now involves hands-on activities at Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat and other cultural sites. Students participate in hands-on activities such as dance, music, fashion, and archery, guided by experts from the Kraton. The study uses interviews, observations, and document analysis to assess the program's effectiveness in teaching Yogyakarta's culture and etiquette to students, who mostly come from outside the region. The program’s success is attributed to its interactive approach, the expertise of the resource persons, and the commitment of UAJY and KPBB to preserving and promoting Yogyakarta's cultural heritage. Findings suggest the on-site program is significantly more impactful than the previous classroom model, receiving positive feedback from students and instructors. “Jogist Program” has values in fostering cultural understanding and encouraging students to apply these lessons in their daily lives. The paper offers several recommendations for improving future program iterations.

Abstract

Alternate Universe (AU) is a form of popular fiction that is much loved by today's young generation. In the AU form found on social media, the storyline is built not with narrative but with pictures containing chats between characters and also photos with visual claims of K-Pop idols. The tendency of the younger generation who are also K-Pop fans is currently to prefer reading AU in the form of fanfiction which presents light plots and conflicts with visual claims using more interesting K-Pop group idols. However, in its development, a debate emerged that the AU could not be considered a work of fiction because it did not have narratives that build a storyline from the conflict raised like a literary work such as a novel. This research uses a virtual ethnographic method where researchers conducted interviews with 7 AU writers to find out the process of transferring media from fictional stories from pictures containing conversations to short messages or uploading stories on social media with visual claims using the faces of K-Pop idols into works. fiction in the form of a novel. This data was used to determine the obstacles in creating narratives in novels based on their AU works. Apart from that, direct observations were also carried out by comparing AU works and novels from the author's titles to find out how descriptions were developed in narrative form and sentence formation in paragraphs in the novel. This research aims to explain the process of converting AU's work into a complete novel. From these interviews and comparing the AU form with the novel form, it was found that there was a change in the storyline, especially in the development of conflict because AU works were felt to be lighter and often the conflict was not strong enough to be written in a work of fiction in the form of a novel. Apart from that, there are also several novels that still include pictures containing typical AU short messages in the novel because they feel that these scenes are difficult to turn into narratives. There were many parts that ended up being replaced and changed to create a complete novel. Keywords: Alternate universe, novel, media transformation AU to novel, narration, visual claim.

Abstract

This study examines the application of Grice's maxims in the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1," emphasizing their role in ensuring effective communication. Grice's Cooperative Principle suggests that conversations should follow four maxims: quality, quantity, relevance, and manner, to facilitate clear and meaningful exchanges. However, these maxims are not always followed, leading to misunderstandings and misinterpretations. This study identifies instances where characters either fulfil or violate these maxims and analyses the effects of these violations on the overall communication process. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research collects and examines dialogues from the movie to categorize instances of adherence and violation of Gricean maxims. The findings indicate that violations of maxims often occur for humorous, dramatic, or deceptive purposes, affecting the audience’s perception and interpretation of dialogues. Characters such as Dobby, Ron, and Kreacher frequently violate maxims of quantity, relevance, and quality, either by providing excessive information, deviating from the topic, or delivering untruthful statements. Conversely, characters like Mad-Eye Moody and Lupin exemplify the fulfilment of maxims, ensuring clarity and coherence in conversations. The study contributes to the understanding of pragmatics in cinematic dialogue and highlights how filmmakers use language strategically to shape character interactions. The findings suggest that the violation of conversational maxims in movies is an intentional linguistic tool that enhances storytelling and audience engagement.
